Talk to me about Delphine

I just discovered there’s a [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] pretty far up in my family tree, and it sort of ignited a little spark of love I’ve had for this name. My husband has french heritage, and dolphins have a significance to us as a couple, so it makes it even more fitting.

I guess my biggest gripe about the name is the lack of suitable nicknames. What are your general thoughts about [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] and what would you go with as a nickname?

[name_f]Delphine[/name_f] is one of my absolute favourite names!!!

I’d use [name_f]Effie[/name_f] or [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] for a nickname myself

I like [name_f]Delphine[/name_f]. [name_u]Del[/name_u], [name_f]Dellie[/name_f], [name_f]Della[/name_f], [name_f]Delphie[/name_f], [name_f]Fifi[/name_f], Dephi could all be nicknames.

I like [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] a lot! I think [name_f]Della[/name_f] and [name_f]Fia[/name_f] could be really cool. I love the sound of [name_f]Della[/name_f], and I feel like it’d fit right in with all the Bellas, Ellas, Stellas, and Nells running around…

If I had a [name_f]Delphine[/name_f], she’d probably become [name_f]Della[/name_f]! [name_u]Del[/name_u] also comes to mind and evokes the similarly [name_m]French[/name_m] [name_f]Adele[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Delphine[/name_f]. There’s this lovely woman I know named [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] (maybe in her mid-late sixties?) from Australia who winters here in [name_f]Florida[/name_f]. I liked the name before I met her, but she is sort of the embodiment of everything I would envisage [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] to be: exotic, sophisticated, unique, stylish, etc.

I absolutely love [name_f]Delphine[/name_f]. It’s so pretty, sort of stately, soft, and it works well at all ages.

I think it has good nicknames. I’d go with [name_f]Delphi[/name_f], but there’s also:

[name_f]Delly[/name_f]
[name_f]Delphi[/name_f]
[name_f]Didi[/name_f]
[name_f]Lili[/name_f] – like lee lee
[name_u]Del[/name_u]

And if you add the A and make it [name_f]Delphina[/name_f] you also get

[name_f]Dina[/name_f] – like dee-na
[name_f]Lena[/name_f] – lee-na
Phina – feen-a
Dela
[name_f]Delia[/name_f]
Phia
[name_f]Lia[/name_f]
[name_f]Dia[/name_f]

So there you go

[name_f]Delphine[/name_f] is lovely. I’d never given the name much thought until I started watching a particular TV show, and after hearing the name on the show I started to appreciate its beauty and stateliness. All possible nicknames have been covered, but I wouldn’t use a nickname for [name_f]Delphine[/name_f].

[name_f]LOVE[/name_f]. My husband says “it sounds like a perfume, not a name.” lol. I don’t care; I would fight for it tooth and nail except for the fact that it doesn’t sound right at all with our surname.

I really appreciate the meaning as well, both the dolphin connection and the beautiful blue flower. If dolphins are significant to you as a couple and it’s a family name, then it seems to check all the boxes for a meaningful name.

It’s funny that you mention a lack of nicknames, though. Nicknames are one of the reasons I love it so much. As stated above, there are many. [name_f]Della[/name_f] is my favorite, and it was quite a popular name in the 19th century US (especially the South) - and in the 1920s, I believe? Kind of gives off a fun, jazz age, flapper-esque feel.

I would definitely have named a girl [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] [name_f]Johanna[/name_f] [surname] and called her [name_f]Della[/name_f], if only it didn’t sound so silly in my case.

[name_f]Love[/name_f] all these comments. Thanks guys.

I’m starting to see some viable nicknames—[name_f]Della[/name_f] had not occurred to me, but I like that. All I was thinking before was [name_f]Dellie[/name_f], which sounds like “deli,” and “Phi/[name_u]Fee[/name_u]” or “Phiney” which reminds me too much of Mr. [name_m]Feeny[/name_m] from Boy Meets World, lol.

I’m also glad to see the overall love for the name and that most people aren’t finding it too… I dunno… frilly, or stuffy, etc.?

I think it has solidly earned a spot on my list.

I love [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] and wouldn’t use a nickname.
