Texana?

The search continues for [name_f]Baby[/name_f] Girl’s name and her great grandmother suggested this family name. It was a great-great somebody’s name and she said she almost used it for my mother-in-law, but ultimately decided against it. It feels slightly out there, like so vintage it could be a modern, made up name. As far as I can tell it’s been in use since at least the 1880’s but never got popular. I’m not sure if it’s right for us or will just end up a “guilty pleasure” name, but i do find it genuinely cool….but maybe “too cool” for our family? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have to be a hipster or a [name_m]Texas[/name_m] rodeo cowgirl to name your kid this name??

It’s pretty cool to me! [name_f]Do[/name_f] you live in [name_m]Texas[/name_m]? I would assume yes. That said, I’ve met a [name_f]Dakota[/name_f] who’s not from [name_f]Dakota[/name_f]. Part of me wants to say “If [name_f]Dakota[/name_f], [name_f]Alaska[/name_f], & [name_f]Carolina[/name_f] are names, why not Texana?” the other part of me is like “another trendy, made up name” (Even though I know you said it has a history of use, I perceive it as made up).

If you love it, go for it. If you’re borderline, I would continue the search.

No, we do not live in [name_m]Texas[/name_m]. I was surprised actually when trying to read about the name that there is a town in our state called [name_f]Texana[/name_f] though. I feel a little weird about place names if they’re right in your area. For instance, I used to teach preschool in [name_m]Chapel[/name_m] [name_m]Hill[/name_m] and we had a little girl named [name_m]Chapel[/name_m], that’s too much for me.

[name_f]My[/name_f] issue is I’m not in love or dead set on anything so it’s making it very difficult! [name_f]My[/name_f] top 2 were both vetoed, one because he just didn’t like it and the other had some conflicts we both agreed made it unusable for us.

This is exactly where my thoughts are with this name. Like why can’t it be a name if other states/countries are, yet at the same time I’m also “oh yet another made up name” even though it’s not :see_no_evil:

I do like it though, it’s different yet appealing & has a flare to it. For me it would stay a GP but if you like it definitely use it

For me it’s different than other state/place names like [name_f]Alaska[/name_f] or [name_m]Dallas[/name_m], because it’s more so… a descriptor? It’s the word “Texan” with an -a at the end to make it a girl name, so I’d find it odd on someone who isn’t Texan, whereas I wouldn’t find [name_f]Alaska[/name_f] odd on someone not from [name_f]Alaska[/name_f].

I’m also just not a fan of it in general since it seems very made up at first glance, but the nickname [name_f]Annie[/name_f] or even [name_m]Tex[/name_m] could be cute. I probably would assume that a Texana’s parents were “Texas rodeo cowgirls” to quote you, if that bothers you.

Definitely Texas rodeo cowgirl in a vintage Americana way. It’s fun, and I love that it’s a family name! I do think it’s one of those names you’d have to be 100% committed to, considering it’s an unusual (and probably quite polarizing) choice.

It is intriguing, though it does feel like its something you’d use if you felt strongly about [name_m]Texas[/name_m] and being Texan?

As a Texan, I would not use this name unless you were willing to accept that many will make assumptions about y’all’s values. I for one would think y’all’d be pretty conservative for using a name like [name_f]Texana[/name_f].

(The excessive use of “y’all” in this post was mostly unintentional, but I do think it adds a tinge of authenticity to my comment )

I think [name_f]Texana[/name_f] sounds nice, but it is essentially an adjective form of the state name. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if you are not in [name_m]Texas[/name_m], I would assume you are a very Texan family. If that’s your vibe then go for it!
