THE list....please share opinions!

We’re still all over the map on naming baby #2. What are your honest thoughts, associations, do’s/don’ts for these? We’re just outside of [name_m]Boston[/name_m] and I’ve worked in education for over a decade, and feel overly skewed when it comes to a fresh perspective.

[name_u]Emery[/name_u] - I love this but honestly am over- [name_f]Emily[/name_f]'d and it feels too close.

[name_f]Eliana[/name_f] - love [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], but again, they seem peppered all over the place with all the Ellas and Stellas and Emmas.

[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] - classic, not as used as [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] or [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] these days, but not a fan of most of the nicknames like [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], [name_f]Meg[/name_f], [name_f]Peggy[/name_f], [name_f]Marge[/name_f]

[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] - husband likes this but again, I know several and not a fan of using any of the nn - lex, lexi, alex

[name_f]Esme[/name_f] - I only know one and her parents are very cool, hipster city folks. I have no grasp on this name other than that one association…my husband and I are more outdoorsy, preppy, culture/city appreciating, but not that cool

[name_f]Nora[/name_f] - love but can’t use bc cousin/bff just used for her daughter in [name_u]June[/name_u]

[name_f]Cecily[/name_f] - love but our daughter’s nn is [name_f]Vivi[/name_f], and I’m not a fan of the sibset [name_f]Vivi[/name_f] and [name_f]Cece[/name_f]

[name_f]Violet[/name_f] or [name_f]Vera[/name_f] - I love these but husband isn’t a fan of two girls with V names.

So stuck - ideas?!
Names we’ve eliminated for one reason or another: [name_f]Lydia[/name_f], [name_u]Eloise[/name_u], [name_f]Annabel[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f]. All names with long e endings won’t work with our last name, and nothing that starts with a P.
Thanks for any and all thoughts!!!

Nicknames for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]:

[name_f]Margo[/name_f]
[name_f]Mari[/name_f]/[name_f]Mary[/name_f]/[name_f]Marie[/name_f]
[name_f]Molly[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f]
[name_f]Margalo[/name_f]
[name_f]Retta[/name_f]

I like [name_f]Violet[/name_f], and love [name_f]Esme[/name_f]. I think the meaning for [name_f]Esme[/name_f] and the sound of it is beautiful.

[name_f]Cora[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Nora[/name_f]? [name_f]Annalie[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Annabel[/name_f]? [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Lydia[/name_f]? [name_f]Carys[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Clara[/name_f]?

Others:
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Thessaly[/name_f]
[name_f]Celeste[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Elise[/name_f]

My favorites are [name_u]Emery[/name_u], [name_f]Esme[/name_f] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f]

I’m guessing your other daugthers name is somthing along the lines of [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f], [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] or [name_f]Vivianna[/name_f]? and with her sisters name I think [name_f]Esme[/name_f] fits best

Other Suggestions

  • [name_f]Veda[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Cora[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Alice[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
  • [name_u]Ellery[/name_u]

Of your list is seems that you have eliminated all but [name_f]Esme[/name_f] and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f].

Firstly, you don’t have to be cool to name your kid [name_f]Esme[/name_f] - The Twilight series made this name mainstream  If you like this name go for it!

[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] - I agree, this is an underused classic. I think it’s a strong name but I agree, the nick names you’ve listed do suck. [name_m]How[/name_m] do you feel about [name_f]Greta[/name_f]? I personally love the old Hollywood vibe it gives this sturdy name.

Here are some combos using your names…

[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Esme[/name_f]
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_u]Emery[/name_u]
[name_f]Esme[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Esme[/name_f] [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]

I really like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] with [name_u]Vivian[/name_u]. They are both classic but not overly used. I have a friend who is a [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] but she goes by her first and middle initial MJ. Also I have heard the name [name_f]MAISIE[/name_f] as a nickname

What about [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]? It’s a classic and it isn’t as popular as [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Emma[/name_f], shares sounds with [name_f]Eliana[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_f]Esme[/name_f].

I think that [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] is a softer name than [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]/[name_f]Cecelia[/name_f] which is what [name_f]Cece[/name_f] is usually a nickname for. Meaning that it’s very easy to say [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] as a two-syllable name. I think that using [name_f]Cece[/name_f] for [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] would be like using [name_f]Leelee[/name_f] for [name_u]Leslie[/name_u]. I just wouldn’t use it.

What about [name_f]Celia[/name_f]? That’s a very pretty name.

