The Nickname Game

Currently, I’ve been having a lot of obsessions with nicknames.
Unhappy with your name? Post it and I’ll see if I can find/make a nickname for you! (A more unusual one, too, if possible.)

[name]EDIT[/name]: My name is [name]Sydney[/name], but I would never use the nn [name]Syd[/name]–for one, it sounds so masculine to me, and also, as I am named after my grandfather [name]Sidney[/name] nn [name]Sid[/name], it’s already used in our family. Any original [name]Sydney[/name] nn’s?

[name]Meredith[/name]

[name]Mira[/name]: This name is heavy on the mysterious notes. Personally, I prefer the pronounciation MEER-uh, but you can also go with MYE-ruh, if you like the sound of the name [name]Maya[/name].
[name]Dita[/name]: Oh, so vintage and cool, like current burlesque model/actress [name]Dita[/name] von Teese, and sounds similar to [name]Rita[/name] (we’re talking Hayworth).
[name]Edith[/name]: Soft and fits into the “grandma rebellion” trend. A similar nn is [name]Edie[/name].
[name]Red[/name]: Especially suited if you are a redhead or would label yourself as “fiery.”
[name]Merry[/name]: For someone who wants an unusual virtue name, unique from the Faiths, Hopes and Joys.
Mitty: Fresh in the way of [name]Hattie[/name] and [name]Kitty[/name]. Alternative is [name]Ettie[/name].
Ret/Rett: A unisex flash of a name, like [name]Jett[/name].
Merit: Perfect if you like word- or surname-inspired names. (Can also be spelled [name]Merritt[/name].)

Like any of them? (:

[name]Jessica[/name] & [name]Bianca[/name] & [name]Jonathon[/name] & [name]Nathan[/name] family names

I’ve never quite found the perfect nickname for my name. I know there are tons but can you share your favorites?
I’m [name]Elizabeth[/name].

[name]Jessica[/name]–
[name]Jessa[/name], which I think is much more updated than the average [name]Jess[/name] (think [name]Tessa[/name]).
Sessie, my favorite. Probably because I love the name [name]Cecily[/name], and this sounds similar.
[name]Essie[/name] & [name]Essa[/name], again, these are [name]Hattie[/name]/[name]Millie[/name]/[name]Nessie[/name] nicknames. Old fashioned, yet spunky.
Jia, this makes me think of Greece for some reason. Is [name]Gia[/name] a Greek name? Very goddess-esque.
[name]Cai[/name], ([name]KYE[/name]) straightforward, unisex and somehow like a musical note.
[name]Cay[/name]/[name]Cae[/name], I like the [name]Cay[/name] spelling better, as it is more vintage era, but [name]Cae[/name] uses all letters in the original name.
[name]EDIT[/name]: Adding Cesca/Sesca, a romantic, [name]Italia[/name]-esque name.

[name]Bianca[/name]:
Bia, [name]LOVE[/name], love, love. It seems so…romace-novel-heroine.
[name]Bina[/name], I have quite a preference to this one, as it is what I call my favorite cousin, [name]Sabina[/name]. It’s a name that seems to fit into all societies and cultures.
Binka, this name is like [name]Bina[/name], but with a POW! It’s a nickname that dances in glittery attire and sings Broadway showtunes at full volume.
[name]Annie[/name], if you’re going for sweet. [name]Ana[/name], if you’re going for mystery.
[name]Nancy[/name], which I’ve somewhat warmed up to in recent years. A kind of use-it-just-because-you’re-cool-enough-to-pull-it-off name.
[name]Cai[/name], see above.

[name]Jonathan[/name]:
[name]Jonah[/name], Biblical and cool.
[name]Jonny[/name], a British name, a la [name]Alfie[/name] and [name]Freddy[/name], in my mind.
Jath, too-spankin’-awesome rebel name.
See [name]Nathan[/name] below for rest.

