The Long List

I struggle way more with girl names than I do boy names. If I had a boy I know his name would be Jasper, and were I to have a couple more they’d be probably be Hugo and Malcolm. With girls there are just too many I like, but not really any I can say without a doubt it’s the name. So below is my long list. Please help me shorten it. Tell me if there are any names on it that just don’t go at all. Kay or some variant of Katherine (but not Katherine exactly) has to be in there. I’d prefer to have Rose in there too, but it’s not necessary. I already have 3 kids; Benton Grover, Arwen Elizabeth and Raven Azalea Ann. Our last name sounds like “mantis” without the T. Which one is your favorite with Benton, Arwen, Raven, Jasper, Hugo and Malcolm?

  • Alice Mikayla Belle
  • Cleo Dorothea Kate
  • Cora Felicity Kay
  • Emerald Saoirse Kate
  • Lilou Akacia Bea
  • Maple Dorothea Kate
  • Nola Felicity Kay
  • Olive Penelope Kate
  • Rose Dorothea Kate
  • Rosemary Saoirse Kate
  • Saoirse Rosemary Kate
  • Sylva Rosemary Kate
  • Truly Mikayla Rose

I think [name_u]Cleo[/name_u] is a great match! It’s familiar but interesting and a bit unexpected, like your other children’s names! I also think [name_u]Raven[/name_u], [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] & [name_u]Cleo[/name_u] sound super cool together as sisters - 3 girl names with a powerful, slightly witchy vibe next to one another!

Of your list, I’d narrow it down to:

[name_f]Sylva[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f]
[name_u]Cleo[/name_u] [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f]
[name_f]Cora[/name_f] [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_u]Kay[/name_u]
[name_f]Emerald[/name_f] [name_f]Saoirse[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f]
[name_f]Maple[/name_f] [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f]
[name_f]Olive[/name_f] [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f]

I think the others do work, though [name_f]Alice[/name_f] feels slightly out of place to me

@tallemaja I agree on [name_u]Cleo[/name_u] fitting great with [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] and [name_u]Raven[/name_u]. Plus it’s been on my favorites list for over a decade. The only one that’s been on my list longer is [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. I would have used [name_u]Cleo[/name_u] for [name_f]Arwen[/name_f], but my husband vetoed it. It’s still not his favorite, but he doesn’t totally hate it. That’s the only thing that gives me pause. I know he’s not totally onboard with it, but he’s also given me free range to name the next kids whatever I want. Thanks for your input!

@Greyblue I go back and forth on [name_f]Alice[/name_f] because she’s so classic and more popular than I’d like. However, [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] (10yo) was almost [name_f]Alice[/name_f], so I’ve loved it for a long time. It does have the whimsical fairytale feel from Wonderland, so I try to convince myself it’s not that out of place, but I tend to agree with you. I think [name_f]Sylva[/name_f] and [name_u]Cleo[/name_u] are at the top of my list too. Thanks!

I think [name_u]Cleo[/name_u], [name_f]Sylva[/name_f], [name_f]Maple[/name_f], and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] are my favorites with your set. To me they all have the slightly fairytale, slightly naturey vibe the others share.
[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] deserves some love, too; it’s on our list. [name_f]Emerald[/name_f] works; [name_f]Nola[/name_f], [name_f]Cora[/name_f] and [name_f]Saoirse[/name_f] are fine. I’m not a huge fan of [name_f]Olive[/name_f], but it works fine. Part of me really likes [name_u]Truly[/name_u], and part can only hear the “Truly Scrumptious” song from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang sorry :grimacing: [name_f]Lilou[/name_f] maybe sticks out the most to me as not fitting particularly well. I don’t like spelling [name_f]Akacia[/name_f] when a K, either, but it is a clever [name_u]Kay[/name_u] tribute.

Did [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_f]Elanor[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f] fall off the list? I liked that one. We’re seriously considering [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] since our kids are telling everyone it’s what they want to name the baby  And I was looking at [name_u]Sam[/name_u] Gamgee’s family tree, at the names of his other daughters, and [name_f]Elanor[/name_f] (which we used) was the first girl–and [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] was the last. Maybe it’s a sign!

Ruby’s popularity had me questioning it. Plus I know (not well) 2 Rubys. I realize [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is right there with [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] in popularity, but the only [name_f]Alice[/name_f] I know is in her 80s, not a child. That makes it easier for me to use. Although, I’m still not a fan of it being that popular either. Also, if I were to pick another R name with [name_u]Raven[/name_u], I think it would be [name_f]Rose[/name_f] over [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]. [name_f]Rose[/name_f] has been a favorite of mine since I was about 5. I think [name_u]Cleo[/name_u] and [name_f]Sylva[/name_f] are at the top of my list for now. Thanks for your input!

I hear you on Ruby’s popularity. I’m over here like, Deliverance’s name was literally not on the SSA list the year she was born, not even 5 babies, and [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] is at #62 (bites nails)
I also know 2. One is elderly, one’s a little girl. Popularity really shouldn’t matter if it’s The Name, but get into Top 10 territory and I hear the names often enough to start getting bored.

Interestingly, I know more Rosemarys than Rubys (Alices, too.) Depends on where you are, I guess.

Benton Grover, Arwen Elizabeth, Raven Azalea Ann; Jasper, Hugo; Malcolm and:

Sylva Rosemary Kate  Gorgeous!!! I prefer Sylvia, but still stunning!

I also like:

Alice Mikayla Belle - I don’t love Mikayla, but it’s such a pretty combo! In my opinion it goes great. And names don’t have to be matchy anyway.

Cleo Dorothea Kate - how lovely is that! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: Would perhaps prefer Chloe or Clodia over Cleo… But maybe not. Cleo really matches the sibset :sparkles:

Cora Felicity Kay - I definitely prefer Kate, but lovelove! Especially loving Felicity😍 Kay really flow nicely tho.

Rosemary Saoirse Kate - Swooon  I think Saoirse really ties it with her sister’s names, similar magical mystical energy :sparkles::blush: Edited: wasn’t Rosemary also a character in Lord of the Rings? Hmmm… Edited: Nope, it was Goldberry! Sorry!:blush:

[name_m]Samwise[/name_m] Gamgee married [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] [name_m]Cotton[/name_m] and of course there’s [name_m]Meriadoc[/name_m] “Merry” Brandybuck, but no [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] specifically that I’m aware of. However, it does feel very hobbit like to me since the women often had flower/herb names. Plus my husband’s great grandmother was [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] and my grandmother was [name_f]Mary[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Sylva[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f] is at the top of my list currently too, but [name_u]Cleo[/name_u] is close on it’s heels. Thanks for your comments!
