I’m crushing on the nameThatcher lately, but I also have some misgivings. The biggest is the association with [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m]. I’m not British but my partner’s family is (dad’s side). [name_m]Can[/name_m] some Brits weigh in on whether this would be a prominent negative association or not?
Secondly, my first choice boy name is [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m] and [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] feel like brothers or a mismatch? Any other suggestions to go with either name? If it helps, my current girl picks are [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] (1st) and [name_f]Lavender[/name_f] or [name_f]Waverley[/name_f] (2nd)
I’m not in the UK, and that is a huge association. It depends on whether you would want people to think it honors [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m].
I love [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m], and stylistically it goes with [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m].

I really don’t know much about [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m], but I think that [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m] is adorable. Sporty, outdoorsy, witty, simple & not over done. [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] & [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m] are kind of perfect in my opinion. They both have that sweet, fun loving, slightly quirky impish vibe. I would swoon over brothers called [name_m]Thatch[/name_m] & [name_u]Finn[/name_u]!
Actually my first thought is roofs, then [name_m]Heath[/name_m] [name_m]Ledger[/name_m] in A [name_m]Knight[/name_m]'s Take, then [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m].
It goes well with [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m].
Some other names that feel similar to me are [name_m]Fletcher[/name_m] and [name_m]Sayer[/name_m].
Also not British, just had to pop in because this was my favorite boy’s name all throughout high school and early college! I think it goes well with [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m].
Thatcher is implicitly associated with [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] for me as a [name_u]Brit[/name_u]. It doesn’t have to be a negative association depending on your politics. But in choosing the name I would expect that you were a lover of her and her politics in meeting someone with that name.
Thanks for your honesty. What if the person you met wasn’t British, would you still first think they were named for the politician? Or would it just seem like a weird coincidence?
For the record, moving to the UK is actually an option on the table for us right now so given your feedback I’ll be putting the name on the back burner and would only consider it again if we choose to stay in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] (where the association will be a lot weaker, maybe even non-existent for some). I only know [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] as [name_m]Britain[/name_m]’s (only?) female PM, but I have no idea what party she represented. I’ve always gotten the impression she wasn’t well-liked though, so that’s why I worry about a negative association. Maybe that just says something about the political views of the Brits I know lol
I’ve bounced [name_m]Fletcher[/name_m] around a lot, but I find saying it out loud to be a bit of a mouthful (especially compared to [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m]). It does feel like a strong backup contender if [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m] is off the table though.
You’re onto me - the witch theme is definitely a strong influence for my girls names!
Honestly, if I could find a way to be more subtle with it, I would love to continue the witches/magic theme with my boys names. In part, I think my love of [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m] comes from its similarity to [name_m]Thackeray[/name_m] (as in Binx from Hocus Pocus. [name_m]Thackeray[/name_m] itself just doesn’t do it for me). And [name_u]Salem[/name_u] is a guilty pleasure of mine. [name_m]Newton[/name_m] ([name_m]Newt[/name_m]) was on my list but my partner quickly vetoed it.
Yes, I have a black cat (Fidget - it suits her well).
Not a [name_u]Brit[/name_u], so I don’t think of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m] at all, even though I know who she is. I think of a thatch roof (which I love, so that’s a good association for me!). I think [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m] and [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] work as brothers.
I’m also not British. The [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] Tatcher connection, which is very strong in my mind, is pretty negative. However, after I make an effort to consider the name and another person (boy or man) called Tatcher, my opinion changes. It would take meeting a new Tatcher to transform my view of it, so why not? Save Tatcher from [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]!
I absolutely love [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m]! It’s so handsome, and I like that it’s both strong while still being soft and sweet. I’m not British, so I don’t think of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m] myself. [name_f]My[/name_f] only association with the name [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m] is [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m] [name_u]Grey[/name_u] from Grey’s Anatomy! it’s where I first heard the name!
I think [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m] & [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] actually sound like the perfect set of brothers! they feel quirky and adventurous together!
Also, just wanted to add, I absolutely love [name_f]Lavender[/name_f]! (and [name_m]Thackeray[/name_m], [name_u]Salem[/name_u], [name_m]Newt[/name_m], and [name_m]Fletcher[/name_m]! )
If you were living in the U.K. yes. If I met you outside of the U.K. I would probably just think it was a strange choice - only strange because of how implicitly the name is linked to our first female and somewhat controversial prime minister (we have since had [name_f]Theresa[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f]) I wouldn’t think you’d have chosen it after her if you were not living in the U.K. but when I think [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m] all I think is [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] I have no other association.
As much as I love [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m], I am a little turned off by the popularity of [name_u]Finn[/name_u].
What are some more uncommon names you could picture as a brother to [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m]?
Brit here and it’s too [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] for me. She was such a divisive prime minister too. But if the name has meaning for you in some other way I wouldn’t let it sway you entirely, just get prepared for the questions about it.
Like, I see [name_u]London[/name_u] mentioned as a first name which to me is bizarre as it’s the city I grew up in and to me, it’s not a name at all. But in other countries it’s no different to calling a kid, say, [name_u]Paris[/name_u] or [name_u]Sydney[/name_u], both of which I’ve come across in the UK. So while [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m] is an odd choice here I can see it working fine in another country.
