Tell me your very honest thoughts on the name Maris, please?

I absolutely love the name and the connection to the sea and the Virgin [name]Mary[/name]. I think it’s feminine and offbeat and sounds a little upper-crusty. My husband doesn’t think it’s great for a little girl but I think it’s uncommon but familiar and cool and will age well. When I’ve asked other people’s opinions, they have ranged from quite positive to utter dislike. Some of the dislikers have said it’s “odd”, “masculine” and “clunky”.

I’d just like to see what most Nameberries think of [name]Maris[/name]. I’m wondering if I hear something very opposite of what others hear/feel about this name.

Thanks so much!

I like it. I could picture on a popular, sporty, outgoing girl. I think it’s a hard name for baby/toddler to carry, but definitely see on a little girl to an adult. Could you pick something more girly like [name]Marissa[/name] to appease your husband and call her [name]Maris[/name]??

Spunky! “Uncommon but familiar and cool,” Indeed! Though, [name]Marin[/name]/[name]Maren[/name] is a bit more appealing to me.

On it’s own, I kind of like it! Pretty similar to one of my own faves, “[name]Iris[/name].”

However, I feel obligated to warn you about a fairly recent negative association with this name on the show [name]Frasier[/name]. [name]Maris[/name] is [name]Niles[/name]’ uber-rich, mean, selfish, over-bearing, crazy wife/ex-wife who you never actually see, but hear plenty of awful things about. Being an avid fan of that show, [name]Maris[/name] could never work for me. If the reference doesn’t bother you and/or you are young enough and aren’t familiar with the show, I would go for it!

I think it comes off as a bit masculine because of [name]Harris[/name] and [name]Morris[/name]…

That aside, it’s quite pretty.

I’ve absolutely loved the name [name]Maris[/name] ever since hearing it on the television sitcom “[name]Frasier[/name]”. [name]Maris[/name] was [name]Niles[/name]’ ex-wife. As tintri stated, Maris was not portrayed as a pleasant woman on the show. But I still think it’s beautiful and unique, but not weird. I plan on using it as MN someday.

I find it a little harsh to the ear, personally. I think because it reminds me of the word ‘[name]Brisk[/name].’
Not a huge fan of the ssss sound at the end.
I prefer [name]Maren[/name]/[name]Marin[/name].

I love [name]Maris[/name]! My Husband doesn’t like it as much either and I wish he did. It would be a top runner for me if so. He does like [name]Maren[/name] and we gave that some consideration.

Good [name]Luck[/name]!

I think it’s a great name! Spunky and different but not too out there.

Thanks for your reply. I think that [name]Maris[/name] [name]Crane[/name] is probably the first time I’d ever heard the name. Although she is portrayed as very unpleasant, I still just love the name. The show does still run in syndication but I don’t think a lot of people would really make a connection to the character’s name and a new baby’s name (could be very off base on that assumption!).

The character’s connection did trouble me a bit at first but not much anymore. Thanks so much for taking the time to mention it

I do like [name]Maren[/name] a lot too!

I liike it…but think it needs a girly, frilly kind of middle name IE: [name]Maris[/name] [name]Arabella[/name]

I really like [name]Maris[/name]! Another good suggestion is [name]Marin[/name]. Good luck; I hope you use it!

I’ve always wondered why [name]Maris[/name] wasn’t used more often. I think it’s pretty nice!

I don’t dislike it, but I don’t think it has the most pleasing sound. It’s a little abrupt and hissy. Of course, I was a fraiser fan too, so it could just be [name]Maris[/name] crane getting stuck in my head.

Ahh! I just realized what was holding me back from it when I posted on your [name]Maris[/name] [name]Odette[/name] thread! There’s this [name]Christian[/name] radio drama I grew up listening to, and there was this one episode where these two kids in the show went to this mythical land of [name]Meris[/name]/[name]Maris[/name]/[name]Marys[/name] (not sure how it was spelled, it’s an audio show, lol), said like [name]MARE[/name]-iss (is that how you’re saying [name]Maris[/name]? Or more like [name]MAR[/name]-iss?), and while it was such a fun two episodes (basically an allegory of the story of [name]Gideon[/name] in the Bible, if you’re familiar with it–the two kids were in this uprising to overthrow an evil nation from controlling the people of [name]Maris[/name] with God’s help, etc.), but I guess I just associate it with the bad people running the nation of [name]Maris[/name] that I don’t really see the total appeal. I kind of just associate it with a mythical place, rather than as a beautiful Mary variant. Now that I have associated it with [name]Marisa[/name], though, which I utterly love (mah-[name]REE[/name]-sah, not mah-RISS-ah), I’m growing to like it a lot more. I do prefer [name]Marisa[/name], but [name]Maris[/name] is interesting. I don’t know if you’re really a nickname person, but I think [name]Ari[/name] would be a perfect nn for it, especially if your hubby needs something for convincing that it could work on a little girl/baby, and [name]Maris[/name] [name]Odette[/name] is really great with your other kids. I also think the nn [name]Ari[/name] fits in really well with [name]Juliette[/name], [name]Bella[/name], and [name]Mia[/name], although I’m biased–if I had two girls today, they’d probably be [name]Bella[/name] and [name]Ari[/name].

I’m still very much in love with your MN choice, though! [name]Odette[/name] is a personal favorite and I’ve been crushing on it as a FN, lately. As it is right now, it’s a MN on my own list, I think it’s fabulous.

Good luck!

I like it very much! It’s cool, and modern sounding, I think. Yet, it’s also approachable and familiar.

I knew a girl named [name]Carys[/name] once and thought it was lovely and it is Irish. I think [name]Maris[/name] is just as beautiful.

I really like [name]Maris[/name]! I would be excited to meet one.

Yay! Mostly positive!
Thanks so much, berries
