The name Satchel?!

[name_u]Satchel[/name_u] is my favorite name, I just love it! But is it too far out there to name my son that? I know you might think of a “bag”, but how many other names also refer to an object or have multiple meanings? My hubby says who cares what people think. Should I go with it? Thoughts?! Thanks!

Go with what you love!

I’m really dislike it, but there’s at least a positive association besides a sack: [name_u]Satchel[/name_u] [name_f]Paige[/name_f] was a legendary pitcher of the Negro Leagues here in the states. As much as I dislike the name, it’s nice that there is something positive that can be drawn from! I do understand the name association thing…it’s one reason why I have a hard time liking the name [name_f]Hattie[/name_f]…it’s a hat. Nothing really great right there.

Ultimately, I guess if you like it enough, use it.

Right! I love sports, so I of course know the great [name_u]Satchel[/name_u] [name_f]Paige[/name_f]. I feel the same way about [name_f]Hattie[/name_f], too. Or [name_u]Jet[/name_u] or [name_m]Chip[/name_m] or [name_u]Cruz[/name_u] or [name_m]Tripp[/name_m], and on and on. I love the name [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] but when I actually broke it down and listened to it, it sounded like “[name_m]Harry[/name_m]-it”. There’s so many names like that too. But my dad, named [name_m]Harry[/name_m], who has since passed away, was the only person I’ve ever heard actually use the word satchel - he was also born in 1931 which I think back then that word was more common. Maybe, that’s why I like it so much though, due to the assoiciaton with my dad? Who knows… But regardless, I just think it’s so cute.

While I don’t immediately register “[name_u]Satchel[/name_u]” as a name it grows on you the more you think of it! I say go for it.

Of all the weird “celebrity” names, I’ve always found this kind of cute. It still sounds like a name when compared to other word names.

That makes me happy!!

I don’t like it at all.

I like it.

I think [name_u]Satchel[/name_u] is really cool! Plus [name_u]Satchel[/name_u] [name_f]Paige[/name_f] is a positive association! If you love it, I would use it.

I like the sound of [name_u]Satchel[/name_u], however, I cannot think of anything other than the bag.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think after hearing his name or referring to him or calling him [name_u]Satchel[/name_u] enough that you would forget the bag association? I don’t even know if that makes sense. Would the bag association wear off after time? Would [name_u]Satchel[/name_u] eventually be associated as a boy named [name_u]Satchel[/name_u]?

To your last point, I do think the association with a bag will wear off amongst people you know. I know an adult [name_f]Siri[/name_f] and before I met her in person, all I could think of is [name_f]Apple[/name_f]'s [name_f]Siri[/name_f]. Not anymore.

Now as for [name_u]Satchel[/name_u]… its so refreshing to hear about both parents loving a name so much AND loving a name that has so much meaning to you. So many times parents pick names based on sounds, look, or for no reason at all (which is of course perfectly fine), but it’s nice to know that this name has significance to you. I say go for it! Especially since the alternative is to find some other name that sounds nice, is less unusual, but that you don’t love as much

Wow! Such a good point. Thank you for that.

The first thing I thought of was definitely a type of bag, but the more I say it as a name, the more it sounds like a name. In that regard, I think you will be just fine. People will get used to it. It reminds me of the name [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m] in its sound, which I like (even though meaning trumps sound in this situation). If you love it, go for it. =]

Was it [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]'s Travels that always mentioned his [name_u]Satchel[/name_u]? For whatever reason that is what I think of from an inside joke to the novel when I was in 7th grade, but to each their own. Definitely would be unusual an uncommon but predictable to pronounce…
