The (final?) short list!

Hey everyone. Get comfy, this is gonna be a long one….

I think we have got our final list. We’ve posted a lot lately, sorry about that, but we just want to land on something and get it right. For us, we like to get the name squared away well before baby. It actually helps us to better connect to the idea of having another kid if the kid has an “identity” — not sure if any other berries can relate to this.

We would love to get final feedback on this list. What are your top three names out of what we’ve chosen?

A few things you should know, for context:

  1. My late father’s name was William Joshua. We named our first daughter Billie, after him, and intend to give this baby the middle name of Joshua, also after him. We are Jewish, so we also get a Hebrew name at birth. My dad’s Hebrew name was Zev, which means Wolf. We cannot use Zev as a first name because it’s very popular where I live.
  2. As per above point, when picking a name in our family, we also have to consider the Hebrew name too. So we have given thought to this as well, and included this in our list. (Sometimes we opted for a Yiddish name in our list, which works too)
  3. We are very big on nicknames. My daughter was born Billie but goes almost exclusively by Buzzy! So we have considered nicknames in our list as well.
  4. Our last name starts with an R, and rhymes with Fossil.

The names:

Howes Joshua R——-
Nickname: Howie, and would almost exclusively go by this
Hebrew: Chaim (meaning life)
Significance: Howes is my husband’s grandmother’s maiden name

Toby Joshua R——-
Nickname: Toto, Tojo
Hebrew: Tal (meaning dew)
Significance: my late aunt was Tobi

Arthur Joshua R——-
Nickname: Artie, and would almost exclusively go by this
Hebrew name: Avi (meaning my father)
Significance: none, we just like it

Lenard Joshua R——-
Nickname: Lenny
Hebrew: Liev/Lev (meaning heart)
Significance: none, we just like it. In fact, husband wanted Lev or Liev as first name, but I didn’t love it as a sibset.

Sylvan Joshua R——-
Nickname: Sly??
Hebrew name: Stav (meaning autumn or fall, when he will be born)
Significance: none, we just like it. Me more so than my husband, but he’s not against it. And I LOVE Stav.

Rudy Joshua R——-
Nickname: ??
Hebrew: Ze’ev or Zev (meaning wolf)
Significance: Rudy means “famous wolf”

Jonah Wolf R——-
Nickname: ??
Hebrew: Yona (meaning dove)
Significance: husband’s grandmother is Joan, wolf is connected to my dad

Julien Joshua R——-
Nickname: JJ
Hebrew: Yehoshua, which is Joshua in Hebrew
Significance: again, just really like it

Brody Joshua R——-
Nickname: ??
Hebrew: Boaz (meaning swiftness)
Significance: none, just like it; and think it makes for a nice sibset with Billie

Philip Joshua R——-
Nickname: Pip, Lippy, PJ
Hebrew: Faivel (technically Yiddish, meaning bright one)
Significance: none, just like it

Foster Joshua R——-
Nickname: ??
Hebrew: Faivel (technically Yiddish, meaning bright one)
Significance: none, just like it

Morrison Joshua R——-
Nickname: Morrie, Moose, Moon, Moss,
Mojo
Hebrew: Moshe (Hebrew name of Moses)
Significance: Van Morrison is a nod to my dad, two great grandfathers named Morris

If you’ve made it this far, wow, thank you for reading my novel. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts!

[name_f]My[/name_f] favorites from your options are [name_u]Jonah[/name_u] [name_u]Wolf[/name_u] and [name_u]Julien[/name_u] [name_m]Joshua[/name_m]. [name_u]Jonah[/name_u] [name_u]Wolf[/name_u] is cool without being too out there, and with significant honor to your dad. Either name will serve him well as an adult too!

I think [name_u]Billie[/name_u] and [name_m]Foster[/name_m] would make a nice sibset! [name_u]Jonah[/name_u] [name_u]Wolf[/name_u] has a very nice flow. Would you maybe consider just using Stav [name_m]Joshua[/name_m]?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.

Here are my thoughts on the list-

Howes-I wouldn’t necessarily think that I’d like this, but really do knowing that it’s a family name. Plus, Billie/Buzzy & [name_m]Howie[/name_m] are unexpected & adorable together.

Toby-This is also not a name that is generally my style. I’d usually suggest [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] nn [name_u]Toby[/name_u]. But since your daughter is just Billie; just [name_u]Toby[/name_u] feels perfect. And I love that it honors your aunt.

Arthur-I like [name_u]Arthur[/name_u], & [name_u]Billie[/name_u] & [name_u]Artie[/name_u] are charming. But I kind of love [name_u]Avi[/name_u] as a first name even more if that were an option. [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] isn’t that popular, but I do see it trending a bit.

Lenard-I love [name_m]Liev[/name_m] as a full name. It’s on my top personal list. It’s so beautiful & means ‘heart’. But alas, if you don’t like it. :joy: [name_m]Lenard[/name_m] is kind of quirky & a fun choice. I do think that [name_m]Leonard[/name_m] looks better though. Also, I like the nn [name_m]Lad[/name_m]! What do you think of that?

Sylvan-I like Stav too. Could just use that a fn? I can’t get on board with [name_m]Sylvan[/name_m]. Something about it sounds snake-y to me. That probably doesn’t make sense. I do think that the nn [name_m]Sly[/name_m] is clever.

