[name_f]My[/name_f] wife and I are considering the name [name_f]Maya[/name_f] for our baby girl. Our main concern is alliteration. Our last name is . We’re worried that the double sound in the first syllable is too much. Thoughts, advice, suggestions?

It really depends on what you think of alliteration. I personally like it. The Ma sounds are a bit different ([name_f]MY[/name_f] and MAH) so it doesn’t sound too sing-songy. If it was [name_f]Maya[/name_f] Myers or [name_m]Manuel[/name_m] Manners, I would find that too much. Our last name starts with T, and we wouldn’t rule out all T names, just ones that are T-heavy (e.g., [name_f]Tatiana[/name_f]) or sound too much like our surname.

I think it is fine, and alliteration often lends a bit of spunk, as long as the names aren’t too close. [name_f]Maya[/name_f] Manners is fine. As the above poster said, if it was [name_f]Maya[/name_f] Myers, then it might be a no no, but your last name sounds fine. Good luck :).

Hmm. I think it might be a little too singsongy-- said quickly, it’d sound like “my manners.” Maybe use [name_f]Aya[/name_f] or [name_f]Amaya[/name_f] in order to avoid the alliteration?

Thanks for all of the feedback. I should add that our alternative at this point is [name_f]Isla[/name_f]. (In both cases, we’d go with the middle name [name_f]Isobel[/name_f].)

Immediately brought to mind the phrase, ¨Mind your manners.¨ Juvenile, but most likely a projection of my own worries about my daughter being teased due to our unfortunate last name.

Those are both beautiful names, so you would go with either [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] or [name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_f]Isobel[/name_f]?

[name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] is gorgeous, but with your last name I prefer [name_f]Isla[/name_f].

Yes, in all likelihood we would go with [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] regardless of the first name.

Maybe we should open this up. If [name_f]Maya[/name_f] is too sing-songy (which we are starting to think it might be), do you have other suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I prefer [name_f]Isla[/name_f] with your last name.

Our last name starts with M as well and I’ve pretty much ruled out all M names for us. :frowning:

I love both names but prefer [name_f]Isla[/name_f] with your last name.

[name_f]Maya[/name_f] and [name_f]Isla[/name_f] are both lovely, but with your last name, I prefer [name_f]Isla[/name_f]. Other options:

[name_f]Caia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lila[/name_f]
[name_f]Delilah[/name_f]
[name_f]Calla[/name_f]
[name_f]Zoey[/name_f]
[name_f]Celia[/name_f]
[name_f]Aria[/name_f]
[name_f]Dahlia[/name_f]
[name_f]Elena[/name_f]
[name_u]Elia[/name_u]
[name_f]Eliane[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
[name_f]Eva[/name_f]
[name_f]Lana[/name_f]
[name_f]Nina[/name_f]
[name_f]Nola[/name_f]

I think it sounds fine. The first syllable isn’t identical even though the first and last names begin with the same two letters. I also rather like the name [name_f]Maya[/name_f].

The only thing that might bother me (and this is not just a small but rather a minuscule consideration) is that any monogram is going to look really unbalanced. If I were truly on the fence between two names (and therefore looking for a tiebreaker), that might tip the scale. But if you like [name_f]Maya[/name_f] more than [name_f]Isla[/name_f], then I wouldn’t give this a second thought.

Thanks for the suggestions, mickie9.
