[name_m]Hi[/name_m] fellow Berries!
Wondering how you pronounce names that end in -ine. For me it really depends. I pronounce [name_f]Coraline[/name_f], [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], and [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] like -line, but I pronounce [name_f]Ottoline[/name_f], [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], and [name_f]Geraldine[/name_f] -een, while I pronounce [name_f]Jessamine[/name_f] and [name_f]Corinne[/name_f] -in.
This came up because my friend and I were disputing the pronunciation of [name_f]Jessamine[/name_f]. I said [name_u]JESS[/name_u]-uh-min; she said [name_u]JESS[/name_u]-uh-meen. [name_m]Just[/name_m] want to know if you guys have “rules” for this sort of ending…
I’m the same for the most part.
- [name_f]Line[/name_f] Endings:
[name_f]Adeline[/name_f], [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], [name_f]Coraline[/name_f], [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]*
*I’m fine with either for [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], but in The [name_u]Blue[/name_u] Lagoon, its -line and since that’s what inspired me I continue to mostly pronounce it that way.
-
Leen Endings:
[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], [name_f]Ottoline[/name_f], [name_f]Francine[/name_f], [name_f]Geraldine[/name_f].
-
In Endings:
[name_f]Jessamine[/name_f], [name_f]Corrine[/name_f]*
*For me, I think [name_f]Corinne[/name_f] is a pretty easy one and I know someone with the last
name [name_f]Jessamine[/name_f], so it’s always pronounced -min.
I don’t really have a rule per se, but I mainly pronounce them in the most common way I hear, if everybody is pronouncing it -leen then I probably will too. With the exception of [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]. In the real world though, it’s a bit more complicated as where I live most people pronounce things phonetically, so -line (except for [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Angeline[/name_f]) is typically how things are pronounced. They’d pronounce it properly if corrected them, but most seem quite phonetic.
