Sadly, I am also a teacher so many names are linked to negative associations.
[name]Oliver[/name] passes that test and DH likes it too.
But I also know what children can be like.
Given the popularity of [name]Olivia[/name]… do you think the name might get twisted to [name]Olivia[/name] as a tease?
What about all the 'please sir… " [name]Oliver[/name] Twist type comments?
Anyone with a son [name]Oliver[/name]?
Thoughts appreciated.
I do have other names I like so don’t hold back on the tease factor.
The “Please sir…” thing could pop up. It could also be twisted into “[name]Oliver[/name] Twit”. I doubt anyone would turn it into “[name]Olivia[/name]”, but if they did then the piggy show could get drawn into it.
But really, no name is tease-proof. My name ([name]Belinda[/name]) seemed tease-proof, until fourth grade when a book was released about a cow with my name, and it was read aloud to every class at school, and sudddenly I was [name]Belinda[/name] The Cow for a few years.
[name]Oliver[/name] is one of the most popular names where I am so I can’t see an issue. No obvious tease factors came to mind though if there is an [name]Olivia[/name] in the same class then they may get ‘paired up’ by the other kids. I think if they were actually reading [name]Oliver[/name] Twist then it might be mentioned but I don’t think kids would randomly come up with a quote from a Dickens novel.
[name]Oliver[/name] and [name]Olivia[/name] are the two most popular baby names in the UK, so that issue never pops up here! But otherwise, I don’t think he would get too much grief for the [name]Oliver[/name] Twist thing.
I very much like [name]Oliver[/name], as an [name]Olivia[/name] myself!
Yeah I agree with ‘OliviaSarah’ the names [name]Oliver[/name] and [name]Olivia[/name] are so popular, and I know a fair few and they’re never teased about their names.
No name is tease proof and if they want to tease a child and can’t over their name then they will choose something else, even their surname or their looks, etc. You really shouldn’t worry about it if you like a name.
[name]True[/name]. No name is tease proof. I have always like [name]Oliver[/name] as a name, and luckily I haven’t had any mini terrorists in my classes called [name]Oliver[/name] only gorgeous sweethearts.
[name]Oliver[/name] is a top 5 name here, the US will catch up most likely. I wouldnt worry about the teasing, it is classy and gorgeous (little biased as my 6 yr old cousin has the name!)
Also chiming in from Australia - [name]Oliver[/name] (and [name]Olivia[/name]) are very popular here. There are 2 Olivers (1 goes by [name]Ollie[/name] and the other by [name]Oliver[/name]) in my grade 1 class this year. No teasing troubles whatsoever. Kids are very tolerant of names - there are lots that I would think invite some teasing and yet the kids just accept the names and move on - the whole teasing due to your name thing is not really an issue anymore (at least where i am teaching).
[name]Just[/name] don’t tell me they are little terrors.
As a teacher myself I don’t think I will ever pick a “J” name.
You’re right, with all the multi cultural names and offbeat choices the children I teach don’t tease any names really. Sometimes they mispronouce them accidently.
But I teach preschool, so figured they hadn’t quite got to the teasing name rhyme age yet.
I am feeling a whole lot more reassured- thanks everyone.
I know a fair few dogs with the name [name]Oliver[/name], but I work at a dog kennel do that may be why. I also know dogs named [name]Thomas[/name] and [name]Simon[/name] so it may not matter anyways hahah.
