The importance of being Ernest

A little while ago I saw a series that had an [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] as one of the main characters and I found myself constantly thinking of that name since. I’ve never thought much of it, but now I feel like it’s growing on me. I find it charming and elegant, but still strong and full of substance, all while keeping a down to earth, simple and soft appeal.
That said, I do worry that it’s not ready for a comeback and should just remain a dusty grandpa name. Nicknames don’t usually bother me much, but I absolutely hate [name_m]Ernie[/name_m] too.
So I find myself wondering: is it vintage and charming, like a gentleman tipping his hat at passers-by? Is it buttoned-down and propper, like a professional nerdy boy wearing glasses? Or is it just bland, boring and old, like a grouchy old man?

So, in short, what are your thoughts on [name_m]Ernest[/name_m]? Imagery, combos, nicknames and everything you can say about the name are welcome. [name_f]TIA[/name_f]!

I used to hate it and find it ugly, but it’s growing on me. I’m still rather indifferent to it, though. I can say that I would love to meet a little [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] instead of another [name_u]Jayden[/name_u].

I feel like the name has the qualities that you mentioned- charming, strong, simple, and so on- but the thing that totally ruins it for me is the nn [name_m]Ernie[/name_m]. [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] makes me picture a sweet, honest, charming man full of warmth and integrity. [name_m]Ernie[/name_m] makes me think of the orange Muppet with the hissing laugh and rubber ducky. I’d bet money on people giving him that nickname, too :frowning: since you don’t like [name_m]Ernie[/name_m] either, I’d suggest using [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] as a middle. It’s a shame

random, but I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] Edelweiss from your GP list! Such an interesting choice, but beautiful

Thanks! Seems we’re on the same boat with this name. It’s really a shame I hate [name_m]Ernie[/name_m] so much, considering [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] has so many good connotations, namesakes and connectios. And thanks for Edelweiss! I don’t think I’d ever use it (far too out there for me), but it has such a lovely, sweet sound I can’t simply ignore it. It’d make a fab cat name though, right?

I looooove [name_m]Ernest[/name_m]
But I’m probably biased, since there’s an [name_m]Ernst[/name_m] in a musical I really enjoy
Still, I think its so elegant!
If you dont like nickname [name_m]Ernie[/name_m] establish another one like Ent, Nest, [name_f]Eri[/name_f]

I’ve always found [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] to carry real sophistication and elegance. I think it has a sweetness and serious edge which I really love. But I think in all honesty I would struggle to use it because so many people only see it as an old man’s name and I also really don’t like [name_m]Ernie[/name_m]. I don’t think I could pick a name which has abbreviations I dislike this much. Or I would have to establish a different nn like [name_u]Ren[/name_u], which is actually pretty cool!

I don’t think it’s ready for a comeback yet. It reads old man to me.

[name_m]How[/name_m] is everything with you, I really want to tell you a little about me and if it will interest you know me i will like you to contact me back on (joyceadam2016@yahoo.com) because it is urgent and very important So that we can get to know each other better and i will send you more of my pictures for good start of friendship (joyceadam2016@yahoo.com) [name_u]Joyce[/name_u]

So far most people seem to like it, despite the (quite terrible) nickname. Any more thoughts, berries?

I like it. To be honest, I also like [name_m]Ernie[/name_m] and think it’d be pretty cute on a boy. But I also think you could easily get away with no nickname - [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] isn’t exactly a mouthful. I think an alternate nickname is a bit of a stretch though.

I love [name_m]Ernest[/name_m]!!! I will be jealous when I meet a baby [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] because I can’t get hubby on board.

I started liking the name after reading The Importance of Being [name_m]Earnest[/name_m] and seeing the movie. I like to imagine an [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] being a lot like Mr [name_u]Darcy[/name_u]

I want to add that I also really dislike [name_m]Ernie[/name_m].

I like [name_m]Ernest[/name_m], and I would consider nickname Ted.

