Taste in names- has yours changed much since you were a child?

I’m sorry if something like this has been posted before but I’m looking for name inspiration (baby due in just a few more weeks and still nameless)…

What did names did you like as a child/teen?
Has your taste changed since then? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have different names you like now or do you still like the names you did before?

I personally loved [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] as a young child, naming my doll that, but now am more into names like [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f].

As for boys names my taste hasn’t changed much, I still like [name_m]Zachary[/name_m] and [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] but also now [name_m]Isaac[/name_m], [name_m]Ezekiel[/name_m] and [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] too.

I feel my taste hasn’t changed too much in that regard and I’m curious to know if other’s change their preferences easily or if you have a name that’s still top of the list years later.

My taste has gotten far more adventurous, I will say that! I used to be very attracted to simple names like [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] ([name_f]Becca[/name_f]), [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m], etc…now I think a name can be like a fingerprint that tells a very unique story about a person, and should be a little different.

Not really, I just can’t use the old ones due to popularity and had to find other names I loved. [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] or [name_f]Alissa[/name_f] were my favorites, but many of the names I have on our list are similar in sound/style.

My taste turns more adventurous (and more international influence) and a lot more defined. Half of what I thought I like has changed, but I still love plenty of old favourites as well. [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]/[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] I’ve loved for like 16-18 years, for example.

Totally! I loved “cool” and ultra-American boys’ names like [name_m]Chad[/name_m], [name_u]Chase[/name_u], [name_u]Dash[/name_u], [name_m]Jack[/name_m] and [name_m]Mike[/name_m]. I thought [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] and [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m] were really awesome an original names for boys and mispronounced them >.<

Now… Well, just look at me. It’s all whimsical and strange. Guess I still like the letter A a lot for boys?

It’s stayed pretty similar for boys, unusual with a flare of classic ([name_m]Toryn[/name_m] [name_m]Matthew[/name_m], [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] [name_m]Archer[/name_m]/[name_u]Vivian[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_m]Severin[/name_m] [name_m]Oskar[/name_m] [name_u]Grey[/name_u], etc). It DEFINITELY changed for girls. When I was younger, I liked really masculine names or at least masculine sounding ([name_m]Adonis[/name_m], [name_m]Christian[/name_m], [name_m]Rhyan[/name_m], etc). Nowadays, it’s mostly Welsh/Scottish/Irish names that end in -yn.

My naming style was quite closed as a kid. I liked common, girly names, eg [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] and [name_f]Holly[/name_f]. Looking back, I had a definite 90’s influence which I’ve always kept with me. I like about two thirds of the names I liked back then. Sometimes not as much, because some just seemed exausted after sometime, but I still love [name_f]Salome[/name_f], [name_f]Sadie[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and that.

Elementary school was a lot of either out-there names or completely regular names - It either would be [name_u]Allie[/name_u], [name_f]Amanda[/name_f], [name_f]Jenna[/name_f], and [name_f]May[/name_f], or [name_f]Apple[/name_f], [name_u]Winter[/name_u], [name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f], and [name_f]Sakura[/name_f], there would be no in-between.

Middle school was all over the place in theme, but consistently long with nicknames - [name_f]Mirabella[/name_f] ([name_f]Mira[/name_f]), [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] ([name_f]Bea[/name_f]), [name_f]Marceline[/name_f] ([name_f]Marcy[/name_f]), [name_f]Elianna[/name_f] ([name_f]Ellie[/name_f]), [name_f]Astraia[/name_f] ([name_f]Aster[/name_f]), stuff like that

[name_u]Early[/name_u] high school was the start of short spunky unisex names - [name_u]Sage[/name_u], [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u], [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u], [name_u]Gray[/name_u]

Some of these names I still like, some are gp’s. I’ve researched names upon names for stories and such, so my tastes have changed quite a lot. My taste in names since late high school have been fairly consistent though, and even names that are no longer on my “absolutely love” list are probably still on my “like” list.

My taste as a child/teen was pretty childish and had lacked depth and meaning in the name. I loved pretty words and always wanted to make it into a name. However, and thankfully, between age 20-30 is where my taste really stuck because the names were classic, timeless, and had history to them.

I first started properly making name lists when I was in high school; I’d just begun browsing name sites for fun, and tended to go for names that were classic and safe, yet didn’t necessarily have a strictly old fashioned feel to them. [name_u]Tristan[/name_u] and [name_f]Laura[/name_f], my “forever favourites” I’ve had since then, would fit that category, I think.

Nowadays I’m a bit more adventurous. I love learning about new, unusual names, possibly finding some I might like to use. I still try to limit the made-up names though and stay within the bounds of legitimacy.
