Tell me how your style has changed!

I’m just curious how you would describe in a few words how your primary naming style has changed? I know some of us have more than one naming style at a time, or different styles for each gender, and that’s fine! be as general or detailed as you like.

I would describe my transitions over the last ten years as…

girls:
Modern/Southern (Everly, Winona) →
Short and Sweet (Maisie, Belle) →
Romantic and Long (Rosalina, Evangeline)

boys:
Traditional/Trendy/Southern (Dallas, Sawyer ) →
Gentle/Not Popular but Not Unique (Callum, Henrik, Felix) →
Short/Unique (Zoro, Odin) →
Romantic and Charming (Alejandro, Romeo)

safe to say I am in my cultural and romance era, (as my children have/will have Spanish names). Curious to see your naming journeys as well!

I think I went from trendy/most popular names (Emma & Liam) to dark academia/romantic/whimsy names (Blair, [name_f]Delphine[/name_f], [name_f]Fable[/name_f], [name_m]Alistair[/name_m], Peregrine)

[name_f]Love[/name_f] all those names! esp. [name_f]Fable[/name_f] & [name_m]Alistair[/name_m] :heartpulse: [name_f]Emma[/name_f] and [name_m]Liam[/name_m] are such nice names but can see why you’ve maybe moved away from them as they are so so popular

I’d sat mine went like:

Fanciful names (Clementine, [name_f]Phillipa[/name_f], Tallulah)
Nickname-y options (Tilly, [name_f]Jess[/name_f], [name_f]Mandy[/name_f], [name_f]Millie[/name_f], [name_f]Cat[/name_f], [name_f]Dee[/name_f], [name_f]Bell[/name_f], [name_m]Shell[/name_m], Tee, [name_f]Indie[/name_f], [name_f]Lori[/name_f], [name_m]Alfie[/name_m], Annie-Rose, [name_f]Muffy[/name_f], [name_f]Misty[/name_f], [name_f]Trudy[/name_f], [name_f]Dolly[/name_f], [name_m]Jazz[/name_m], [name_f]Minnie[/name_f], [name_f]Nixie[/name_f], [name_m]Mitch[/name_m], Daisy)
A random blend of slightly-off-beat classics / popular names / international options / with a hint of mystical (Jasper, [name_m]Felix[/name_m], [name_m]Logan[/name_m], [name_m]Adrian[/name_m], [name_m]Robin[/name_m], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_f]Nadia[/name_f], [name_m]Emerson[/name_m], [name_f]Larissa[/name_f], [name_f]Ara[/name_f], [name_m]Emlyn[/name_m], [name_f]Deryn[/name_f], [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], [name_f]Chloe[/name_f], Lorilyn)
Now - just an eclectic mix of all the above but leaning to more unusual

Hm! I think a lot of my all time favourites have stayed the same, classic and simple (Rose, [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_m]James[/name_m], etc). I used to like more cutesy vintage names like [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] and [name_f]Nancy[/name_f], whereas I’m now drawn to some modern picks including [name_f]Emery[/name_f] and [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f].

Me too!!

I used to be very into classic ‘Berry’ names like Clementine, Ruthie, August, - and while I still enjoy them (hence most names on my UC!), I’ve suddenly started enjoying fantastic romance-language names like Azucena, Paloma, Rio, Inigo, Alma, Alba. I’m almost confident that when the time comes, I will give my kids a Spanish name!

I’ve also grown an appreciation for names around the world as my love of geography has increased. Names from cultures around the world are on my list! Mirabai, Indira, Moshika, Latika, Naveen (Hindi/Sanskrit), Malaika, Subira, Lailati, Farai (Swahili), Méabh, Oisín, Saoirse (Irish) to name a few of my faves.

I’m also a bit more adventourous with names I would use for my kids. A year ago Miley would’ve been shocked I’d actually use Oceana!

I’m loving some more unusual ones lately too, it’s fun territory to explore for someone like me who normally gravitates toward not popular but easily recognizable and intuitively pronounced names. I love [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f], [name_f]Dolly[/name_f], [name_f]Minnie[/name_f], [name_f]Nixie[/name_f], [name_f]Larissa[/name_f], [name_m]Adrian[/name_m] & [name_m]Robin[/name_m] :heartpulse:

[name_m]Ah[/name_m], I miss being in my cutesy vintage phase! [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] was always one of my favorites. :yellow_heart: also love [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_m]James[/name_m] & [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] (and why do I actually love those three as a sibset despite their different styles)

Sweet and common (Emma, Lily, Hannah, Ethan, Isaac, Hudson) →
Outdoorsy and storybook-eque (Rose, Freya, Sage, Wesley, August, Forest) →
Old fashioned and charming (Ada, Louisa, Fern, Edwin, Otis, Gilbert) →
Cute and cottagecore (June, Marie, Ruth, Rudy, Todd, Eliot) →
Biblical & homey (Elisabeth, Susanna, Rosemary, Peter, Timothy, Jesse)

But honestly, there are a lot of names that have been relatively consistent throughout the years, like Anya, Rose, Marie, and Timothy!

