Teasing potential or no big deal?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone,
I’m pregnant with my 4th, Team [name_u]Green[/name_u], and terrible at naming! A big problem is our last name, Katz. My current fav boy name is [name_u]Gray[/name_u] or [name_u]Grey[/name_u], but is [name_u]Grey[/name_u] Katz just too much?

My other kids are [name_m]Eli[/name_m], [name_f]Cadence[/name_f] and [name_f]Noelle[/name_f]. This is the only boy name so far that just gives me the shivers like the name [name_m]Eli[/name_m] does.

Please let me know your honest opinion and I’m also open to suggestions!

Thank you!

I think there is some teasing potential, but I don’t think it’s so bad that you should scrap the name.

You could always go wth [name_m]Greyson[/name_m]? But honestly I don’t think it’s a big deal.

Name teasing seems to be pretty rare in my experience (basically only when the name sounds similar to something offensive or actively negative), but it does sound like something that would get joked about. Unfortunately it’s hard to tell if your child will be the type to find it funny too and laugh along, or be embarrassed.

I would go with [name_m]Grayson[/name_m]/[name_m]Greyson[/name_m] and you can still call him [name_u]Gray[/name_u]/[name_u]Grey[/name_u] as a nickname at home. Nicknames aren’t usually said with the last name unless they exclusively go by the nickname, so it’d be less of a problem I think.

Hmm…normally I would say it’s fine, but a name that sounds like “grey cats” is a bit on-the-nose. It’s not terrible though, and I’ve definitely heard worse!

I agree with the above poster about going with [name_m]Grayson[/name_m]/[name_m]Greyson[/name_m] and calling him [name_u]Grey[/name_u]/[name_u]Gray[/name_u]. (Or what about [name_m]Clay[/name_m]?)

I think there is a little. Maybe [name_m]Greyson[/name_m]/[name_m]Grayson[/name_m] or [name_m]Greydon[/name_m]/[name_m]Graydon[/name_m]?

I don’t necessarily think teasing will be a huge problem, as it is much decreased in this new generation, at least as far as naming is concerned. However, all I really see/hear is “grey cats”, which is probably the real concern. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if people didn’t point it out, I don’t think it would ever really go away. Honestly, if you really love [name_u]Grey[/name_u], I would use it as the first of two middle names, so that it wasn’t right next to your surname and thus avoiding the grey cats problem. [name_m]Greyson[/name_m] makes a better choice for a first name, but I personally would not use [name_u]Grey[/name_u]. It’s just too much.

I like the suggestion of [name_m]Clay[/name_m], but really it just changes it to “clay cats”. So what about [name_m]Clayton[/name_m], nn [name_m]Clay[/name_m]? [name_m]Trey[/name_m] is also a cute name, and goes better with your surname.
Other suggestions:
[name_m]Troy[/name_m]
[name_m]Drake[/name_m]
[name_m]Jacob[/name_m] nn [name_m]Jake[/name_m]
[name_m]Desmond[/name_m], nn [name_m]Des[/name_m] or [name_u]Desi[/name_u]
[name_m]Dashiell[/name_m] nn [name_u]Dash[/name_u]
[name_m]Dex[/name_m]
[name_u]Kade[/name_u] or [name_u]Cade[/name_u]
[name_u]Emmett[/name_u]
[name_u]Everett[/name_u]
[name_m]Ross[/name_m]

Here’s some examples of how [name_u]Grey[/name_u] may look as a middle with some of these:

[name_m]Clayton[/name_m] [name_u]Grey[/name_u] [name_u]Everett[/name_u] Katz
[name_m]Jacob[/name_m] [name_u]Grey[/name_u] [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] Katz

And honestly, I also think [name_u]Grey[/name_u] could work as the only middle. For instance, I think [name_m]Clayton[/name_m] [name_u]Grey[/name_u] Katz and [name_m]Jacob[/name_m] [name_u]Grey[/name_u] Katz sound alright. The “[name_u]Grey[/name_u] cats” thing is still there if you listen for it, but not nearly as prominent as in the first name spot.

Anyway, I hope some of these helped! Best of luck!!

No way! It’s ridiculous.

On a par with [name_m]Miles[/name_m] [name_m]Long[/name_m], [name_f]Eileen[/name_f] Down etc

I don’t see what’s so horrible about “grey cats”, to be honest. You can avoid it by using [name_m]Grayson[/name_m]/[name_m]Greyson[/name_m] though.

I don’t thinks horrible but I would avoid. I do like the option of using [name_m]Grayson[/name_m]. Another option might be [name_m]Grady[/name_m].

I would keep looking as you may come up with one that works better. I would suggest [name_m]Trey[/name_m] although TBH, I find the short one syllable name sounds choppy with your last name.

I almost never say this, but…yeah, the teasing potential is way, way too much.

[name_u]Gray[/name_u] Katz sounds like a bad joke. I would skip it.

Thank you, all! I appreciate your honesty and after reading your replies, see that yeah, it could be too much. Like [name_m]Greyson[/name_m] but would probably end up going by [name_u]Grey[/name_u], thus same problem. Like the suggestion of [name_u]Everett[/name_u], too, so will run by DH. Back to the drawing board!

I wouldn’t do it.

It’s not that I would worry about teasing so much - there’s really not much to tease - but when I read the name I inadvertently laughed a little. I wouldn’t want to have a name that made people giggle when I introduced myself.

Ooh, hard last name! You’ve done a good job with your other three though, and I’m sure you’ll find something! I’d avoid any adjective-sounding name, for sure. Some random suggestions:
