I would love to hear what/who you think of and what you “see” when you hear these four J names. Also which you like, love, dislike:
Jane
Jean
Joan
June
I’ll throw in my two cents’ worth after I hear from some others. Thanks.

First thoughts:
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]: [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Eyre[/name_f], [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Austen[/name_u]
[name_u]Jean[/name_u]: [name_u]Scout[/name_u] [name_u]Finch[/name_u] from To Kill a Mockingbird
[name_u]Joan[/name_u]: [name_u]Joan[/name_u] of [name_m]Arc[/name_m]
[name_u]June[/name_u]: [name_u]June[/name_u] [name_m]Cleaver[/name_m], the month
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] – This name is super versatile in my head, I can picture [name_f]Jane[/name_f] to be sporty, artistic, shy, outgoing, loud, quiet, or all of the above. No one specific image comes to mind.
[name_u]Jean[/name_u] – [name_u]Jean[/name_u] makes me think of knitting and log cabins. It has a warm, comforting vibe.
[name_u]Joan[/name_u] – I’ve only known older Joans, so I picture a friendly older woman.
[name_u]June[/name_u] – I imagine a spunky girl who loves nature and running around outside. Maybe a redhead, not sure why. She probably has muddy knees and leaves in her hair.
[name_f]My[/name_f] rankings would be 1) [name_f]Jane[/name_f], 2) [name_u]Jean[/name_u], 3) [name_u]June[/name_u], and 4) [name_u]Joan[/name_u]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]: [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Porter[/name_u] from [name_m]Tarzan[/name_m], [name_f]Jane[/name_f] Villanueva from [name_f]Jane[/name_f] the Virgin, [name_f]Jane[/name_f] “Eleven” from Stranger Things, [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Fonda[/name_f], [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_m]Lynch[/name_m], [name_f]Jane[/name_f] (Wendy’s daughter), [name_f]Jane[/name_f] Goodall, [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Austen[/name_u] [hid the ST one because it’s a spoiler!]
[name_u]Jean[/name_u]: my cousin, a few other ladies I’ve known, [name_u]Jean[/name_u] [name_m]Bueller[/name_m] “Jeanie” from [name_m]Ferris[/name_m] [name_m]Bueller[/name_m], [name_u]Jean[/name_u] [name_u]Louise[/name_u] [name_u]Finch[/name_u] “Scout”, [name_u]Jean[/name_u] [name_u]Grey[/name_u] from [name_u]Marvel[/name_u]
[name_u]Joan[/name_u]: my cousin’s mom, [name_u]Joan[/name_u] [name_u]Jett[/name_u], [name_u]Joan[/name_u] of [name_m]Arc[/name_m], [name_u]Joan[/name_u] Cusack, [name_u]Joan[/name_u] [name_m]Crawford[/name_m], [name_u]Joan[/name_u] [name_u]Rivers[/name_u]
[name_u]June[/name_u]: the month & summer, [name_u]June[/name_u] [name_m]Cleaver[/name_m], the names [name_f]Juno[/name_f] and [name_u]Juniper[/name_u]
jane - i prefer mary jane, but jane is pretty too! it’s so classic that i don’t have much to say bout it. i find it hard to pair with middles, for some reason, but it’s probably my second-favourite of the bunch.
jean - i think of willa jean from the ramona books and alice jean from the bean trees! two of my favourite double-barrel names. that said, jean is my least favourite of the four on her own.
joan - joni mitchell! and joan of arc. i prefer just joni, but joan is nice as well.
june - for some reason my first association is june cleaver, although i’ve never seen leave it to beaver. probably my favourite of the bunch - i think “junie” is adorable, and it’s such a sweet, spunky name!
I actually really like all 4, but the only one I can 100% see myself using is Jane/Jayne (prefer the Y for family reasons). I like [name_u]Joan[/name_u] but just don’t see myself as the mother to a [name_u]Joan[/name_u]? I guess [name_u]Jean[/name_u] is a close 2nd because I have [name_f]Jeanie[/name_f] on my list though!
thoughts wise:
jane: jayne mansfield, jane austen, a horrid relative, and an adorable past student, and jayne reminds me of my cousin.
jean: i dream of jeannie
joan: joan clarke (played by keira knightley in the imitation game)
june: my late grandma’s middle name (born in june!)
These four names are constant contenders for me ! I love how versatile they feel.
Right now I have a huge crush on [name_u]Joan[/name_u] ! I am trying to sell my husband on it
[name_u]June[/name_u] is beautiful! It’s also my birthday month. I constantly think of [name_f]Junie[/name_f] B [name_m]Jones[/name_m] ( expertly named)
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] - stunning! The simple elegance gets me every time
[name_u]Jean[/name_u]- one of my favourite names for a middle ! I love [name_f]Jeanette[/name_f] too
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] - my favorite! I read a novel with a girl who had a sister named [name_f]Jane[/name_f] nn [name_f]Janie[/name_f] and ever since it’s felt approachable and sweet - also I love the tie to [name_f]Jane[/name_f] Rizzoli.
It’s also a family name for me; I love [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]!
[name_u]June[/name_u] - second favorite; I’m crushing on [name_u]June[/name_u] quite a bit lately! I love her with a great L middle—I think [name_u]June[/name_u] [name_f]Lilibet[/name_f], [name_u]June[/name_u] [name_f]Lilia[/name_f], [name_u]June[/name_u] [name_f]Liora[/name_f], and [name_u]June[/name_u] [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] are fantastic!
Jean/Joan - dislike both…. They’re both very tired for me. I do like [name_f]Joanna[/name_f] or [name_f]Giovanna[/name_f] though.