Rudy-Not my cup of tea, but kind of cute & unexpected. A tongue twister with your last name maybe. I can’t believe [name_m]Zev[/name_m] is popular in your area. [name_m]Zev[/name_m] would be such a cool fn. Especially w/the nn Zevy.

Jonah-That’s really a sweet name. This is sort of popular in my area, but not too bad. Almost feels a bit bland next to [name_u]Billie[/name_u], but not a deal breaker.

Julien-I love love [name_u]Julian[/name_u] spelled this way. But I think that [name_u]Julien[/name_u] is okay. [name_u]Julian[/name_u] is more common, but [name_u]Julien[/name_u] may get misspelled. I don’t love JJ as much, even though [name_u]Julien[/name_u] [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] is beautiful. What about the nn [name_u]Jude[/name_u]? [name_u]Or[/name_u] [name_u]Jem[/name_u]?

Brody-Meh, I don’t know. It feels really popular & trendy in my opinion. [name_u]Billie[/name_u] & [name_m]Boaz[/name_m] would be neat.

Philip-Love Faivel! [name_m]Philip[/name_m] is a nice name. It doesn’t sparkle, but it’s solid & handsome. I am over the moon for the nn [name_u]Pip[/name_u] though. [name_u]Billie[/name_u] & [name_u]Pip[/name_u] are just :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:  There’s also the nn [name_u]Flip[/name_u], if you like that.

Foster-It doesn’t do much for me, but it’s not unpleasant. Could do the nn [name_u]Flip[/name_u] here too?

Morrison-Yeah, I love the nod to you dad! This is an interesting choice. [name_m]Morrie[/name_m] is kind of a sweet nn.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] my rambling helps.

[name_u]Jonah[/name_u] [name_u]Wolf[/name_u] - gentle but strong too

[name_u]Toby[/name_u] [name_m]Joshua[/name_m]- gorgeous and handsome

[name_u]Lenny[/name_u] and [name_m]Howie[/name_m] :heart_eyes::heart_eyes::heart_eyes::heart_eyes:

[name_f]My[/name_f] votes goes to either [name_u]Arthur[/name_u], [name_m]Lenard[/name_m] or [name_m]Morrison[/name_m] but I’m leaning more towards [name_m]Lenard[/name_m]! I really love [name_u]Lenny[/name_u] and it’s great that his Hebrew name would be what your husband wanted to name him in the first place! Plus it’s such a handsome name!

Such a great list. I particularly like Howes, [name_m]Lenard[/name_m], [name_m]Sylvan[/name_m], [name_u]Jonah[/name_u] [name_u]Wolf[/name_u], [name_u]Julien[/name_u] & [name_u]Brody[/name_u]. For you I really like Howes “Howie” [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] or [name_u]Jonah[/name_u] [name_u]Wolf[/name_u]

[name_m]Sylvan[/name_m] is gorgeous!

[name_f]My[/name_f] vote goes to either Howes [name_m]Joshua[/name_m], [name_m]Lenard[/name_m] [name_m]Joshua[/name_m], or [name_u]Jonah[/name_u] [name_u]Wolf[/name_u]. I think all of these choices (along with the Hebrew names) balance out the family honor names equally between you and your husband, and would be a good fit with [name_u]Billie[/name_u] in a sibset.

[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite is [name_u]Jonah[/name_u] [name_u]Wolf[/name_u]

I absolutely love [name_u]Jonah[/name_u] such a gorgeous name with this peaceful imagery attached which I think is lovely when thinking about your father being at peace. Along with the connection to your husbands Grandmother which is just so sweet. I also love the connection to your father through the middle name [name_u]Wolf[/name_u]. [name_u]Jonah[/name_u] [name_u]Wolf[/name_u] is so cool and I would go [name_u]Jay[/name_u] as a nickname for [name_u]Jonah[/name_u] I really like [name_u]Jay[/name_u] as a nickname. Finally I think [name_u]Billie[/name_u] & [name_u]Jonah[/name_u] are fabulous together!

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps :white_heart:

I like for you: [name_m]Morrison[/name_m], [name_m]Philip[/name_m] (PJ) and [name_u]Jonah[/name_u] :star_struck: (my favorite by far)

@ShaelaBananna this list is literally perfection!! I love all of these for you! I also love how significant these names are!!

[name_f]My[/name_f] top 3 are

[name_m]Sylvan[/name_m] [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] - I LOVE stav and I think [name_u]Van[/name_u] can be a nickname to nod to [name_u]Van[/name_u] [name_m]Morrison[/name_m] , which is also a nod to your dad . It’s a subtle way but it is important to you and a sweet way to honour but also giving him his own identity, I also Really love Billie/ Buzzy and [name_u]Van[/name_u] as a sibset

[name_u]Jonah[/name_u] [name_u]Wolf[/name_u] feels edgey and I am literally in love. Our little neighbour is named [name_u]Jonah[/name_u] and he gets nicknames [name_f]Joanie[/name_f] , [name_u]Jo[/name_u], [name_m]Jon[/name_m] , . I also think he could go by [name_u]Wolf[/name_u] …. [name_u]Billie[/name_u] and [name_m]Wolfe[/name_m] ! [name_m]Just[/name_m] darling🥰

Howes is not one that I would generally consider but I love that it honours your spouses grandmother as well as your dad. [name_m]Howie[/name_m] and [name_u]Billie[/name_u] are really cute !
