I actually really like [name_u]Julie[/name_u]. I go back and forth on whether I like it better than [name_f]Julia[/name_f] or not. To me, it just sounds like a really friendly and pretty name.
[name_f]Suzanne[/name_f] is my sister’s middle name, and I honored her with [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] in the middle for my daughter. I definitely prefer [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] to any of the other forms, but [name_f]Suzanne[/name_f] is charming.
[name_f]Yvonne[/name_f] reminds me of the glamorous [name_f]Yvonne[/name_f] DeCarlo, which keeps it in the usable realm for me.
The others, I don’t like, but don’t hate, either - with the exception of [name_f]Missy[/name_f] ([name_f]Melissa[/name_f] isn’t awful, but [name_f]Missy[/name_f] makes the feminist in me angry).
mean to sound like I hate these names, but generally I just do not see their appeal. I know many lovely women and friends with these names and all three Julies I have known have been friendly and pretty. I’m rethinking [name_u]Julie[/name_u] now!
I have a soft spot for [name_f]Michelle[/name_f]. And [name_f]Marilyn[/name_f], maybe because it’s my grandmother’s name. And [name_f]Suzie[/name_f] is pretty cute. I know a little [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] who goes by [name_f]Suzie[/name_f].
[name_u]Julie[/name_u] is the name of my mother (she’s actually a year younger than you, OP) so I have a hard time seeing it on a baby. However, with teenagers and young adults being such big fans of [name_f]Marilyn[/name_f] [name_u]Monroe[/name_u], and [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]/[name_f]Carolyn[/name_f] being revived, both seem more usable.
[name_f]Debbie[/name_f]/[name_f]Debra[/name_f] - I find [name_f]Deborah[/name_f] appealing in a strong Biblical way. I only like it spelt like this though, or one of the Hebrew transliterations. [name_f]Debbie[/name_f] as a nickname needs a little while longer to come back I think, as a rockabilly '50s name like [name_f]Betty[/name_f].
[name_f]Suzie[/name_f]/[name_f]Suzanne[/name_f]/[name_f]Susan[/name_f] - I actually really like [name_f]Susie[/name_f]/[name_f]Suzy[/name_f], though I think [name_f]Suzanne[/name_f] feels the most dated and [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] is my favourite and not really your generation. [name_f]Susan[/name_f] is rather classic and has the [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] thing going for it. I don’t mind [name_f]Susan[/name_f] at all actually.
[name_f]Carolyn[/name_f] - I [name_f]ADORE[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], but [name_f]Carolyn[/name_f] is okay.
[name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] - I like [name_f]Jenny[/name_f]/[name_f]Gen[/name_f] but [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] isn’t my favourite road to it.
[name_f]Lori[/name_f] - [name_f]Laurel[/name_f] and [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] freshen this one for me.
[name_f]Cindy[/name_f] - Call me crazy, but I rather like [name_f]Cindy[/name_f], it’s very retro and only a NN for me, but whether short for [name_f]Cynthia[/name_f] or [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] or [name_f]Jacinta[/name_f]/[name_f]Jacinda[/name_f], I rather like it.
[name_f]Yvonne[/name_f] - Not keen, but I like [name_f]Yvette[/name_f] and [name_f]Yvaine[/name_f].
[name_f]Louann[/name_f]/[name_f]LeeAnn[/name_f] - I’m a big fan of [name_u]Lee[/name_u] by itself, as a first or middle.
[name_u]Lynn[/name_u] - Ooh. I find equally retro [name_u]Lee[/name_u] a bit easier, actually. [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] suffers not from being dated per se but from the CURRENT trend of attaching it to the end of other first names. -lynn as a suffix a la [name_f]Adalyn[/name_f], [name_f]Ashlynn[/name_f], [name_f]Katelynn[/name_f], Haylynn etc. wears me the hell out.
I would be likeliest to use either [name_f]Cindy[/name_f] as a NN or one of the [name_f]Susan[/name_f] forms. [name_f]Deborah[/name_f] is admirable but because of family dynamics I’d be likelier to dust off [name_f]Judith[/name_f] which feels of similar vintage to me.
I really like [name_f]Melissa[/name_f], [name_f]Cindy[/name_f] and [name_u]Julie[/name_u]. [name_u]Lisa[/name_u], [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] and [name_f]Marilyn[/name_f] I also like:)
I could see [name_f]Susan[/name_f]/[name_f]Susie[/name_f]/[name_f]Sue[/name_f] on a little girl, but the others are really dated to me. [name_f]Susie[/name_f] and [name_f]Sue[/name_f] are cool in a rockabilly way.
I like the down-to-earth and friendly name of [name_u]Julie[/name_u]. I think of the cool blond actress [name_f]Peggy[/name_f] Lipton who played [name_u]Julie[/name_u] [name_m]Barnes[/name_m] on 60’s-70’s TV show “The Mod Squad”. Her sidekicks were [name_m]Pete[/name_m] and [name_m]Link[/name_m]. My head is often filled with useless information. [name_f]Suzanne[/name_f] is quite pretty especially in a [name_m]French[/name_m] accent (soo-[name_m]ZAHN[/name_m]). I think [name_f]Yvonne[/name_f] is quite nice too. So there’s three from your list that I get a pass!
I had forgotten about [name_f]Peggy[/name_f] Lipton as [name_u]Julie[/name_u]. Or as anything. She is lovely and does bring cool blonde charm to the name [name_u]Julie[/name_u]!
I know a few mega-hip parents who’ve used [name_f]Missy[/name_f], [name_f]Suzie[/name_f], [name_f]Cindy[/name_f], [name_f]Lori[/name_f] and the like. I know a little girl named [name_f]Joni[/name_f] which might be my most favourite thing ever.
[name_f]Jennifer[/name_f], [name_f]Michelle[/name_f], [name_f]Leeann[/name_f], [name_u]Kelly[/name_u] and [name_u]Lisa[/name_u] will be out for a long time, I feel. But apart from that, I can see the rest working.
I absolutely love [name_f]Karen[/name_f] - probably because of [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] [name_m]Marquez[/name_m]'s character in Outnumbered (although really I think that’s a mistake made by out-of-touch writers, listening to the names of [name_f]Karen[/name_f]'s friends, they’re of a similar vein… [name_f]Tanya[/name_f] I seem to remember, unusual for 8 year olds). [name_f]Marin[/name_f], [name_u]Seren[/name_u] etc. seem to be trendy at the minute, I’d love to hear a couple of little Karens.
