Hiya! I don’t think I’ve seen this thread before, so I figured I’d make one. (I’m also desperately in need of inspiration to make another character) Reply with a little bit about your favorite OCs!
I haven’t participated much in this part of the forum, but I am currently trying to finish the first draft of my first novel, as yet Untitled, but I’m about 310 pages in.
I call the genre of the book “futuristic urban fantasy romance”, and it’s set about 500 years in a semi-utopian future, when almost everyone lives in multi-level cities.
What was really fun for me in conceptualizing these characters was to think about what types of jobs they might have, and how their world is different than ours.
Main Characters:
[name_f]Serena[/name_f] Yiovan (1st person narrator): 35 yo data tech who starts the novel with a pretty lackluster current situation. She has a somewhat unique upbringing, having been raised in a farming town outside of the city, but has a fairly monotonous job that she’s fallen into a rut with. In the past, she was a fairly skilled cellist, but even that passion has dwindled as the story begins. She thinks of herself as rather socially awkward, not helped by the fact that she is frequently the tallest woman in any given room.
[name_m]Shon[/name_m] Fernandez [name_u]Parker[/name_u]: [name_f]Serena[/name_f] first meets [name_m]Shon[/name_m], 33, at a lightrail platform, where he surprises her by breaking through her standoffish appearance. We learn that he has quite a troubled and complicated past, but he often pushes through his pain with humor and joviality. He works as an infrastructure mech and is passionate about improving life for the city inhabitants through his work, although he sometimes dreams of living and farming outside of the city. He is very close to his immediate family who he lives near and visits often, playing the role of fun uncle to his niece and nephew.
Vashtarin: one of “The Others” who we never quite learn the true nature of (elementals? Demi-gods?). Vashtarin lives in a parallel dimension from which he can influence our world. He’s been cursed, betrayed by a former lover, and is now torn about the means to breaking the curse. Vashtarin likes to write and record human history, and we discover that the burden of his power lies in maintaining the “natural order”. Some rogue Others(his ex, in particular), have their human descendants at war with each other and are trying to subvert the trend towards a more peaceful world, and Vashtarin wants to find a way to stop them. Generally very stoic, but [name_f]Serena[/name_f] often manages to push his buttons.
