We have a beautiful 3yr old [name_u]August[/name_u] [name_u]Gray[/name_u], who embodies the whimsy, fun and everything we loved about his name.
We’re now expecting our second, and we need help with a name that compliments and, to be honest, is as fabulous, as [name_u]August[/name_u] [name_u]Gray[/name_u].
We have the following list but would love ideas/thoughts:
[name_u]August[/name_u] [name_u]Gray[/name_u] is adorable! [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], or [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] for a girl; [name_m]Atticus[/name_m], [name_u]Hudson[/name_u], [name_m]Milo[/name_m], [name_m]Leo[/name_m], or [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] for a boy?
[name_u]August[/name_u] [name_u]Gray[/name_u] is a hard act to follow…[name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_u]Story[/name_u] or [name_f]Scarlet[/name_f] for a girl . ( All names end in 't ') If you have more children you would have a colour theme which might feel too much . [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] [name_m]Cole[/name_m] is also my boys name choice .
[name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_u]Story[/name_u] and [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] are my favorites, as well as [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] [name_m]Cole[/name_m].
Those are great options! I think my favorites are [name_f]Esther[/name_f] [name_u]Jude[/name_u] and [name_m]Otis[/name_m] [name_u]Winter[/name_u]. Some other ideas…
[name_u]August[/name_u] [name_u]Gray[/name_u] is so beautiful. From your list, I think [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] [name_f]Greer[/name_f], [name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_u]Story[/name_u] ([name_u]LOVE[/name_u]!) and [name_m]Finnigan[/name_m] [name_m]Cole[/name_m] sound best with [name_u]August[/name_u] [name_u]Gray[/name_u].
Thanks so much ladies! Some wonderful suggestions in there. My husband isn’t sold on [name_f]Margot[/name_f], but it’s definitely a firm fav of mine. He’s in camp [name_f]Jemima[/name_f], but I’ve always been a strong/masculine female name lover, so names like [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_u]Jude[/name_u] etc speak to me.
@little tribe I have been following your post. I have fallen in love with [name_u]August[/name_u] [name_u]Gray[/name_u] and hopefully you will let us know what you decide. I just read [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] and thought now that’s a different style and i love it with [name_u]August[/name_u].
So we are now down to a few contenders thanks to this forum! [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] was actually our girls name for our first, which is of course [name_u]August[/name_u]. So it kind of feels like that name has moved on? Although I still [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] it.
We both like :
[name_f]Sunday[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
Hmm… I like [name_f]Sunday[/name_f] but with [name_u]August[/name_u] it feels a bit too “themey” to me (a month and a day name). I feel like a third child would have to be called [name_u]Winter[/name_u] or something and I’m not sure I like the matchiness.
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is lovely and sounds nice with [name_u]August[/name_u], if a bit more conservative. Is [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] a definite for the middle slot? Maybe something shorter with a bit more of a quirky/modern feel like [name_u]Gray[/name_u] would go better? Something like [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_u]Wren[/name_u], [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u], [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_u]Rue[/name_u], [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Lark[/name_f], [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Plum[/name_f], [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Fern[/name_f]…
[name_m]Digby[/name_m] [name_u]Scout[/name_u] is super-cool and fits with [name_u]August[/name_u] [name_u]Gray[/name_u] really well without feeling at all matchy. I think you’re onto a winner there
My first thought was [name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_u]Jude[/name_u], if you’re up for switching things around. I also like [name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_u]James[/name_u], although it might be a lil trendy for your taste.
[name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] is perfect with [name_u]August[/name_u] but I don’t like [name_m]Cole[/name_m] in the middle. What about [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] [name_m]Fox[/name_m] (alliteration?), [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] [name_m]Hart[/name_m], [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] [name_m]Koa[/name_m], [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] [name_u]Kai[/name_u], [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] [name_u]River[/name_u], [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] [name_u]Lane[/name_u]?
Now I see you’ve moved on to [name_f]Sunday[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], and [name_m]Digby[/name_m] [name_u]Scout[/name_u]…
[name_f]Sunday[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is cute, but [name_f]Sunday[/name_f] and [name_u]August[/name_u] are a bit silly together.
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is OK, nothing amazing. Would you call her by any nicknames?
[name_m]Digby[/name_m] [name_u]Scout[/name_u] is interesting, I honestly don’t know if it’s for a girl or boy. I don’t mind unisex names at all but I do like a fairly obvious middle to sort of steer the name one way or another. That’s just my opinion of course. If [name_m]Digby[/name_m] is a for a boy, (which is what I would assume in your case) I would love something like [name_m]Digby[/name_m] [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_m]Digby[/name_m] [name_m]William[/name_m], [name_m]Digby[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], [name_m]Digby[/name_m] [name_m]Joshua[/name_m], etc.
I love love love [name_u]August[/name_u] [name_u]Gray[/name_u] and [name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_u]Story[/name_u]! Either of your boys options are gorgeous!
I really like [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] with [name_u]August[/name_u]. I love the name [name_f]Harriet[/name_f].
I do like [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] in that it has so much it suits [name_u]August[/name_u] [name_u]Gray[/name_u] without being matching.
[name_u]August[/name_u] [name_u]Grey[/name_u] and I keep saying [name_u]August[/name_u] [name_m]Paul[/name_m] (a former explorer character) because they have the same intonation punch -dum da dum! or [| _ |] (as in poetic verse foot; stessed, unstressed, stressed syllable and I think its this intonation that gives [name_u]August[/name_u] [name_u]Gray[/name_u] the magic it has. Names like [name_f]Scarlet[/name_f] O’[name_f]Hara[/name_f] stay with us because oftheir stress patterns [name_f]IMO[/name_f].
Whilst [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] has a much more even rhythm. [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_m]Beecher[/name_m] [name_m]Stowe[/name_m] has this rhythm appeal for me. I would search for a name with rhythm;) [name_u]Love[/name_u] to know where you are at with the names now.
edited to add: I still love Margot Story too. I was under the impression you (OP) had had a change of heart on this one.
Oh my goodness I have been so overwhelmed with gratitude for the thoughtful responses here.
I agree now with [name_f]Sunday[/name_f] and [name_u]August[/name_u] - and I can totally see objectively how they just don’t quite work a matchy-themey vibe combo.
I love the discussion around tempo, which is so how we feel about [name_u]August[/name_u]'s name. Thanks @it_is_morning for bringing [name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_u]Story[/name_u] back - it was my husband who wasn’t sold, but I think the overwhelming love for it, and your discussion on beats and rhythm (we’re a musical family) has swayed him. I agree also with the [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] combo - [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is a family name, but we could shorten it a few options like [name_f]Betty[/name_f], or [name_f]Liza[/name_f] or [name_f]Beth[/name_f].
[name_m]Digby[/name_m] [name_u]Scout[/name_u] would definitely be for a boy, and I think it’s more known as a male name in Australia than OS.
Oh this is such a process everyone. Here is where we are at now:
Boys
[name_m]Finnigan[/name_m] [name_m]Cole[/name_m]
[name_u]Elliott[/name_u] [name_u]Scout[/name_u]
[name_m]Reuban[/name_m] [name_m]Wilder[/name_m]
[name_m]Whittaker[/name_m] [name_u]Scout[/name_u]
Girls
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f] [name_u]Rue[/name_u]
[name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_u]Story[/name_u] (my husband is STILL not on board)
[name_f]Henrietta[/name_f] [name_u]Jude[/name_u]
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] [name_u]Rue[/name_u]
It’s the putting them together on a piece of paper with [name_u]August[/name_u] [name_u]Gray[/name_u] that is proving the challenge. I feel like I don’t want the name to be less than, or less lyrical, than his. And it’s hard.
So tough! I like [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] [name_u]Scout[/name_u], [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] [name_m]Wilder[/name_m], [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] [name_u]Rue[/name_u] and [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] [name_u]Rue[/name_u] the most. [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] and [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] seem to work best with [name_u]August[/name_u] to me.