I love [name_m]Ernest[/name_m]. I mean, it’s the center of an entire play about name nerdiness, how could I not? It also happens to be a family surname for me, so that’s another point in its favor.

I personally don’t mind [name_m]Ernie[/name_m], but I can see how others do. My solution would be to give him a nickname that has nothing to do with the [name_m]Ernest[/name_m], like the [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] from [name_m]New[/name_m] Girl who goes by Coach.

I love [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] and [name_m]Ernst[/name_m] too.

My youngest nephew (just turned three) is called [name_u]Hudson[/name_u] [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] ([name_m]Ernest[/name_m] for one grandfather and [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] for another).

I think it is a classic name!

I understand your qualms about [name_m]Ernie[/name_m]. I actually think [name_m]Ernie[/name_m] is cute, but certainly wouldn’t want that nn to last for a lifetime. It’s what made me shy away from [name_m]Charles[/name_m] ([name_m]CHUCK[/name_m]!) and [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] ([name_m]NATE[/name_m]!).

You have to decide if the nn possibility is a deal-breaker for you or not. For what’s it worth, I’ve taught for 30 years and in the last 15 years or so, boys come to me named, not with any nicknames and folks seem to go for that OK.

[name_u]Leslie[/name_u]

Thanks for all the input so far! I’m seriously considering it right now (as serious as considering can be when you are as far away as possible from concieving anyway)
Now, can you think of any combos? I’ve only come up with [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] [name_m]Ernest[/name_m]/[name_m]Ernest[/name_m] [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] so far. Any ideas?

I would love this name, but [name_m]Ernie[/name_m] is so horrible, and realistically, not easy to avoid.

[name_m]Ernest[/name_m] has really been growing on me recently, and I too don’t like the nn [name_m]Ernie[/name_m]…If I was to nickname it, I’d go with [name_m]Ernst[/name_m], Nes or [name_m]Nestor[/name_m], or get a nn derived from both the first and middle names

Combos:
[name_m]Ernest[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] ‘EJ’
[name_m]Ernest[/name_m] [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] ‘Nex’
[name_m]Ernest[/name_m] [name_m]Damien[/name_m] ‘[name_m]Ed[/name_m]’ or ‘[name_m]Ned[/name_m]’
[name_m]Ernest[/name_m] [name_m]Donovan[/name_m] ‘[name_m]Ed[/name_m],’ ‘[name_m]Ned[/name_m]’ or ‘[name_u]Evan[/name_u]’
[name_m]Ernest[/name_m] [name_m]Charles[/name_m]
[name_m]Ernest[/name_m] [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] ‘[name_u]Nat[/name_u],’ ‘Ert’
[name_m]Ernest[/name_m] [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m]

[name_m]Fabian[/name_m] [name_m]Ernest[/name_m]
[name_m]Daniel[/name_m] [name_m]Ernest[/name_m]
[name_m]Zachary[/name_m] [name_m]Ernest[/name_m]
[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] [name_m]Ernest[/name_m]
[name_u]Elliott[/name_u] [name_m]Ernest[/name_m]
[name_m]Joshua[/name_m] [name_m]Ernest[/name_m]
[name_m]Desmond[/name_m] [name_m]Ernest[/name_m]
[name_u]Keegan[/name_u] [name_m]Ernest[/name_m]

[name_m]Ernest[/name_m] is a charming, sophisticated, elegant name. It makes me think of an early 20th century gentleman, with top hat and cigar, wearing a tweed suit. I can’t see it making a comeback as in becoming popular anytime soon, but I think it’s definitely usable and not too outdated at all.

I hate the nickname [name_m]Ernie[/name_m] too but given that it doesn’t exactly have a fashionable sound and (as evidenced by this thread) a lot of people don’t like it, I don’t think it would come up much. Maybe more with the older generation, but kids his age won’t go automatically go from [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] to [name_m]Ernie[/name_m] the way they’d go from [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] to [name_m]Ben[/name_m] since it’s not really a name they’d hear and have the association with it already. [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] is only two syllables so he may well not have any nickname at all.
