The name Captain for a boy??

with choices like [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] and [name_u]Sailor[/name_u], [name_m]Rider[/name_m], etc… becoming more and more popular, what are your opinions on the name [name_m]Captain[/name_m]? I love it. My husband doesn’t like it so much.

I love [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] and [name_u]Sailor[/name_u], though [name_m]Rider[/name_m] annoys me deeply.

I even like [name_m]Captain[/name_m] and [name_m]Skipper[/name_m] and [name_f]Cricket[/name_f]. Heck, I like Chief too and [name_m]Baron[/name_m] and [name_m]Laird[/name_m].

But like is one thing and naming a person that name is another.

[name_m]Caspian[/name_m] is the only one of these I would name a child, but the rest could make fun nicknames?

No. It’s a horrible idea, in my opinion. I’m with your hubby on this one.

Too much teasing potential there for me. I also can imagine that as an adult people would not take him seriously :frowning:

I had a friend with a brother called [name_m]Captain[/name_m] nn “[name_m]Cap[/name_m]”. It was actually his middle name but everyone called him “[name_m]Cap[/name_m]”. I personally dislike it as a first name but I think it would make a cool middle name.

Agreed it should definitely not be a middle name. [name_f]Imagine[/name_f] him early in his career, on the low rungs of the corporate ladder, being called [name_m]Captain[/name_m]. Everybody would mock him.

No. [name_m]Captain[/name_m] [last name] sounds jokey. Plus [name_m]Captain[/name_m] is used a lot in sarcastic phrases like “[name_m]Captain[/name_m] Obvious.”

No, I do not think [name_m]Captain[/name_m] should be used as a name, first or middle name. [name_m]Captain[/name_m] is a ranking in many careers. To me it would be like using the name [name_m]Doctor[/name_m] on someone that is not a doctor.

I think it’s a fine name… for a dog.

I don’t like [name_m]Captain[/name_m]. If you love it, I would use it in the middle. [name_m]How[/name_m] would you feel about using [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] or [name_m]Casper[/name_m] and then nicknaming him [name_m]Cap[/name_m]?

If I recall correctly, in some countries with naming laws, it’s actually against the law to use names that are titles (such as [name_m]King[/name_m], [name_m]Duke[/name_m], [name_m]Major[/name_m], [name_m]Captain[/name_m], etc) as first names.

I think it’s a cute nickname, but as a first name I think it’s ridiculous. Would you name him [name_m]Doctor[/name_m] or Lieutenant?

But then I think [name_u]Sailor[/name_u] and [name_m]Rider[/name_m] are kinda crazy too. I find it hard to get behind most of the occupational names.

No. [name_m]Just[/name_m] no.

Personally, I don’t like titles for first names ([name_m]Captain[/name_m], [name_m]Duke[/name_m], Messsiah, [name_f]Princess[/name_f], [name_m]King[/name_m] etc…). I realize that parents want their children to do well in life but they don’t have to broadcast their lofty aspirations every time they call their children in the playground. Sorry but I’m on your hubby’s side on this question.

What about [name_m]Commodore[/name_m] instead? I only know one person with that (middle) name, but he likes it. I also know a [name_m]Cap[/name_m], which is a nice name too.

It’s a no for me. My hubs is in a job with positions of [name_m]Captain[/name_m]. I can’t imagine [name_m]Captain[/name_m] [name_m]Captain[/name_m]. Gotta say, when NB (which is usually open to avant garde names) resoundingly says no to a name (and of course your DH too), then it is time to look for another name.