I’ve always had quite a classic style but it’s certainly evolved into a much more eclectic and unusual taste since I first got into names. I used to be into the classic names that are very common but now I find myself more drawn to vintage or names from other cultures, including more Irish names from my own culture.

I’ve gone through many, many style shifts as the years have passed.

First: [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f], [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] / [name_m]Noah[/name_m]

Second: [name_m]Reeve[/name_m], [name_f]Bethany[/name_f], [name_f]Jessa[/name_f], [name_f]Jaycee[/name_f] / [name_m]Noah[/name_m], [name_f]Riley[/name_f], [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]

Fourth: [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], [name_f]Flora[/name_f], [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] / [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], [name_m]Bruno[/name_m], [name_m]Gideon[/name_m], [name_m]Jasper[/name_m], [name_f]Frankie[/name_f]

Fifth: [name_f]Hallelujah[/name_f], Hopestill, [name_f]Remember[/name_f] / [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m], [name_m]Ransom[/name_m], [name_m]Bravery[/name_m]

Sixth: [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f], [name_f]Ada[/name_f] / [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m], [name_f]Haven[/name_f], [name_m]Wilder[/name_m], [name_m]Asher[/name_m], [name_f]Sage[/name_f]

What a collection! I didn’t include the times I went back to old styles or had slightly different favorites, but those are the six major ones and their rough timeline. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Ooh you’ve had an interesting naming journey! I especially love your outdoorsy and storybook-esque (swoon) and cute cottagecore names (ugh we need to bring back Todd!)

I like the consistency in your taste even with such a varied amount of names, your styles kind of seamlessly weave into one another, with your fifth being a fun, distinct bonus (swooning over [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m], [name_m]Ransom[/name_m], Bravery)

I started liking boys’ names around age 10… so

Ages 10-13:

I would say that my style definitely started out as super short, common, and modern. I think it’s slowly evolved to become more classic, vintage, and regal.

You’ve got a lot of great classics all across the board! [name_f]Love[/name_f] that [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] has stayed a consistent favorite :heartpulse: Funny that you started liking boys names later too :joy: I didn’t give them a second thought until teenagehood lol

also: not sure where you got Indo from but really like it!!! Maybe more so for a boy though?

I went from a very feminine and long (Ophelia, [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f], Evangeline), to a more tailored, vintage and berry-ish style (Matilda, [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], Hazel), and now I’m preferring a mixture of eclectic with hints of dark academia and cottagecore (Sylvie, [name_f]Nimue[/name_f], Elswyth) along with some vintage favorites (Iris, Juliet.)

I went from 'preppy trendy outliers’ so names that sounded trendy but maybe werent ‘popular’ like [name_m]Eaton[/name_m] & [name_f]Mariah[/name_f] etc (this is back when ‘Aidan’ was just getting ro peak popularity)

Now I would describe my style as 'adventurous 1800’s namer’ so names that someone in the 1800"s/early 1900’s would’ve used if they were adventurous namers. So they have an old fashioned feel, but arent classic old fashioned names. Like Andeline/Ondeline, Annevieve, Elisende, [name_f]Allifair[/name_f], plus suprising words names and virtue names like [name_f]Prairie[/name_f], [name_f]Modesty[/name_f], [name_f]Silence[/name_f]. For boys its a little more traditional but still not the top popular classics, like [name_m]Alder[/name_m], [name_m]Ira[/name_m], [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m], [name_m]Foster[/name_m] etc.

it’s honestly hard to remember all of them, but here’s my best attempt !!

girls:
american trendy (emilia, alessia, olive, kaia) →
elaborate vintage (clementine, adelaide, marguerite, rosalind) →
familiar cottagecore (annie, maisie, caroline, mabel) →
pan-european chic / central & eastern european (flora, anouk, karolína, zsófia)

boys:
scandinavian & american trendy (magnus, isak, oliver, elliot) →
quirky classic (edmund, lionel, nathaniel, wilbur) →
short & familiar (toby, louie, ren, george) →
pan-european chic / central & eastern european (valentin, elio, luka, maksym)

it’s interesting to remember i did also like some more european names back in my very early days - i’d have olivia & federica in the same UC (or signature, back then!) so in a way i’ve come full circle
