Taran and Tristan

I’d love to know your opinions on [name_u]Taran[/name_u] and [name_u]Tristan[/name_u].

TARAN

  • does it sound too feminine? [name_u]Will[/name_u] people think he’s a girls called [name_f]Taryn[/name_f]?
  • do you pronounce [name_u]Taran[/name_u] and [name_f]Taryn[/name_f] differently?
  • associations?

TRISTAN

  • is it too sad sounding?
  • do you like it?

Does any feel dated?

When I hear [name_u]Taran[/name_u], I hear its Welsh mythological roots and the series by [name_m]Lloyd[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]. And yes, [name_u]Taran[/name_u] is pronounced differently – [name_f]Taryn[/name_f] sounds like [name_f]Tarin[/name_f].

[name_u]Tristan[/name_u] is a popular name here in the deep [name_u]South[/name_u], although it is often spelled in bizarre ways (a current student is Trysten) and often used for girls as opposed to [name_f]Trista[/name_f]. [name_u]Tristan[/name_u] is an Arthurian name and that’s still my first association. I also think of the great [name_m]Cleveland[/name_m] Indians baseball player, [name_u]Tris[/name_u] Speaker. For myself, I prefer [name_m]Tristram[/name_m] to [name_u]Tristan[/name_u].

Taran-- NO this name is so sturdily masculine to me. It’s very fantasaical in a good way and kingly IMO.

[name_u]Taran[/name_u] to me is Tar-ran and [name_f]Taryn[/name_f] to me is Tar-in or Tear-in as in “I tear the fabric.” [name_f]Taryn[/name_f] is definitely feminine as I know someone with this name.

It stirs dark stormy battlefields and images of a good king deliberating on matters in a throne room.

[name_u]Tristan[/name_u]

So, I have a cousin named this but spelled differently so I’m biased but I ADORE this name and don’t think it sounds sad! (She’s a girl, though).

Neither feels dated. They’re wonderful.

[name_u]Taran[/name_u] is one I’ve never heard. It’s interesting - sort of earthy, rocky and mountain vibes.
I’d pronounce [name_u]Taran[/name_u] as Tah-run and [name_f]Taryn[/name_f] as Tah-rin

(tah - like the a sound in cat or bat)
(-run - rhyming with the end of [name_u]Tristan[/name_u] or Evan)
(-rin - like in [name_f]Katheryn[/name_f], or rhyming with tin)

[name_u]Tristan[/name_u] is beautiful, gentle but adventurous, mythical but solid, sweet but cool.

I know it can mean sad but I don’t find it sad. It feels bright and sweet to me, maybe because I knew a lovely, happy [name_u]Tristan[/name_u]?
