What do you think… I just came across it and I REALLY like it!
I’ve never heard it before, and am happy to learn that it’s the Scottish form of [name]Thomas[/name]. I think it’s really interesting, as well as handsome.
(My first reaction was honestly “Huh?” but I’ve been looking at it and saying it for a minute or so, and it’s growing on me.)
Take care!
I’m still stuck on the “Huh?” part…
I don’t know if you need further opinion- it’s been a while, but we came across the name [name]Tavish[/name] months ago & have found nothing we like more. I do know it’s unusual, but it’s in the “[name]Baby[/name] Name [name]Wizard[/name]” book as an “Exotic Traditional”- a name exotic for [name]America[/name], but traditional in [name]Scotland[/name], and would do well in the US if only people would use it. I also contacted a guy named [name]Tavish[/name] (I found him online) and asked him his opinion of his name & overall he really likes it. I’ve looked & looked for a name I like more, but I cringe when I think of giving my son a name like “[name]David[/name]” or “[name]Steve[/name]”. Our son’s name will be [name]Tavish[/name] [name]Gabriel[/name]. I like it! (My sister’s name is [name]Samara[/name], and we all got use to that, so I think he’ll grow into the name & everyone else will get use to “[name]Tavish[/name]” too.) If he has a brother in the future, we’ll likely go with [name]Malachy[/name] or [name]Tristan[/name], and if he has a sister, her name will be [name]Sullivan[/name].
I have 3 friends who are all sisters- their kid’s names are as follows;
[name]Vienna[/name], [name]Sage[/name], [name]Brewer[/name], [name]Bryn[/name], [name]Weston[/name], [name]Marina[/name] and [name]Grayson[/name]. Then my other friends had two kids- [name]Ayden[/name] & [name]Coco[/name]. Unusual is the norm now!
I like [name]Tavish[/name] a lot. Wonderful sound. I think the v in the middle is exotic and lovely. I would have it on my list too except that it means “twin” and I am insistent on special meanings. If that element doesn’t both you, I’d jump all over it!
The subject of your post caught my eye and gave me the immediate associations of ‘Scots name’ and ‘[name]Mac[/name]’. I know I’ve heard/read the name [name]Tavish[/name] somewhere. Therefore I was surprised when I looked in my Scottish name book (“Scottish Forenames”) that the name isn’t there.
But [name]Tavish[/name] is included in Behindthename.com, as you may have seen:
[name]TAVISH[/name]
Gender: Masculine
Usage: Scottish
Anglicized form of Th”mhais, vocative case of T”MHAS. Alternatively it could be taken from the Scottish surname MacTavish, Anglicized form of [name]Mac[/name] T”mhais, meaning “son of [name]Thomas[/name]”.
A search of all names given to boys in [name]Scotland[/name] in 2009 didn’t come up with a single [name]Tavish[/name], Tamhas, Tamhais.
Still the name has a nice sound to it and a classic connection with [name]Thomas[/name]. If I were considering it, I’d probably do more research on when the name was most used and how it’s considered by Gaelic speakers. A quick look just now on Yahoo international, UK, produced “[name]Tavish[/name] [name]Scott[/name] should be a shoo-in as Scottish [name]Lib[/name]-Dem leader”. That seems a good reference that the name is still in use.
If [name]Tavish[/name] (now reminding me of [name]Hamish[/name], the Scottish form of [name]James[/name]), goes well with your surname, I think it could be an interesting choice.
I really like the name [name]Tavish[/name].[name]Carly[/name] [name]Rae[/name] Jepsen’s guitarist’s name is [name]Tavish[/name]
I love [name]Tavish[/name]! It’s probably the longest-standing surname-as-first-name name on my list of all time. If I had to go for something out-of-the-box-trendy, I’d use [name]Tavish[/name] in a heartbeat. I put it on my list probably 10 years ago. I think it’s awesome!
I can see the appeal, but to me [name]Tavish[/name] only makes me think of a street urchin right out of a [name]Charles[/name] Dickens novel. Kind of scrappy and scroungy, but a whole lot of “Cockney”.
