[name_u]Happy[/name_u] [name_u]New[/name_u] Year to everyone and thank you for participating in my little problem!
I’m sure many other people have thought of this before me, but I have always been conflicted about the youngest [name_u]March[/name_u] sister’s name. For those who don’t know, these four sisters from [name_m]Little[/name_m] Women are called [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] “Meg,” [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] “Jo,” [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] “Beth,” and [name_f]Amy[/name_f].
I am aware that Amy’s name was chosen because she is an anagram of [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f] Alcott’s sister, [name_f]May[/name_f]. As much as I like the name [name_f]Amy[/name_f] and think that it fits her spunky, artsy, stubborn, slightly vain yet still sweet personality, I can’t help but wish that she had a longer name with [name_f]Amy[/name_f] as a nickname, to match her sisters.
What would you name the fourth [name_u]March[/name_u] sister to give her a name that better matches her sisters? Would you scrap her name entirely and choose a new name and nickname, or would you keep [name_f]Amy[/name_f] as a nickname and give her a longer full name? [name_u]Or[/name_u], would you simply leave her name as [name_f]Amy[/name_f] and not change it at all?
[name_m]Feel[/name_m] free to share your thoughts on her name and the names of her sisters in general, as well as any comments you have about this exasperating but nevertheless beloved character.

I like [name_f]Amy[/name_f] with the set because it goes well with [name_f]Meg[/name_f], [name_u]Jo[/name_u], [name_f]Beth[/name_f], and [name_f]Amy[/name_f], but is a little out of place in the longer set!
if I was keeping [name_f]Amy[/name_f] as the nickname, I think I’d call her [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] 🪻
margaret, josephine, elizabeth, & amalia
if I were to rename her altogether I’d call her [name_f]Georgia[/name_f]
margaret, josephine, elizabeth, & georgia
meg, jo, beth, gia

I think I would go Amaryllis ‘Amy’
Margaret ‘Meg’, Josephine ‘Jo’, Elizabeth ‘Beth’ and Amaryllis ‘Amy’

i’d go with [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] ‘Amy’ to keep her name and [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] ‘Kate’ for something entirely different!

I love [name_f]Amy[/name_f] for the character and I think it fits her perfectly, but I agree as the only non nickname name it does stand out a bit - if not [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] ‘Amy’, I’d go for [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] ‘Kate’, [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] ‘Rose’ or [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] ‘Gwen’!

I think Amy’s name balances out since she’s the only one with a canonical middle name so its [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] "Meg, [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] “Jo”, [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] “Beth” and [name_f]Amy[/name_f] [name_u]Curtis[/name_u].
If I was to fully rename her I think I’d call her [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] “Dot” after [name_u]Lou[/name_u] Alcott’s grandmother (Marmee’s mother) [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] Sewall.

[name_f]My[/name_f] fave of the sisters
I kind of like that her name sets her apart a little and it suits her really well! Still, that ‘name-nerd’ side of me has always wished just a little that she had a ‘full-name+nickname’ name
I like that LMA’s sister sort of requested to be called [name_f]May[/name_f] (having had several other nicknames from her first name) and I feel like I can imagine [name_f]Amy[/name_f] doing something similar.
So…
[name_f]Alberta[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] → I imagine the clunky-ness wouldn’t appeal to her, but she’d also be a bIt put out by the fact she didn’t have a cool nickname like her sisters. Sure, there’s [name_m]Alby[/name_m] and [name_f]Berta[/name_f], [name_u]Alba[/name_u] maybe, but it’s not [name_f]Beth[/name_f] or [name_u]Jo[/name_u] or [name_f]Meg[/name_f], it doesn’t suit. As soon as she starts to be able to read/write, she spots ‘Amy’ could be made from Alberta Mary! She announces it and refuses to be referred to by anything else!
(plus, this would play on LMA’s sisters initials)
[name_f]Augusta[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] was my other thought - she hates everything about it
probably talks about how poorly chosen for her it was.

[name_f]Amelia[/name_f] “Amy” would definitely be my pick but if I were to try and come up with a non-Amy option maybe:
Harriet/Henrietta “Hattie”
Rosemary/Rosalie “Rosie”
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f] “Susie”
[name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] “Annie”
[name_f]Sarah[/name_f] “Sadie”
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] “Carrie”
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f] “Kitty”
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f] “Abbie”
[name_f]Pauline[/name_f] “Polly”
[name_f]Lucille[/name_f] “Lucy”

[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] (Evie) for changing it but [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] to keep it the same
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f], [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and Anna-Marie “Amy”

I think I’d go with [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] “Amy” but if I had to come up with something completely different…
[name_f]Catherine[/name_f] “Cate”
[name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] “Gwen”
[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] “Cilla”

I’ve never actually read the book or seen any media relating to [name_m]Little[/name_m] Women, so I always just assumed when I saw their names mentioned around it was [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] “Amy”
so that is what makes the most sense imo. Like others mentioned, if I was renaming her altogether I think [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] / [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] “Kate / Cate” fits best with older her sisters names

Oh wow, that is bothersome. I love [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] with the set, but [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Amy[/name_f] doesn’t sit right with me. [name_f]Amy[/name_f] has a long ‘a’ sound and [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] does not. So, never having read the book or have any connection with this character, I’m going to rename her!
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] ‘Meg’, [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] ‘Jo’, [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] ‘Beth’ & [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] ‘Kit’
I’d leave [name_f]Amy[/name_f]!
She’s based in Louisa’s youngest sister, who went by [name_f]May[/name_f], and [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] specifically chose “Amy” as an anagram of “May.”
Buuuut to play along… I think [name_f]Ambrosia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Amy[/name_f] would be pretty great. I also think that [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] nn [name_f]Kate[/name_f] (affectionately called [name_u]Kitty[/name_u] by [name_u]Jo[/name_u], I think!) or [name_u]Florence[/name_u] nn [name_f]Flossie[/name_f] would suit her great.
Maybe [name_f]Amadea[/name_f] ‘Amy’ or [name_f]Adamina[/name_f] ‘Amy’ to keep [name_f]Amy[/name_f].
Some other ideas are [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] ‘Nell’, [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] ‘Kate’, [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] ‘Lottie’ or [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] ‘Ginny’.
[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite is [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] ‘Nell’: [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] ‘Meg’, [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] ‘Jo’, [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] ‘Beth’ and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] ‘Nell’.
I’d probably do [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] “Amy”, but picking something else to go with [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] “Meg”, [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] “Jo” and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] “Beth”, I’d have to go with [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] “Gwen”!
@snowmaiden I also love [name_f]Amy[/name_f] for her, and [name_f]Ambrosia[/name_f] is s lovely suggestion! Otherwise, [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] “Kate/Kitty” and [name_u]Florence[/name_u] “Flossie,” are perfect!! (Although, maybe [name_u]Florence[/name_u] just sits right with my because it’s the name of the actress who plays her…)
@Johannaa [name_f]Amadea[/name_f] is beautiful, and I also love your ideas of [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] “Nell,” and [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] “Ginny.”
@lilyofthevale [name_f]Gwen[/name_f] is perfection
Oh that’s a fair point
I always think of little [name_f]Kirsten[/name_f] Dunst as [name_f]Amy[/name_f] too, and I think she’d make just as good a [name_f]Flossie[/name_f]! And book [name_f]Amy[/name_f]. Totally works!!