Suggestions:
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
[name_f]Celia[/name_f]
[name_f]Cora[/name_f]
[name_f]Juliet[/name_f]
[name_f]Juliana[/name_f]
[name_f]Ada[/name_f]
[name_f]Francesca[/name_f] (I like the nn [name_f]Fay[/name_f])
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Sabrina[/name_f]
[name_f]Florence[/name_f]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]

[name_u]Emery[/name_u]: it’s OK but would be constantly confused with [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. I like [name_f]Emer[/name_f] but then you’d have the same problem wth [name_f]Emma[/name_f]. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]?

[name_f]Eliana[/name_f]: this is my least favourite from your list. It just sounds like so many other popular names right now with its [name_f]El[/name_f]- beginning, its -ana ending and its very girly feel. I prefer just [name_f]Ella[/name_f], or the less popular [name_f]Ellen[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] or [name_f]Helena[/name_f].

[name_f]Margaret[/name_f]: gorgeous name and so underused! If you don’t like any of those nns, how about [name_f]Margot[/name_f] or [name_f]Greta[/name_f]? They seem more in-keeping with your classic-but-not-too-popular style. This is my favourite from your list.

[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]: I like it but also not a fan of [name_u]Alex[/name_u], [name_u]Lexi[/name_u], etc. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Alexa[/name_f] or [name_f]Alexia[/name_f], which might be short enough not to need a nn? Or [name_f]Alessandra[/name_f]/[name_f]Alessia[/name_f], or even [name_f]Allegra[/name_f]?

[name_f]Esme[/name_f]: lovely name, but increasingly popular/trendy. There’s an [name_f]Esmee[/name_f] in the Twilight series of books, which I don’t think has helped. Similar but less popular: [name_f]Emme[/name_f], [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], [name_f]Ismay[/name_f], [name_f]Esther[/name_f]/[name_f]Estee[/name_f].

[name_f]Nora[/name_f]: gorgeous, such a shame it’s taken. There’s always [name_f]Cora[/name_f], [name_f]Dora[/name_f], [name_f]Laura[/name_f], [name_f]Zora[/name_f], etc. but tbh I think they’re a bit close too. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Orla[/name_f], [name_f]Gaia[/name_f], [name_f]Maia[/name_f], [name_f]Thea[/name_f], [name_f]Pippa[/name_f], [name_f]Eva[/name_f] or [name_f]Isla[/name_f]?

[name_f]Cecily[/name_f]: I really like this. I don’t like [name_f]Vivi[/name_f] and [name_f]Cece[/name_f], but would you have to use a nn?

[name_f]Violet[/name_f] or [name_f]Vera[/name_f]: love both, but I have to agree with your husband about using two V names. It’s not a common letter, so it looks deliberate. Either would make a lovely mn though.

My favourite with big sister [name_f]Vivi[/name_f] is [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] nn [name_f]Greta[/name_f]. I like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_u]Emery[/name_u], [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Vera[/name_f], [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Cecily[/name_f], [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Esme[/name_f] or [name_f]Ismay[/name_f].

I guess we are assuming big sister is [name_u]Vivian[/name_u], so [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is a great fit. The old fashioned nn for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] (re [name_m]Little[/name_m] Women by [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] M. [name_u]Alcott[/name_u]) ([name_f]Daisy[/name_f] is [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] junior, daughter of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] nn [name_f]Meg[/name_f])

For outside of [name_m]Boston[/name_m], the [name_m]Little[/name_m] Women theme is perfect because their home is in [name_u]Concord[/name_u] MA. The second sister is [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], called [name_u]Jo[/name_u]. [name_f]Josey[/name_f] is currently popular.

I believe [name_f]Esme[/name_f] is the nn for [name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f], a character in [name_m]Victor[/name_m] [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]'s Hunchback of Notre Dame. Classic literature is a great source for further name exploration.

I like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. Is this [name_f]Queen[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]'s sister? [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Esme[/name_f] gives her the option of just using her middle name if she chooses to become trendy as a teen.

[name_u]Emery[/name_u]- I might be biased because this is my name (only I spell it Emiree) but I love it. I get nothing but compliments on it.
[name_f]Eliana[/name_f]- I can’t say I’m a fan of this one.
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f]- I’ve never liked this name.
[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]- I love it. It’s classic.
[name_f]Esme[/name_f]- too twilight-y.
[name_f]Cecily[/name_f]- I like it. But I prefer [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f].
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]- I love love [name_f]Violet[/name_f].

Another nn idea for [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] is [name_u]Andy[/name_u].
I think that [name_f]Esme[/name_f] seems like the name you like the most and I think it would go very well with what I assume your daughter’s name is.
Good luck!
