Hey, everyone! We’re writing down our options for baby #2! Our first little one is called Amalia and we have been thinking of a few names for her little sister.
The only other name we ever considered for Amalia was Maja, but we both agree that Amalia and Maja are just a bit too close so we’re not using that. So we’re thinking Anja or Tally and would LOVE to hear your opinions.
We love Anya with Y, we don’t really like it with an I and my husband is Swedish, so he’ll go for J over Y and, honestly, so will I. So we’re thinking Anja.
We thought of Taylor, to honor my mum (whose name is Thais), but we’re not into the fact that’s gender neutral (we already go for gender neutral middle names) and so, we thought of Tally. I first thought of Tali, but in the end we both decided we like Tally best. Similar to Scylla too which is a name I always loved but won’t even consider because there’s a tv show on at the moment where there’s a character named Scylla played by an actress named Amalia… That’s just too much for me lol Talia is a no for us, by the way.
I think both are close enough to Amalia in a way that Anja has the same initial and Tally the same “Ali” sound, but we don’t think it’s as close as Maja. Our surname isn’t very common, it’s two-syllables and rhymes with “horn” and I’d love to hear your opinions on this.
Also, if anyone has any other ideas, we’re open to hearing them but mostly would like to know which one you’d choose and, if possible, why.
I think [name_f]Anja[/name_f] is a lovely fit with [name_f]Amalia[/name_f]. [name_u]Tally[/name_u] is very nice, but is quite a different style to [name_f]Amalia[/name_f]. [name_f]Anja[/name_f] [name_u]Tally[/name_u] or [name_f]Anja[/name_f] [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] would be lovely though!
I prefe Anja as a sister to Amalia! I think it has the same feminine-but-not-frilly, European-chic qualities. I agree with the previous poster that Tally feels quite different in style, modern and nickname-y, and still quite unisex in my opinion.
Thank you!! I have a question though, how do you day [name_f]Anja[/name_f]? I see so many different ways to say it. I’ve seen ANN, AHN, ON… I wonder what’s the first thought when people see it.
Thank you! [name_f]May[/name_f] I just ask how you’d pronounce it? [name_m]Just[/name_m] worried about the “An” part of it because I’ve seen it said so many different ways and I’d love to know what other people think as they look at it.
And yeah, when looking [name_u]Tally[/name_u] up I noticed it can be used as a boy’s name too. But that’s just very girly and spunky to me, maybe because of the image I made up for it.
I say ah-nya or ann-ya, it kind of depends? Haha. I’m bad at explaining pronunciations, but since I’m European just assume that I’d pronounce it similarly to your husband!
Thank you!!! I’m very worried having them being too similar, grew up next to a family with a [name_m]Nathan[/name_m], a [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] and a [name_f]Nathalie[/name_f], just a bit too much for me. I worry about them being too close but I don’t think I can get as close as my mother suggesting [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] lol
Thank you!! Yeah, I’m not the best at describing pronunciation either! I worry a bit about it being [name_f]Ann[/name_f]- too often, as I don’t really like the sound of it? I got a few moments with [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] being pronounce as a-MAY-liuh and a-may-LEE-uh instead of a-MAH-liuh but it’s very rare and nothing a quick correction can’t fix but it’s nice to know. Thank you!
[name_u]Love[/name_u] both! I believe the show you mentioned us Motherland [name_m]Fort[/name_m] [name_u]Salem[/name_u], right? There’s a [name_u]Tally[/name_u] in there as well and I now relate the namely her lovely and bubbly personality so I love it!!
I however ADORE [name_f]Anja[/name_f] too so I’m SO conflicted!!!
You mentioned your husband’s Swedish, is there where you live? If not, any chance you’d go there for more than just a visit? If so, maybe [name_f]Anja[/name_f] would be better as it would be more common and easily recognised there. I know a Swedish [name_f]Anja[/name_f]! If not, then I think maybe I’d go with [name_u]Tally[/name_u]! Ugh, so hard to choose!
I think I’m gravitating more towards [name_u]Tally[/name_u] in this scenario, if thinking name-wise because I just have that [name_u]Tally[/name_u] [name_m]Craven[/name_m] image in my head, but I agree with the previous responses and I believe [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] and [name_f]Anja[/name_f] are a wonderful pair.
[name_f]Amalia[/name_f] & [name_f]Anja[/name_f] are a very pretty sibset! I pronounce [name_f]Anja[/name_f] as ahn-ya, which is the same way I pronounce [name_f]Anya[/name_f]. Also, if you use [name_f]Anja[/name_f] you have the very cute nickname option of calling your daughters [name_f]Amy[/name_f] & [name_f]Annie[/name_f]
I prefer [name_f]Anja[/name_f] since [name_u]Tally[/name_u] just makes me think of keeping a tally (a running count) and doesn’t seem name-like. Maybe this expression isn’t used where you live.
I prefer [name_f]Anja[/name_f] and prefer it with sister [name_f]Amalia[/name_f]. It is distinct enough from [name_f]Amalia[/name_f], but ideally I’d choose a name starting with a different letter. I pronounce it ANN-yah, but have heard it ARN-yah and that’s a small and easily adapted pronunciation.
I really like [name_u]Tally[/name_u] too, lively, a bit quirky and upbeat. I just generally love ‘T’ names! And I do like that it has a more distinct sound than [name_f]Anja[/name_f] with [name_f]Amalia[/name_f]. Is [name_f]Thais[/name_f] itself actually an option, with [name_u]Tally[/name_u] as a nickname? [name_u]Or[/name_u] something else that has a more formal feel with [name_u]Tally[/name_u] as a nickname? [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Mathilde[/name_f], Valentine/a, [name_f]Talitha[/name_f], [name_f]Tatiana[/name_f], [name_f]Natalia[/name_f], [name_f]Natalie[/name_f], [name_f]Natasha[/name_f]?
