After some debate, I thought we’d had our name. It was down between [name]Linus[/name] and [name]Felix[/name] and we were going to go with [name]Linus[/name]. But he’s not even born and every.single.time I bring it up with someone, I get the inevitable Peanuts or blue blanket joke. Yes, I expected it, but it’s already getting old and we’ve only shared the name with a handful of people. [name]Do[/name] I really want to saddle him with this for the rest of his life?
So, I went back and reviewed my name list… and I’ve been thinking about [name]Arthur[/name]. Yes, it’s also a cartoon character, but not one that is ubiquitous as [name]Linus[/name] and he’s not the only [name]Arthur[/name] out there that the general public knows. We’d probably call him [name]Ari[/name] most of the time.
So, what are your perceptions of [name]Arthur[/name]?
Far more than [name]Linus[/name]. And you’re right, there are a ton of [name]Arthur[/name]'s out there in fame land but there’s pretty much only one [name]Linus[/name].
I think of [name]Arthur[/name] Weasley from [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name]. [name]King[/name] [name]Arthur[/name] from Camelot. [name]Arthur[/name] [name]Miller[/name] the author. All lovely connotations without much joking potential.
And I don’t even know what cartoon you’re talking about, so it’s not that ubiquitous.
Awww. I think [name]Arthur[/name] is cute but werable as an adult, has a great history and will fit in but stand out in the world. I would hesitate though today, as some predict the royal baby being named [name]Arthur[/name] and that would surely send it booming up the popularity lists.
It’s one of my favorite names. I think of [name]Arthur[/name] Weasley mostly. The name strikes me as calm, kindhearted, maybe a little old-fashioned. The cartoon doesn’t come to mind at all.
I adore [name]Arthur[/name], it would have been [name]Daisy[/name]'s middle name were she a boy. [name]Philip[/name] [name]Arthur[/name] was our planned combo. I think its handsome, regal, interesting, underused and classic. I would completely avoid if the [name]Royal[/name]'s use it though, as PP said.
[name]Arthur[/name] is likely a ‘better’ option for the cartoon issue you were referring to before. However, how about just [name]Ari[/name] as the first name?
[name]Love[/name] [name]Arthur[/name] and the nickname [name]Ari[/name]!
I don’t think it’s out if the royals use it - that’s like saying no one can name their baby [name]William[/name] or [name]Catherine[/name] or [name]Elizabeth[/name] or [name]Henry[/name]/[name]Harry[/name]. [name]Do[/name] expect people to associate his name with the royal baby, especially if he’s born anytime soon, and for popularity to increase somewhat. That doesn’t have to be a bad thing, though, and if you love [name]Arthur[/name] you should use it.
I think of the cartoon character (in a wonderfully endearing way!) and [name]King[/name] [name]Arthur[/name] of legend.
I love [name]Arthur[/name]! I think of [name]King[/name] [name]Arthur[/name] from the legends, of course, and the British royal family. [name]One[/name] of [name]Queen[/name] [name]Victoria[/name]'s sons was [name]Prince[/name] [name]Arthur[/name], and Princes [name]William[/name], [name]Charles[/name] and [name]Philip[/name] all have it as a middle name. Personally I wouldn’t rule it out if the royal baby is named [name]Arthur[/name]- I’d love to share a name with a princess and future queen (prince/king if I were a guy)! Then again, not everyone would… [name]Do[/name] you live in an area where you could imagine lots of babies named after the new little royal?
I really do love [name]Arthur[/name]- it doesn’t remind me of the cartoon mainly because I haven’t seen it in a while. I know had I been born a boy, I would’ve gotten a kick out of being named [name]Arthur[/name] and seeing [name]Arthur[/name] books on the shelf at the library, or [name]James[/name] and seeing [name]James[/name] and the Giant [name]Peach[/name]. My thoughts on [name]Arthur[/name] is that it’s one of my favorite names and I love it. that’s about it.
I’m looking at your signature and thought I’d offer my thoughts on a few of the names that stuck out to me…just cuz.
as for [name]Linus[/name]…as a middle name, maybe, but the connotation there is much stronger. Besides…I hear [name]Linus[/name] and I think of sinus…
I love [name]Felix[/name] as well, and I think it goes nicely with your daughter’s name, [name]Sylvia[/name]. Maybe I’m being weird, but I kind of see the connection that one of the unique letters in your daughter’s name is y, and the unique letter in [name]Felix[/name] is x, X-Y-Z. Also, they both have l’s smack dab in the middle, which is cool. I hear the name [name]Felix[/name] and associate it with luck. I don’t know if it’s actually the meaning of the name or if it’s felix ficilius from [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] or what, but that’s what I think.
I’ve always loved [name]Simon[/name], I’m not sure why. [name]Simon[/name] and [name]Sylvia[/name] go nicely together if you’re for alliteration (I’m not…I’d like to initial my kid’s stuff someday, which means I can’t have both [name]Annie[/name] and [name]Arthur[/name]…)
[name]Theodore[/name] is adorable…[name]Theo[/name] for short. Though calling “[name]Theo[/name]! [name]Sylvia[/name]! Time for dinner!” might a little tongue-twisting- or maybe that’s just me and my slight problem with s’s and th’s…
[name]Linus[/name] is so cute; I really love it. Did you consider [name]Leo[/name]/[name]Leon[/name] or [name]Lionel[/name]? [name]Titus[/name]/[name]Tidus[/name]/Tydus and [name]Laszlo[/name] also come to mind.
[name]Felix[/name] is darling; its still a favorite of mine.
[name]Arthur[/name] I love. It gives me the same feel as [name]Theodore[/name]; warm, inviting, kind. I love the nick name [name]Art[/name].
To be honest I always thought [name]Arthur[/name], [name]Leo[/name]/[name]Linus[/name], & [name]Felix[/name] would make great sibling names.
If you really, really love [name]Linus[/name], you should do it. Tell everyone that they should get out their “blanket” jokes out now because you never want to hear it again because he’s your damn baby and not theirs. If they really have a problem with it, tell them they could call him [name]Leo[/name] or something ([name]Linus[/name] always sounded like [name]Lion[/name] to me, and that’s what [name]Leo[/name] means!)
You could also give them other examples of [name]Linus[/name]’ throughout history: In Greek myth, [name]Linus[/name] is both a musician and poet, the inventor of rhythm and melody who taught music to [name]Hercules[/name]. In the [name]Christian[/name] era, [name]Linus[/name] was the name of the second pope, [name]Saint[/name] [name]Peter[/name]'s successor, while in modern times chemist [name]Linus[/name] Pauling was awarded the Nobel Prize twice.
[name]Linus[/name] is charming and really the only people who will likely recognize any Peanuts correlation will be his teachers, not his peers. And if they ever give him guff about his name, a well written letter to the principle is in order.
Thank you!!! If we go with [name]Linus[/name], I have a lot of these on hand to get people to back off. Maybe even when we announce the name, we’ll preface it with the history and then actually give the name to give it a set-up. We’re also a little nerdy, so the [name]Linus[/name] Torvalds is a good connection for us, too. I really don’t think the name will be an issue with his peers, it will be the adults that can’t be helped.
