I saw the movie [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u] over the weekend and I absolutely fell in love with the female leads name [name_f]Eilis[/name_f] (pronounced A-lish as she’s Irish) and it is just so beautiful and unique! Sadly I would probably never use it as I would hate to have to constantly correct people (now I know how [name_f]Saoirse[/name_f] [name_m]Ronan[/name_m] feels!) Granted my daughter’s name is [name_f]Majken[/name_f] so never say never though I think theyou would majorly clash as a sibset. What is your one favorite name that you love, but would probably never use and why?
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] is my all time favorite name, but my bf dislikes it, (he didn’t even know it was a name… he’s not so much of a reader). But I might use it as a middle, if he’s okay with it.
I also like [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], but as I live in [name_u]Sweden[/name_u], no one will be able to pronounce it…
I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Celia[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f], but our last name starts with the same “See” sound and I don’t think it flows very well. I also love the name [name_f]Jane[/name_f] as a first name… so so much. But I always think of “plain jane” and I second-guess it.
I have a similar problem as @neeeea, being Norwegian seriously limits my name-pool so there are hundreds of names I love but could never use because they sound completely different or are more or less unpronounceable to Norwegian. My dad’s English is atrocious, I could never use a name he would butcher every single time…
Other than that, I struggle to see how well I could (theoretically) get away with using some Greek names I love that have horrible stories attached to them (Leto, [name_f]Dido[/name_f], [name_f]Niobe[/name_f]).
Oh wow, [name_f]Majken[/name_f] is such a great name!
There’s a ton of names I love that I’d hesitate to use now because of my daughter’s name: [name_f]Juno[/name_f]. I love -o ending names ([name_f]Cleo[/name_f], [name_u]Hero[/name_u], [name_f]Io[/name_f] and [name_f]Sappho[/name_f] are probably my favourite first name options, plus [name_m]Leo[/name_m], [name_u]Theo[/name_u], [name_m]Ivo[/name_m], [name_m]Arto[/name_m] and a whole load more for boys), but I don’t want a matchy, “themed” sibset. The same goes for goddess names ([name_f]Clio[/name_f], Freyja, [name_f]Gaia[/name_f], [name_f]Hestia[/name_f], [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] and lots of others). With a few kids in between though, I might be OK with using one of them, and I’d definitely use any of the above as a middle.
Your daughter’s name is so cool! And [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] is lovely.
I’ve had a love affair with Edelweiss for about a year or two now…but alas, I don’t think I’d ever use it as a first name. Too many pronunciation issues and people in my life who would think it was downright weird.
I’m intrigued by [name_f]Majken[/name_f]. [name_m]How[/name_m] do you pronounce it?
Guilty pleasures for me are [name_f]Birdie[/name_f], [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f], [name_f]Clemence[/name_f], [name_u]Penrose[/name_u], [name_f]Verna[/name_f], and Egret. I wouldn’t use them but I love them all!
[name_u]Blue[/name_u] [name_u]Jay[/name_u]
[name_f]Lark[/name_f] (gp is first spot only)
[name_u]Sage[/name_u]
[name_f]Saffron[/name_f]
[name_f]Lotus[/name_f]
[name_f]Majken[/name_f] and [name_f]Eilis[/name_f] would be a wonderful sibset, imo!!
I can’t use [name_f]Ethel[/name_f], which is the name of the kindest person I’ve ever met. No one has ever been kinder to me except my Grandma, but [name_f]Ethel[/name_f] wasn’t related to me so her kindness seemed so special. But… my [name_m]French[/name_m] family pronounces the name eh-[name_m]TULL[/name_m]-ah. [name_u]Truly[/name_u] butchering it.
It’s pronounced My-[name_m]Ken[/name_m]. I felt like it was different but not so much so that people would be like “WHY???”
Also I apologize for only positing this in girls names. I meant to post it in the baby names forum but I wasn’t paying attention. I really like some of the names you’ve all posted. I may be brave and use some myself one day
My guilty pleasure name is [name_f]Journey[/name_f] [name_f]Beloved[/name_f]. I don’t know what it is, but I heard it somewhere and I just thought it was the sweetest meaningful name. However, I would never be brave enough to use [name_f]Journey[/name_f] or [name_f]Beloved[/name_f]. And stranger yet, that’s not normally my style. I normally prefer classic names with a modern twist, but alas it captured my heart.
I like it a lot! It’s going on my list if we end up with another girl
I love [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] and [name_f]Linnea[/name_f]. [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] is a [name_m]Fleetwood[/name_m] [name_m]Mac[/name_m] song that I absolutely adore and [name_f]Linnea[/name_f] is just a beautiful floral name. I even had [name_f]Linnea[/name_f] [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] as a combo for a while but neither really goes with my sibset. Plus both names are really unheard of where I live unless you’re familiar with 70s bands. Not to mention the fact that it’s nearly impossible to come up with a middle name for [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] that flows. I still love them though, but as guilty pleasures
I also really like [name_f]Evelina[/name_f] and [name_f]Noelle[/name_f] but no one seems to like [name_f]Noelle[/name_f] and everyone I’ve met is so unfamiliar with [name_f]Evelina[/name_f]!
[name_f]Hera[/name_f]. It has been my favorite name for ages, but my future-step-son’s bio mom just used it for her new daughter. IN WHAT UNIVERSE DOES THAT HAPPEN. I guess I could use it anyway and we could all fight it out on [name_u]Maury[/name_u] or something.
[name_f]Amethyst[/name_f], [name_f]Eirene[/name_f], [name_f]Parisa[/name_f], [name_f]Sparrow[/name_f] ~ Actually names I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] but would never use for different reasons.
I [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Willamina[/name_f]! I love [name_f]Willa[/name_f] and [name_f]Mina[/name_f] as nicknames for it. It works perfect as an honor name to my father ([name_m]William[/name_m] and grandfathers). Unfortunately my husband HATES it. Plus the few people I have mentioned the idea to either are quiet for a moment too long or give me a weird look… So it’s safe to say it’s on the GP list.
I really love so many names I’d never use…
[name_f]Iphigenia[/name_f] (I’ve tried to figure out so many ways to make this one wearable, but alas…)
[name_f]Parthenope[/name_f] (The average observer would pronounce this [name_m]Parth[/name_m]-uh-nope. Not very attractive, unfortunately)
Quiterie (It has “quit” in it, even though it’s not said that way)
Melusina (but I want to so badly…I may recant on this one)
[name_f]Fiammetta[/name_f] (I’m not at all Italian)
[name_f]Hadassah[/name_f] (likely self-explanatory. Perhaps I could manage with a different spelling)
[name_f]Ismene[/name_f] (Horrible teasing potential but so gorgeous…maybe this can be a middle at some point…maybe…)
I’m sure I have more of these.
@sissimi - how on earth does that happen? That’s a crazy predicament…sorry
