The Most Divisive Baby Names

Did you all see the story about the “Marmite [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Names” – the baby names that cause the most divisive reactions? Oscar, Chloe, Lola and Felix voted the UK’s most divisive baby names

We’d like to write about this with a uniquely Nameberry spin. What names do you think are most divisive – cause the strongest reactions positive AND negative – on Nameberry and in real life!!

Names I’ve seen get mixed reactions on…

[name_m]Casper[/name_m]-I think it’s very handsome but a lot of people think ghost
[name_m]Cohen[/name_m]
[name_u]Bellamy[/name_u] for a boy
[name_m]Milo[/name_m]-dog name?

[name_f]Etta[/name_f]-incomplete or good on its own?
[name_f]India[/name_f]-offensive?
[name_f]Lilith[/name_f]-feminist or sacreligious?
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]-maggot?
[name_f]Noa[/name_f]-trendy girl version of [name_u]Noah[/name_u]?
[name_f]Liv[/name_f]-incomplete?
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]-too dark?

@kipperbo1 Those are fantastic suggestions. I was thinking of [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] too, which to many people is just a more unusual [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] alternative, but to others (me) it’s a tragic heroine.

Another one I was thinking of was [name_u]Hunter[/name_u], which to some is a Waspy surname name and to others is a literal [name_u]Hunter[/name_u] tramping through the woods with a gun.

For an individual name, I’d say that [name_m]Cohen[/name_m] is very decisive. Some may see it as just another surname-name, while some don’t like it because of what it means to Jews.

For a name trend, it’s got to be boy’s names on girls. Some like the gender-bending while others don’t like how it rarely goes the other way (e.g. “[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t name a girl [name_u]James[/name_u] if you wouldn’t name a boy [name_f]Jane[/name_f]”). By the way, I noticed it’s rare that you see someone saying they’d like to use the same name whether it’s a boy or a girl (which is what someone who truly likes gender neutrality without a preference towards one gender or the other would likely do).

With the whole rise in popularity of vintage names, I have found [name_f]Maude[/name_f] to be the most polarising. No one seems neutral on this name!

I found uber-cute names to be highly polarizing - [name_f]Minnie[/name_f], [name_f]Pixie[/name_f], [name_f]Honey[/name_f], [name_f]Dolly[/name_f], etc., which surprises me because with the rise of vintage names again and [name_f]Dolly[/name_f] and [name_f]Minnie[/name_f] once being popular choices from the turn of the century.

@namefan [name_m]Cohen[/name_m] and [name_u]James[/name_u] are perfect. Thank you.

@leafsgirl44 Good ones – do you think that’s because some people find them cool and full of attitude and other people think they diminish girls?

@bonhomieconsomie So interesting. It’s true, some people think it’s terminally old-fashioned and ugly and others see it as cute and ready for a comeback. Why do you think that is? Is [name_f]Maude[/name_f] the coriander of names?

[name_f]Greer[/name_f], [name_u]Sloane[/name_u], and [name_f]Moira[/name_f]! I feel like people here either love/like or hate them. Complaints have to do with the sound. [name_f]Moira[/name_f] reminds people of “moist” (a word that doesn’t bother me so I quite like [name_f]Moira[/name_f]), [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] reminds people of “moan” or “groan” (sort of bothers me but [name_m]Ferris[/name_m] [name_m]Bueller[/name_m] helps so I’m on the like side of this), and [name_f]Greer[/name_f] reminds people of “eerie” or “gross” (or at least that’s what it reminds me of).

Back with some more suggestions partially inspired by PPs.

[name_m]Gunnar[/name_m]/[name_m]Gunner[/name_m]

[name_m]Killian[/name_m]-some people just hear kill, however I consider it a cute name with a nice meaning: church

[name_u]Aspen[/name_u]-cute nature name or “ass pen”

[name_f]Violet[/name_f]-a lot of people think violent

Nicknames as full names - things like [name_u]Romy[/name_u], [name_f]Libby[/name_f], [name_f]Effie[/name_f], [name_f]Lulu[/name_f], [name_u]Lou[/name_u], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] and [name_f]Evie[/name_f]. In the UK, these names pass really easily as nicknames as full names is a well established thing here, whereas I’ve noticed on nameberry, you can often get comments saying they’re incomplete!

Bold word choices like [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f], [name_u]Poet[/name_u], [name_u]Winter[/name_u] and [name_f]Lark[/name_f] - either people love them or hate them!

Alternatively, I’ve found popular and familiar nameberry faves are often met with confusion, surprise and dislike in real life. [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], [name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_m]Atticus[/name_m], [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m], [name_u]Pax[/name_u], [name_f]Ada[/name_f], [name_f]Thea[/name_f], [name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f], [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] all seem like acceptable, familiar choices to me but have caused surprise and questions in real life.

I believe some find them cool and full of attitude or unique vintage nod, and others think they’re too cute to be wearable. I’m more in the “unique vintage” camp, but I’ve gotten more than enough feedback in the past that shows a strong attitude against those names.

[name_f]Nora[/name_f] or [name_f]Nova[/name_f]
Some people think they’re really cute, but I think it sounds somewhat masculine and I’ve seen other negative responses to it too
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
Cute or silly?

Personally, I think super popular names tend to be polarizing! It’s interesting to me, because of how different qualities in a name are important to different people. A name can be so popular that, even if I like how it sounds, I would never use it. I used to love [name_u]Owen[/name_u] and [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m], but after their rise in popularity I could never actually use them. Especially with all of the unique names and combinations by nameberry users, I bet a lot of them would agree!

I could see how [name_f]Luna[/name_f] could be polarizing! It has a lot of elements that make it attainable or recognizable - 2 syllable, L-name ending in -a all makes it very familiar, but the meaning might be too theme-y or make too many people think of [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]! I did hear that it started rising in popularity after HP introduced [name_f]Luna[/name_f] Lovegood, after all!
