From Nameberry:
The meaning and origin of this extremely rare name are unclear, but it may be related to the Germanic name Alvar āelf warriorā, or to Allovera/Elvira āall trueā.
From BtN:
Of extremely uncertain origin and meaning.
In the US, this name was first found in 1768; in the UK, there were several uses throughout the 1800s (and most likely before that as well). While the background of the American bearers of this name is unknown, almost all British bearers were born to traveling Romani families.
I know this is a bit subjective, but in general if you had to choose one for your name combos, do you prefer . . .

I think the closeness to the english ape would be more concerning but I donāt think either is a problem.
I think in everyday life middles are so rarely used that I truly could not care that much about flow. Itās a nice thing but noting more and a name I love would be so much dearer to me.
Both equally!
A random thought I have⦠I canāt decide if I prefer Alastair or Alistair, and Iām curious what everyone else has to say!

i immediately assume floy as floyd without the ādā but saying it flow-ee sounds adorable
Is repeating Winter in one of the options (Winter Juliet) intentional when one of the sibling quadruplets already has Winter as a mn?
Welp this made me confused. Not sure if this is a different accent issue again or if you accidentally mixed up ālongā and āshortā vowels or maybe both but Frank is a long -a to me like bait, hate, cake (vs short -a in cat, add, bath). Father is more like a short -o sound like box, rock, stop, pot for me
Iāve never met one either but all the dozen pronunciation guides and various video clips (including an interview of someone named Ivo) Iāve seen for Ivo say itās ee. But Ivo has never been in the top 1000 in the US so you can probably get people to use whichever pronunciation you want since most people will have never heard of the name to realize itās supposed to be ee.
I love both Eva and Ivo too btw and like you, I like both pronunciations of Ivo but am personally unsure at the idea of changing what seems to be the original pronunciation even if most people instinctively say eye but this is probably just a me issue.
Other ideas are relatives Ivor and Yves. In contrast with Ivo, I see both ee and eye pronunciations for Ivor online with eye pronunciation being common among English speakers which would make me more comfortable using that pronunciation. Yves is pronounced eev so practically no one will know how to spell Yves in the US but I thought Iād still mention it.
It would depend if how youāre pronouncing the name and would depend if for a boy or girl (I know itās a girls name but I like it on a boy). Basically I like the -fair ending, Ella- is exclusively girl for me, and the others are unisex and just depends on pronunciation so I selected, Alafair, Alifair, Elifair, and Ellafair as my favorites
I appreciate this thought, and thinking of it like this makes me agree with you! I honestly couldnāt decide before.
@readingreverie Both equally is completely valid. I would have put that option, but was worried people would only choose that then (as of course both are important!).
