So I saw this question posed elsewhere, and the answer was a resounding “no”. But it made me wonder, since I’ve always loved [name_f]Tess[/name_f] and had no such feelings for [name_f]Theresa[/name_f] – do you all think [name_f]Tess[/name_f] could be a pet name for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], especially considering that [name_f]Bess[/name_f] already is?
I think it would be a bit of a stretch if I’m honest. I do love [name_f]Tess[/name_f] as a nn of [name_f]Esther[/name_f] though.
I’d have to say no, I don’t see it being a nickname for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. Personally I think [name_f]Tess[/name_f] stands just fine on its own, though I prefer [name_f]Tessa[/name_f].
It seems like a stretch to me but Nameberry’s list Nicknames for Elizabeth has it on there, so I guess it could work! Still, I think [name_f]Tess[/name_f] is an excellent name on its own - it doesn’t need to be a nickname for anything. (I’m biased, though, since I named my dog [name_f]Tess[/name_f]!)
I don’t think it works. [name_f]Tess[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is a nice combo though.
I think [name_f]Tess[/name_f] works best as a name in its own right. It’s waaaay too much of a stretch for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f].
I think that it’s a stretch, but it could work. What about using [name_f]Tessa[/name_f], [name_f]Tess[/name_f], or [name_f]Theresa[/name_f] as a middle? So [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Theresa[/name_f], or maybe name her [name_f]Tess[/name_f] or [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. Or maybe try another name, like [name_f]Esther[/name_f], or maybe even [name_f]Elizabet[/name_f] or [name_f]Elizabetta[/name_f] could work better. But I think if you used [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and had another name that started with T as the middle, it could work? It might still be a bit of a stretch though.
It’s definitely a stretch. [name_f]Tess[/name_f] or [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] is lovely on its own.
I think it’s a stretch. [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] is nice on its own. There’s also [name_f]Thessaly[/name_f].
It’s too much of a stretch for me, and I like [name_f]Tess[/name_f] for something other than [name_f]Theresa[/name_f].
[name_f]Esther[/name_f] or [name_f]Tacita[/name_f] are probably my faves. I’ve also heard [name_f]Theodora[/name_f] suggested. I love [name_f]Tess[/name_f] and I love [name_f]Theodora[/name_f] but not sure about [name_f]Tess[/name_f] as a NN for [name_f]Theodora[/name_f].
It’s a bit of a stretch, sure, but I know an [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] that goes by [name_f]Tess[/name_f] so go for it!
I think it does, although it was too much of a stretch for me to commit to it. When I was in my [name_f]Tess[/name_f] phase, and wanted a longer form for her, [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] was one I got suggested a few times to get to [name_f]Tess[/name_f], and it still sticks in my head as a viable option. Not as straightforward as something like [name_f]Theresa[/name_f] or [name_f]Thessaly[/name_f], but still usable, regardless.
I now have just [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] on my list, but I do like the idea of [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] nn [name_f]Tess[/name_f] a lot. [name_m]Just[/name_m] wish I were more brave.
I’ve also heard of [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] nn [name_f]Tess[/name_f], too, which is a stretch for me, but I’m not sure it’s any more so than [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f]/[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is.
Good luck!
I think [name_f]Tess[/name_f] works as a nn for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. Normally I’d say it’s too much of a stretch, since they share the same sounds but in a different order, but [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] seems to be one of those names for which all kinds of things go as a nickname. [name_f]Tess[/name_f] isn’t really any more of a stretch than [name_f]Bess[/name_f] or [name_f]Lilibet[/name_f]. I like the PPs’ suggestion of [name_f]Tess[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] for you too.
[name_f]Tess[/name_f] or [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] are just fine on their own.
I think it’s a bit of a stretch, but not an impossible one.
It’s often a nn for [name_f]Esther[/name_f] (as @maerad suggested), as well as [name_f]Theresa[/name_f]/[name_f]Therese[/name_f]/[name_f]Teresa[/name_f] etc.
Other possibilities that I don’t think have been mentioned on this thread:
Classic/traditional: [name_f]Theodosia[/name_f], [name_f]Teresia[/name_f]/[name_f]Theresia[/name_f], [name_f]Tertia[/name_f]
Modern: [name_f]Tessia[/name_f], [name_f]Tressa[/name_f]
A bit ‘out-there’: [name_f]Tempest[/name_f]/[name_f]Tempeste[/name_f]
One that’s not on nameberry: Tesni.
It’s quite modern-feeling, so it’s not really the same style as [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], but it’s worth a mention. Behindthename says it means ‘warmth from the sun’ in Welsh, and a few other sites say something similar. Tesni [name_m]Evans[/name_m] is a squash player - there’s a Welsh pronunciation of her name here: http://www.pronouncekiwi.com/Tesni%20Evans . A bit like ‘TES-nee’/ ‘[name_f]Tess[/name_f]-nee’
I don’t mind nns that are a bit of a stretch, so I say yes it’s possible. Maybe spelling [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] like this helps just a pinch?
