The Nesting Instinct

I hate cleaning. I always have loathed cleaning and chores and would do them only because I have to. People who reorganized their stuff were crazy in my mind.
But in the past week, I just can’t stop. I wake up thinking about what I can clean. I sometimes get so engrossed in it that I forget to eat. I am currently reorganizing my spice cabinet. I also emptied my fridge and scrubbed the already clean walls, and I keep vaccuming the rug over and over again. I’ve gone insane!
A co-worker of mine said once I start wanting to clean that means the baby will be coming soon and that it is called nesting, but I am only 31 weeks so I am not going into labor any time soon.
Is this “nesting instinct” real? Can it start now? Or have a just had a weird personality change where I suddenly like to clean?

Sounds productive! Can you come over to my house?
Wouldn’t worry about it being any real indication that labor is imminent.

I don’t think I ever felt the urge to nest in late pregnancy. More like the urge to sleep!

Sometimes the cleaning/organizing mood just strikes ya.

Oh yeah, I am not worried, but that was the first time I had ever heard that term. She said she was scrubbing the floors on her hands and knees and then three days later she had a baby.
I really should be sleeping, hahaha, because I am really tired. But I keep thinking, “I can dust all the furniture!” or “why don’t I scrub the bathtub?”

[name_f]My[/name_f] aunt used to clean the house until her hands bled, every pregnancy. She was normally a very clean person, so I guess imminent babies just kicked things into high gear. I have never been pregnant, but this sounds pretty much like what I did back when we heard that we might be bringing home a baby (through adoption) in a week or so. I scrubbed the bathroom and then cried, then cleaned all of the baseboards and cried, then moved the fridge and cleaned behind it and cried… You get the idea.

Oh that sounds awful!
Maybe it is just a sub conscious thought of “there is gonna be a baby here, it needs to be a healthy, sterile environment”.

I pretty much nested my entire third trimester(s). I think the only reason they say it means labour is soon is because sometimes all that vigorous hands-and-knees scrubbing etc can rock the baby into position & can induce labour.

Huh, I never thought of that!

I never really felt that I “nested”. [name_f]Every[/name_f] time I wanted to clean or prepare things for the baby I was teased that I must be nesting however it was more just wanting to be prepared, which is something I always try to do anyways. I did try to step things up near the end but I knew I wouldn’t want to have to clean after the baby and we’d be having people come over so I felt it was necessary to keep the house at least somewhat decent before the baby.

I’ve definitely been in nesting mode for a few weeks now, although I’m only 26 weeks along. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though I’m so tired, I feel this nagging need to clean and organize. I think it’s just natural and totally a real thing. I’ve been really sick this whole pregnancy so my urges come and go…I expect a resurgence of nesting frenzy when I hopefully start feeling a little better!

I get the nesting instinct, but it doesn’t mean birth is imminent. It can happen anytime during the pg.

Yeah nesting doesn’t mean baby is coming soon, just the mums urge to get things in order for bub! Most women I know nest by preparing babies room, cleaning and washing and folding all of babies clothes/blankets etc. Some get that urge more than others and some don’t really at all.