[name]Nathan[/name]:
[name]Nate[/name], this will never sound unsexy. It’s like the [name]Kate[/name] for guys.
[name]Nat[/name], if you’re tired of [name]Nate[/name]. I, personally, favor this one more. [name]Nate[/name] is a pretty-boy, but [name]Nat[/name] is a thinker.
Than (which I prn [name]Tan[/name]), having an H, but not saying it is like saying [name]Thames[/name] “Tims”–much more classy.
[name]Nash[/name], okay, there isn’t an S in this, I just really like this name! And there are plenty of weird nn’s, right? Hello, [name]Buffy[/name] for [name]Elizabeth[/name]?
Nathe (prn NAYTH), another [name]Nate[/name] update. Soft, but definitely masculine. Like [name]Ralph[/name] when prn “[name]Rafe[/name].”
[name]Nan[/name], the equivalent to [name]Nathan[/name] as [name]Kit[/name] is to [name]Christopher[/name]. So very cool, but unexpected in our generation.

Like 'em? (:

I LOOOOVE [name]Elizabeth[/name]!! And you’re right, the nn’s are absolutely endless. Here are the ones currently on my mind–
[name]Liesel[/name], ([name]LEE[/name]-zull) thank you, Sound of [name]Music[/name]. I knew my music teacher was doing something right when she showed us that movie.
Lisbette, as in, “Yes, I went there. Yes, I am Lisbette. [name]Bow[/name] down to my sophisticated glory.”
[name]Elsie[/name]/[name]Elsa[/name]/[name]Ilsa[/name], [name]Elsie[/name], despite being a cow, is country-chic. [name]Ilsa[/name] (or [name]Ilse[/name]) is the hot [name]German[/name] chick. [name]Elsa[/name] is sort of an inbetween.
[name]Betsy[/name], I knew a drop-dead gorgeous, oh-so innocent and sweet girl with this name. It has grown on me since.
[name]Bette[/name], just look up [name]Bette[/name] ([name]BET[/name]-ee) [name]Davis[/name]. Seriously. Google “[name]Bette[/name] [name]Davis[/name] quotes.” She is my new hero.
[name]Liza[/name], speaking of famous actresses…I mean Minnelli here. Actually, I just finished watching Cabaret. If that acting doesn’t inspire you to be a [name]Liza[/name], then I’m not sure what will. (Plus, with all these Ellas, it’ll just be a blink before [name]Eliza[/name] takes over.)
Bizza, I read a book where the [name]Elizabeth[/name] was Bizza. [name]Even[/name] though the character was a total jerk, it made an impression.
Libba, because of the author Libba [name]Bray[/name]. I love her books. (And [name]Libby[/name] is a little too [name]Lizzie[/name] which is a little too [name]Lizzie[/name] [name]McGuire[/name] for me. My mind works in strange ways.)
[name]Sally[/name], can this work for [name]Elizabeth[/name]? …Well, I think it should be able to. It’s not fair leaving it to today’s ungrateful Saras who don’t even bother to use it. (: I guess [name]Zally[/name] could be an alternative.
[name]Zetta[/name] or Zeth or [name]Zella[/name], why is no one taking advantage of this perfectly beautiful, outrageous, awesome Z in a classic name??? Any of these nn’s would do it justice! Come on, people!

So, any of these YOUR type of [name]Elizabeth[/name]? (:

[name]Nicola[/name]

[name]Sarah[/name]. I have never been able to get a good nickname out of it.

I’m [name]Lily[/name].

I’m curious to see what you can make out of it. Thanks!

[name]Nicole[/name].
[name]Nikki[/name].
Cola.

[name]Lil[/name].
[name]Lila[/name].
[name]Lilo[/name].
Lills.

