Tamla? Am I missing something?

Ok, so at the moment, I’m completely obsessed with The Musketeers on the BBC, and I found myself looking at the credits at the names of the actors/actresses. I love [name_f]Constance[/name_f] (the name and the character), so I kind of got drawn to the name of the actress who plays her, Tamla [name_u]Kari[/name_u].
Then I looked Tamla up, because I think it sounds great, and was surprised to find next to nothing about it as a name. I just got that Tamla Motown was a name of a record label, which I’ve never heard of it, but tbh I’m oblivious to stuff now, let alone what went on before I was born. I also found a user submitted entry on Behind The Name, that said it was a contracted version of [name_f]Tamela[/name_f], which itself is possibly a merge of [name_f]Pamela[/name_f] and [name_f]Tamara[/name_f]. So basically, I didn’t find much. I honestly thought it was guaranteed to be at least mentioned in an old post but, there’s nothing.

What I want to ask is; does anyone know anything more about the name? Or is it just made up? It really looks like a genuine name (to me), and definitely not made up. Is there some kind of awful association that makes it automatically unusable? I’m really intrigued!

Thank you!
Feeling curious, Myosotis

Tamla Motown was inspired by [name_f]Debbie[/name_f] [name_u]Reynold[/name_u]'s record “[name_f]Tammy[/name_f]”. Since [name_f]Tammy[/name_f] was already copyrighted, the founder of Tamla got creative and came up with something similar.

Hmm. I Googled this to no avail. I thought since her name was so unusual there’d be a ‘trivia’ piece about her somewhere, but apparently not.

I would agree with Behind the Name, haha. I feel your pain though, there is a cemetery behind my house with a grave for a little Florala, with parents [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] and [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] from the 1860’s. I tried looking into the name and found nothing, but I still think it’s cute.

Good luck, I’ll see what I can find when I get back onto my laptop! (HTCs arent the best for long google search result lists)

@lawsonhaley I love looking for names in graveyards! It’s so interesting.

I’ve never heard Tamla, but I think Behind the Name’s information sounds accurate. That’s the best that I would be able to come up with, anyway.

I can’t say I like Tamla, but I love [name_f]Tamsin[/name_f]!

Me too! [name_f]My[/name_f] mum said that on our next vacation (we always hit up a historical site in the US), she’ll take me to an old cemetery and look through the graves with me. It was going to be a cemetery in [name_u]Salem[/name_u], so I could look at [name_u]Salem[/name_u] Witch Trial records and graves (We were planning to go to [name_m]Boston[/name_m]), but not sure that’s happening this year.

On my laptop at [name_m]McDonald[/name_m]'s now (got to love Wifi hotspots  ), this is what I could find:

The only famous Tamla coming up is Tamla [name_u]Kari[/name_u], who you mentioned, she was also in a British teen comedy that I love, The Inbetweeners.

The only name similar to Tamla I could find in the ONS ([name_f]England[/name_f] and [name_m]Wales[/name_m]) stats for 2013 was Tamelia, so it doesn’t appear to have a lot of usage.

One suggestion I do have, is to go to britishbabynames.com, and on the Requests page, leave a message for [name_f]Elea[/name_f] asking about a Name of the Week page/info on Tamla. Considering the amount she found for Clarimond and Ismeria, I’m sure she could find something for you!

Thanks everyone! I’m glad I’m not the only one who hasn’t heard of Tamla, and thanks for the advice lawsonhaley, I may do a request at some point.
