Talk to me about Primrose for a first name

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] Berries,

I am looking for a second choice for a daughter’s name in case I have twin girls. My first choice is [name_f]Elora[/name_f]. When I made a poll of my shortlist for a twin name that would go well with [name_f]Elora[/name_f], I was very surprised to find [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] was a clear favourite, with [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] a close second.

To me, [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] would be the “safer” choice of the two names. It’s unusual still, but much more common than [name_f]Primrose[/name_f]. And it relates to the extremely common “[name_f]Emma[/name_f]” and “[name_f]Emily[/name_f]”.

However, my heart leans heavily towards [name_f]Primrose[/name_f]. It’s a name I’ve loved since childhood. I used to write stories to entertain myself as a child, and one of my heroines was a feisty [name_f]Princess[/name_f] called [name_f]Primrose[/name_f]. In my stories her nickname was “Prim”.

I never thought [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] would be a real consideration for a real life child but it seems it is becoming slightly more mainstream, mainly from a Hunger Games character (not that I know those stories myself but I have seen references to that character when I’ve Googled [name_f]Primrose[/name_f]).

So I find myself seriously considering [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] for a daughter. My main hesitation about this name is, as adorable and pretty as it would be on a baby and a young child, how would it age? Can you imagine a teenage [name_f]Primrose[/name_f], an adult and a grandmother? If you met an adult [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] what would be your impression of her based on her name?

I think nicknames are important, and can change with age. I know many seem to have an objection to the nickname “Prim” but I personally think it’s cute. Prim is short for “prima”, meaning “first”. [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] literally means “first rose”. So I don’t have any negative feeling about “prim and proper” as some seem to have.

I also love “[name_f]Posey[/name_f]” as a nickname and think it would age well. As a child she could be “[name_f]Rosie[/name_f]-[name_f]Posey[/name_f]” which I think is adorable. And she would have the option of the more formal “[name_f]Rose[/name_f]” or “[name_f]Rosie[/name_f]” if she wished as she got older.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any other great nickname ideas for [name_f]Primrose[/name_f]?

Sorry for my long post! I tend to overthink these things! I’m looking forward to feedback!

I think Primrose as a first name is beautiful. I tend to especially like names that aren’t very common and stand out, that make a statement. I think the fact that Rose and Rosie can be used as a name for herself as an option makes Primrose better than being named Rose and Rosie! It’s also very elegant sounding, like old school classic names - another type of name I really like!

I knew a [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] in primary school, and now I honestly see it as a very normal name. I’ve seen comments about [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] being a bit cutesy, but the one I knew wasn’t, and I can definitely see it aging well. I think it’s a good choice in that it’s unusual, but familiar. I also like Imy or [name_f]Mimi[/name_f] as a nn.

[name_f]Primrose[/name_f] is in the top 300 in the UK, so it doesn’t seem that unusual to me!
I think it’s a gorgeous name that would age well, like most [name_f]Rose[/name_f]- names, despite being a bit more frilly. I love nicknames Prim, [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] and [name_f]Posey[/name_f]. There’s also [name_m]Ozzie[/name_m], from the -ose sound. It’s a more masculine nickname that would work well in case she turns out to be a tomboy with such a feminine name.

I’m in the minority on the forum, but I don’t like the ‘vibes’ I get from this name. I can imagine it on all ages, but not necessarily on all personality types. I’m sure that would be fixed by meeting the name-wearer though, and if you love it I think it would work.

You put your finger on one of the reasons I love this name - it does have an “olde worlde” classic, Victorian vibe to it which I really love, without being one of the usual cohort of Elizabeths, [name_f]Janes[/name_f], [name_f]Marys[/name_f], Catherines and Annes

It’s so wonderful to hear from someone who knows a real life [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] and the name left you with a good memory of suiting its bearer! Imy and [name_f]Mimi[/name_f] are really cute nn ideas - maybe with Immie and Mimmie spellings. Would be so sweet to call baby [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] by those!

[name_m]Ozzie[/name_m] is a cool idea if she happens to turn out to be a cool cat when she’s older. Plus she will be an Australian girl, so [name_m]Ozzie[/name_m] would be doubly fitting haha

Thanks for the inventive suggestion!

Thanks for the thoughtful reply…your point is exactly my point of hesitation about this name - is it ageless and/or would it suit any personality? I think creative use of nicknames could solve that problem unless she turns out to be a total rebel - in which case [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] may turn out to be such an oxymoron on her that it might make her more badass lol :D:D:D:D

I do think almost every person grows into their name over time, and those around the name’s bearer adjust to whatever that name is, also over time. There are always those of us who which we had something different - even me - I’ve never entirely loved my first name but have never seriously considered changing it. It was my darling mother’s first gift to me, and at the time, “[name_f]Kylie[/name_f]” was rare. She knew only one other [name_f]Kylie[/name_f] who was just an adorable child, plus the Scottish poet [name_f]Kylie[/name_f] Tennant. Mum thought [name_f]Kylie[/name_f] was delightful, unusual and sweet with the lovely meaning “graceful” in Celtic (She didn’t know it was also “boomerang” in Aboriginal lol). So it stays with me and I love it when I remember how she found it perfect for me.

I adore it and I love the nickname Prim. I actually see it as a cool, punk-y name with a ton of feminine strength. I’ve never met a [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] but I would be stoked if I did!

I love [name_f]Primrose[/name_f]! I think its absolutely beautiful, with a little bit of spunk. I can definitely see it on someone of any age. I also think it could work for any personality type, especially because it has so many nickname options!

I agree with other posters that I’d love to meet someone with the name.

[name_f]Primrose[/name_f] really doesn’t feel all that unusual or out there to me, it feels a touch more familiar than [name_f]Elora[/name_f] honestly. and I think it will age just fine! There are definitely flower names out there that seem to age less successfully, like [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], and it’s certainly not stopping folks from using them!

And seriously [name_f]Elora[/name_f] and [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] is such a fabulous pairing for twins!

Super cute name! [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] is an adorable baby girl name. Also a teenager she could have the nick name Prim which is lovely! Plus an old lady called primrose is so cute! She could go by rose too. I think it’s a beautiful name that has a good amount of nicknames she could have too. You love the name so don’t worry what others think its a beautiful name and I think if you love it then go for it

[name_f]Primrose[/name_f] is absolutely gorgeous!!! I adore the name!!! It’s really quite unique and interesting with loads of nicknames - I strongly suggest if you love it use it!!!

I like the name [name_f]Primrose[/name_f]. 1) I feel like it’s closer in style to [name_f]Elora[/name_f]. [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], despite not being super popular, still strikes me as a very classic and safe name, whereas [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] and [name_f]Elora[/name_f] seem more “aristocratic eccentric.” 2) You’ve loved it since you were a kid! So you’ll probably still love it enough after your babies are born to use it and be happy with your choice. 3) The Hunger Games character makes it more familiar as a name, and honestly the character was pretty great in my opinion. She was kind, caring, and brave, which I think every parent should want for their child to be. 4) I can picture it aging very well. My impression of an adult named [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] would probably tie into being “prim and proper” - I picture an adult named [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] being professional and levelheaded. 5) Nicknames: I like [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] and [name_f]Posey[/name_f], and but I think Prim is my favorite.
