The Picture in One's Head

Does anyone but me feel like they have a clear vision of what sort of child fits with a particular name? And if so, does it cause you to worry that you’ll give the wrong baby the wrong name? We’ve probably all met someone at some point whose name we thought did not really suit him/her.

My husband and I are developing a list of names to take to the hospital so we’ll have plenty of pre-cleared options to select from once we meet him/her. But even then…eye color is a good example of a concern here. Since eye color changes for months after birth, what if you give a baby a name that seems to fit a blue-eyed child only to end up with a brown-eyed child? Or vice versa?

Does anyone else worry about this sort of thing?

I do not worry about this at all. I’m more inclined to think a child will fit into his/her name regardless of what name is chosen. That being said, I do try to choose names that will fit at any age of my child’s life. My family is also known to assign nicknames after the child reaches a certain age that are completely unrelated to the child’s given name. (My father, [name_u]Roy[/name_u], has been known as [name_m]Tucker[/name_m] for the past 60 years because he loved the song “Old [name_m]Dan[/name_m] [name_m]Tucker[/name_m]” when he was a tot. This also helped to distinguish him from his father, another [name_u]Roy[/name_u]). So, if I ever get to thinking that my children’s names don’t seem to suit them, an endearing nickname will surface and suffice.
