This came on my radar most recently, what are your thoughts on it?
I like it. I grew up with a [name]Tamar[/name] in my class, her father was Israeli, and it’s also one of my sister’s Hebrew names (we get like two each). So if I heard it on a girl I’d assume she was Jewish, but maybe less so than some other names of kids I knew growing up, like [name]Shoshana[/name] (which is receiving attention because of the show “Girls”) or a boy named [name]Avi[/name].
I love it, always have, one of my favourite Biblical girls names. Husband vetoed it, nearly cried. But with his accent he has barely any -r sound anyway, and he dislikes [name]Tammy[/name] as a possible nickname.
[name]Tamara[/name]/[name]Tamora[/name] is more popular. But I prefer [name]Tamar[/name], it sounds stronger to me and less frilled. And the nature meaning is nice, date-palm.
The [name]Tamar[/name] I knew was never called anything but [name]Tamar[/name], definitely not [name]Tammy[/name]. [name]Tamar[/name] is pronounced much differently than [name]Tamara[/name], it’s Tuh-MARR (the “mar” being like “[name]Mar[/name]” like the sea, or [name]Bill[/name] Mahr).
I know how [name]Tamar[/name] is said, I just meant it never had the mainstream popularity of [name]Tamara[/name]/[name]Tamora[/name] which are comparatively popular. [name]Tamara[/name]'s the Russian form and [name]Tamora[/name] was in [name]Shakespeare[/name].
I like [name]Tamar[/name] better but I’m used to Hebrew names. I have heard Tamars answer to [name]Tammy[/name] though. Maybe just trying to stand out less?
I say [name]Tamara[/name] like [name]Tamar[/name] with an A on the end (tah-mar-ah). [name]Tamara[/name] is pretty, I’ve always liked it.
I think [name]Tamar[/name] is beautiful.
I knew a [name]Tamar[/name] growing up. I’d think someone named [name]Tamar[/name] to be Jewish, too. It’s very pretty.
Really? My husband’s friend dated a [name]Tamara[/name] all through college, and everyone pronounced her name [name]TAM[/name]-uh-ruh, with the [name]TAM[/name] being like the first part of [name]Tammy[/name], and that’s how I always read it when I see the name. Then there’s [name]Tamara[/name] like the famous twins [name]Tia[/name] and [name]Tamara[/name] Mowry, which is like Ta-MA-ruh. Huh, I never thought about it, but what IS the most common pronunciation of [name]Tamara[/name]?
Name is NMS, but she was a pretty special lady in the OT.
Warning though, I used to work with a [name]Tamar[/name] and almost everyone thought her name was [name]Tamara[/name].
I pronounce it this way too!
I don’t know where everyone else is from, but I’m from [name]England[/name] and I’m pretty sure most people here would pronounce it like this too.
I pronounce it [name]Tay[/name]-mar.
Sorry, but for me it just reminds me of the Biblical character who was raped, and I’m not super fond of the sound.
Maybe it’s my accent? I dunno - that’s how I’ve always heard it.
I think [name]Tamar[/name] is beautiful!
Yes, that association isn’t particularly nice… But it is also the name of a Georgian [name]Queen[/name] who would be a better namesake.
I love the name [name]Tamar[/name], but the Biblical character, [name]Tamar[/name], had such a tragic fate that I would not consider using it. (I love [name]Tamara[/name] too. The T and M sounds together are very appealing to me, which is probably one reason why I like the name [name]Timothy[/name].)
There were different Tamars in the Bible, only one had a tragic fate, the other had twin sons by [name]Judah[/name] and became the ancestress of [name]King[/name] [name]David[/name].
I always thought she was a fairly strong character.
Thank you, stripedsocks, for pointing out that there was another [name]Tamar[/name]. I am re-categorizing [name]Tamar[/name] in my ‘book’ as usable.
[name]Glad[/name] to be of help. I know exactly what you mean about feeling weird about a very tragic story… I sort of feel the same about [name]Ophelia[/name], despite it’s pretty sound… but since it doesn’t have a sad meaning or all sad stories (I’ll deal with sad meaning or sad story in my Bible names, but not both, lol) I think it can work.
[name]Tamar[/name] is really nice !

I love [name]Tamar[/name]. [name]One[/name] of my favorites.