Interesting answers! The reason I ask is that [name_f]Jane[/name_f] followed by [name_u]June[/name_u] scored high in my survey, but [name_u]Joan[/name_u] tanked and [name_u]Jean[/name_u] was even lower. Hardly a huge scientific study, but it does seem that [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_u]June[/name_u] are ascending and [name_u]Joan[/name_u] and [name_u]Jean[/name_u] descending and I wondered why.
I also wonder why I love [name_f]Jane[/name_f] when drop the e and it’s [name_u]Jan[/name_u] or add a t and it’s [name_f]Janet[/name_f] and I really do not like those names.
I like it names in, [name_f]Joanie[/name_f], [name_f]Janie[/name_f], [name_f]Junie[/name_f], and [name_f]Jeanie[/name_f]
[name_u]Joan[/name_u]- [name_u]Joan[/name_u] Cusack, [name_u]Joan[/name_u] [name_u]Rivers[/name_u]
Jean-Billy [name_u]Jean[/name_u]
[name_u]June[/name_u]- [name_u]June[/name_u] [name_u]Carter[/name_u] [name_m]Cash[/name_m] lovely name.
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]- [name_m]Tarzan[/name_m]. [name_u]Austen[/name_u]. [name_f]Lovely[/name_f] name.
Jane: love! love! One of my favourite names. Simple yet sophisticated. Feminine with no frills. It’s so perfect in many ways
Jane Andrews from Anne of Green Gables, but not a strong association
Jean: sweet! I can picture a fun, little girl with this name. No association
Joan: also sweet! Ready for a revival imo. No association
June: Simple and beautiful. June Harris from Lost in Space (Netflix)
All three rank high on my personal list
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] Judicious
[name_u]Jean[/name_u] Jimp
[name_u]Joan[/name_u] Jolly
[name_u]June[/name_u] Jaunty
my ranking:
i seriously love them all, my favourite is jean
i’m not really sure why i love them so much, they’re just so simple and pretty!
my first associations
jane: don’t really have any, it’s just a name to me
jean: jean louise finch
joan: joan jett
june: the month
I absolutely adore all four!!
First associations:
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]: just the name
[name_u]Jean[/name_u]: just the name
[name_u]Joan[/name_u]: [name_u]Joan[/name_u] of [name_m]Arc[/name_m]
[name_u]June[/name_u]: the month
Beyond that, I like them all. I think they’re all great names and choices, but if I had to rank them (to give you an idea of which ones I like best), I’d have to say:
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]: [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_m]Micheal[/name_m] [name_u]Banks[/name_u] bum (ending of a song from [name_f]Mary[/name_f] Poppins)
[name_u]Jean[/name_u]: [name_f]My[/name_f] grandmother
[name_u]Joan[/name_u]- [name_u]Joan[/name_u] of [name_m]Arc[/name_m]
[name_u]June[/name_u]- [name_f]My[/name_f] birth month!
I like them all, too. My favorite would be June, perhaps because I’ve never met one yet, so I don’t have any clear associations. But I also really like the sound and nn Junie.
I grew up with close friends named Jayne and Joni. Jayne always disliked her name and, like Anne of Green Gables, wished she had a longer, more romantical name. She is another name nerd that named her sons pretty uncommon names.
Jane also has more of a “tack-on” vibe to me, since I have family members and coworkers with names like Betty Jane and Mary Jane.
Joan does make me think of celebrities more than the other names, like Joan Cusack and Joan Rivers, as well as Joan from Mad Men. I do prefer Joanna more.
I have two aunts named Jeannie, which is cute. Jean makes me think of Gene and jeans.
All of these are pretty simple and straightforward names. They don’t really dazzle me, but I like them, if that makes sense.
Such diverse answers.
Someone mentioned how versatile [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is and I agree. I think of elderly spinster sleuth, Miss [name_f]Jane[/name_f] Marple, and explorer/animal advocate, [name_f]Jane[/name_f] Goodall. [name_f]Jane[/name_f] seems to encompass all strong, lively girls and women. It always seems a good sign in a book when the character is called [name_f]Jane[/name_f]. I get why it’s so loved on nameberry.
I also get the love for [name_u]June[/name_u], which is my birthday month and summer starting and graduations and weddings and no more school. Plus [name_f]Junie[/name_f] and [name_f]Janie[/name_f] are cute nns, unlike to my mind, [name_f]Jeannie[/name_f] and Joannie.
I still wonder why [name_u]Jean[/name_u] and [name_u]Joan[/name_u] are so unloved, yet I too love [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_u]June[/name_u] more.
[name_u]Jean[/name_u] reminds me of [name_u]Jean[/name_u] Pargeter, the character [name_f]Judi[/name_f] Dench played on the wonderful British sitcom, As Time Goes By. It seems a neat, tidy, competent middle-aged name.
But [name_u]Joan[/name_u]! From [name_u]Joan[/name_u] of [name_m]Arc[/name_m] to [name_u]Joan[/name_u] [name_u]Rivers[/name_u], [name_u]Joan[/name_u] [name_m]Crawford[/name_m] to [name_u]Joan[/name_u] Armatrading, [name_u]Joan[/name_u] [name_m]Osborne[/name_m] to [name_u]Joni[/name_u] [name_m]Mitchell[/name_m], [name_u]Joan[/name_u] [name_u]Baez[/name_u] to [name_u]Joan[/name_u] Sutherland… It is a titanic name and I think it will become more popular as we honor strong women more in our naming.
But for now, I love [name_u]June[/name_u] and [name_f]Jane[/name_f] most.
