[name_f]My[/name_f] husband’s name is [name_u]Barry[/name_u]. He was named after his dad. I do not love the name [name_u]Barry[/name_u] at all and will not be having a third. I do want to pay tribute to the name. I read that [name_u]Barry[/name_u] came from the name [name_m]Finbarr[/name_m]. Would the name [name_u]Finn[/name_u] be an appropriate alternative while still honoring my husband and his father?
Why not name the baby [name_m]Finbarr[/name_m], then nickname [name_u]Finn[/name_u]? It’s a cool name!
Personally I think Finbar/Finbarr isn’t really a useable name, but Finn or Finley/Finlay would be a reasonable alternative although not outwardly obvious.
Barry apparently means spear. I searched other names that mean spear and came up with Cain so perhaps use the alternate spelling Kane to avoid any negative biblical connotations?
It’s a stretch that you’d have to explain if people ever asked how the names are connected, but… all that really matters is your husband thinks it’s close enough.
Personally I love [name_u]Finn[/name_u].
I think it would totally work. [name_u]Finn[/name_u] is such a lovely name.
I love [name_u]Finn[/name_u] too!! You could totally do that. But what about [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] [name_u]Barry[/name_u] to carry on the exact namesake of his father & grandfather? Or [name_u]Finn[/name_u] [name_u]Barry[/name_u] with maybe a 2nd middle name to add balance, perhaps the name of his maternal grandfather too? [name_m]Just[/name_m] an idea… I think [name_u]Finn[/name_u] is a very handsome choice!
I would use [name_m]Finbar[/name_m]/[name_m]Finbarr[/name_m] as it makes the [name_u]Barry[/name_u] connection more obvious.
Also [name_m]Finbar[/name_m] is a seriously cool name and you can use [name_u]Finn[/name_u] for short!
Thanks for the input & suggestions everyone. I think some variation of [name_u]Finn[/name_u] will definitely be used for our baby boy!
I heard a mother in the shops the other day calling out ‘[name_m]Finbarr[/name_m]’ to her toddler son - adorable! I love [name_u]Finn[/name_u] and all the variations, even though [name_u]Finn[/name_u] seems to be very common in my area. I have a [name_u]Flynn[/name_u], so [name_u]Finn[/name_u] is out of the question for future use for me!
I’d say go for it.