[name]Saar[/name]. [pr. Sah-r.]
Sare. [pr. like care]
Rhee. [pr. like [name]Lee[/name]]
[name]Rai[/name]. [from ancient version of [name]Sarah[/name] ([name]Sarai[/name])]

I know many nicknames to my name, but what about my daughter’s name. It is actually a nickname itself, her middle name being [name]Elisabeth[/name].

[name]Lissa[/name]. Nicknamed from e[name]LISabeth[/name] (pronounced Liss-uh, like [name]Melissa[/name], minus the Me)

[name]Nola[/name], a sort of organic-sounding, could-be-an-It name.
[name]Nica[/name], updated [name]Nicky[/name]. Be sure to pronounce the I as EE!
[name]Cole[/name], for a unisex one, which might sound fresher on girls than boys.
Nillie, i.e. [name]Nellie[/name]/[name]Millie[/name] hybrid.
[name]Lola[/name], I just love this one. Sexy!
[name]Nia[/name], simple, sweet, dainty.
[name]Iola[/name], a variant of [name]Iole[/name], which means “violet.”
[name]Callie[/name], a bright, perky name.

Like any, [name]Nicola[/name]?

Right now, probably due to my current obsession with the perfume Laugh With Me, [name]LeeLee[/name], I am actually warming up to [name]LeeLee[/name]. I’m not sure if you could consider this a nickname, per se, but it works in my book.(: Maybe Ily (prn EYE-lee), although when I see this, I immediately think I.L.Y.=I [name]Love[/name] You. That may be a positive or negative to you. [name]Lilla[/name] is another idea–make sure it rhymes with [name]Willa[/name]. And [name]Lilias[/name] is a [name]Lily[/name] form that could be used as a nickname, and that I love.

Any of them your particular favorites?

I’m sure you’ve heard these before, but
[name]Sadie[/name] & [name]Sally[/name].
[name]Sally[/name] is like the uber-popular [name]Ally[/name] nn, but–better. It’s so retro-cool.
Whereas [name]Sadie[/name] is just an I’m-a-star-so-take-it-or-leave-it name.
[name]Ara[/name] is a close runner-up. It has the sound of the princess-y [name]Arabella[/name] and [name]Araminta[/name], but short and sophisticated.
[name]Sarita[/name] is also very spicy, and has become I name I love.
[name]Sassa[/name] is a sassy Swedish diminutive.
[name]Say[/name] is a simple, upfront nn, in the style of [name]Kay[/name]/[name]Fay[/name]/[name]May[/name].
[name]EDIT[/name]: Sarie, (SAIR-ee) which is free-spirited sounding and airy.

I hope that helped!

You could always go with diminutives–Lisita for a hispanic feel, [name]Lisette[/name] for a french. Lissy is an obvious answer, if not a lifeless one. [name]Lia[/name] works, if you omit the S’s. (I like this spelling better than the [name]Leah[/name] one, anyway.) I find [name]Sissy[/name] cute–some people may see it as a synonym for “wuss,” but I don’t really hear anyone ever using that as an insult anymore. It seems more intimate and endearing to me–like a sister. My favorite [name]Lissa[/name] nickname, though, is [name]Ilsa[/name] (just an S omitted and letters flipped). [name]Isla[/name] similarly works, as does [name]Lily[/name].

My good friends sometimes call me Lissy, and, it’s funny because no one considers this a nickname, but my sister always calls me [name]Lilly[/name].

I’ve always disliked that my name, [name]Lisa[/name], doesn’t have any “good” nicknames. Because of that I’ve gone by [name]Lisa[/name] [name]Paige[/name] formally for a while, since I’ve always found [name]Lisa[/name] to plain for my personality, though most people end up resorting to just [name]Lisa[/name] anyway. Some of my very good friends call me LP (ell-pee, or Elpy, phonetically) which is fine in my close circle. My close family calls me [name]Lise[/name], which seems to informal for real life use, and [name]Lee[/name] seems to masculine to me. Any interesting nicknames for [name]Lisa[/name] you can come up with? You’re very good at this!
