Hi everyone. My little girl has already arrived, very early and now I’m not sure about the name we chose which is Taylor Miranda. She’s turning into such a pretty little girl with blue eyes, long lashes and dark brown hair. Suddenly Taylor seems a little too unisex and not special enough. I’ve been agonising over a name change (she’s still only a few months old). My husband is on board and just wants me to be happy as we were undecided and rushed when she arrived so prematurely. Anyway the name we are considering moving to is Imogen Taylor. Our surname starts with M and is two syllables. Her brother is Hunter James. Which one do people like?
I liked that Taylor was rarer (not in the top 100) but turns out it was so huge in the 90s there’s lots of grown up Taylors getting around now. I’ve always liked Imogen too, modern and pretty sounding but about no.38 in Oz now. Any constructive thoughts welcome please! The sooner I can make the “right” decision, the sooner we can move on with our life.
I prefer [name_f]Imogen[/name_f]. If you think it fits better, I’d say change it. [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] is very pretty too, but seems a bit dated to me. [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] is beautiful, and I think it fits fine with [name_u]Hunter[/name_u].
I would normally say [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], but lately it seems so overused and while [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] was popular back in the 90’s, I actually really love it for a baby girl today. It seems like more of a standout to me than [name_f]Imogen[/name_f]. I would love to meet a cute little baby [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] and I think that as she develops more of a personality you’ll realize that it’s actually her that defines how special the name is, and not the other way around.
I had a friend that named her son a very trendy name and then started having second thoughts because it didn’t seem to suit his personality, but as he got older she grew to love it because he made the name something worth having.
My favourite of the two is [name_f]Imogen[/name_f]. I love it! [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] seems like a great way to get a girlier name while still keeping the name she’s been known as until now. Good luck. x
[name_f]Hope[/name_f] I don’t sound like a downer, but I have never understood the fascination with [name_f]Imogen[/name_f]. And,
I do think [name_u]Hunter[/name_u] and [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] go better together as a sibset.
That being said, in the privacy of your home, (without confusing family and friends) try calling your newborn [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] for a several days or a week. See if it really feels like HER name. Maybe even go to a mall or park and see how it feels to introduce her to strangers by this different name. Does it just seem meant to be? Go for it. Otherwise, relax into the knowledge that she will “become” her name one way or the other.
I know that [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] is the unisex name here, but it seems girlier/prettier than [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] to me for some reason. I also don’t understand [name_f]Imogen[/name_f]. But that’s just my taste, I have a completely different style.
I obviously am saying that I would choose [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] over [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] in a heartbeat, but I think that it’s something you need to think about and experiment with as a pp said.
Where do you live? Maybe this is true in the UK, where [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] is #34, but in the US it’s never once even cracked the top 1000! [name_u]Taylor[/name_u], by contrast, is still #76 for girls. It feels very worn out to me, whereas I’ve never met an [name_f]Imogen[/name_f]. [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] [name_f]Miranda[/name_f] would be a magical, Shakespearean name (both names were invented by him for his heroines, [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] in [name_m]Cymbeline[/name_m] and [name_f]Miranda[/name_f] in The [name_f]Tempest[/name_f])! [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] is great as well.
I love [name_f]Imogen[/name_f]!
I have know and taught so many [name_u]Taylor[/name_u]'s in the past 15 years, that to me it is a lack luster name. But that is just my opinion.
I just wanted to share a different perspective… I really disagree with the above. When you choose one trade name I would specifically avoid another trade name. I don’t like matchy matchy siblings. Not to say [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] was a bad choice. It works and is nice. I just wouldn’t follow this as a rule.
I’ve noticed a lot of people talk about clashing sibling names on this site but I much prefer an eclectic approach. I wouldn’t give one daughter a frilly feminine name and another a stodgy masculine name, but beyond that I really like variety with siblings. Makes for a less matchy vibe and a refreshing, creative mix.
Actually, I failed to realize that [name_f]Miranda[/name_f] [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] would be a really nice option, as well. Whenever [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] is in the middle name spot, it reminds of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_u]Taylor[/name_u], and it just seems very classy.
[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone. Thanks so much for your thoughtful replies. Very helpful in helping me get on the right track! It’s obvious neither [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] or [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] are that mind blowing. I’m considering some earlier options again now. Hmmm.
[name_m]Hi[/name_m]. It was [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], [name_f]Delta[/name_f] and [name_u]Sloane[/name_u]. I had to rule out [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] as it’s extremely popular.
I love [name_u]Taylor[/name_u], but I also really like a pp suggestion of [name_u]Bailey[/name_u].
I’m not a fan of [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] personally, I don’t like the long ‘o’ sound…
