I’d think it was a unique way to spell [name_f]Mary[/name_f]
@winterlyricalfox - I always said it closer to [name_u]Marie[/name_u] because I found it through a typo of [name_u]Marie[/name_u] and thought I invented [name_f]Mayre[/name_f]

If you had a more popular name (Just outside the top 500) and your siblings had names outside the top 1000 would you feel resentful of that
- Yes
- No
I’m going to go with no because the potential for resentment would probably be more based off if they met other people with their name than what the literal chart ranking is and at under 500 its unusual enough that they probably wouldn’t meet too many others with the name which would put them in the same boat as their siblings of having their name feel pretty unique.
Is Gretel too tied to the fairy tale for you?
- Personally, yes
- Nah
Does the Gretl spelling make it less tied to the fairy tale?
- Yes
- No, it’s just as tied to the fairy tale with this spelling
Why do you dislike the Gretl spelling?
- Looks weird
- I just prefer the more common spelling
- I don’t like the sound of music
- I have a bad association with this spelling
- other
- I like the Gretl spelling
Summary
Seeing the results from the Gretel / Gretl poll I just am curious about some of these questions!! Personally I find the Gretl spelling adorable probably because of the Sound of Music association…but I like both spellings!
[name_f]Gretl[/name_f] makes me wanna say “gret-le” (like there’s gonna be another sound attached to the “L” like Gretlynn or something, but it’s cutting off beforehand), not “gret-el”
- luca
- felix
- hugo
- oscar
- jasper

- flora
- nora

Nah, I feel the difference wouldn’t be distinguishable. [name_f]My[/name_f] name was ranked around 150 when I was born in the mid 90’s, and even that felt like a rare name to me. I never met someone my age with my name until college. [name_m]Even[/name_m] then, I met her in passing and I never saw her again. I don’t think I’ve met another my age since. I would assume someone with a name outside the top 500 would have a similarly rare name as someone with name outside the top 1000. Of course, that’s just my assumption
Some names I used to write when I was little! I’m sorry if this tortures you idea from @Youssarian

[name_f]My[/name_f] brother’s name is consistently in the top 10 or 20, my sister’s is in the top 500 or so, and mine is ranked somewhere around 10,000 and none of us have ever had this kind of an issue. It would definitely depend on the individual’s personality and what they perceive as bothersome or not, but none of us have ever had a problem with the differing popularity rankings (or even really noticed them)

Knowing that the [name_f]Gretl[/name_f] spelling is related to The Sound of [name_f]Music[/name_f] makes me like it more. It still looks a bit odd to me, probably because I’m more used to the [name_f]Gretel[/name_f] version, but [name_f]Gretl[/name_f] is growing on me.
If it was just [name_f]Essi[/name_f] then it would work perfectly fine but these are just two completely different names to me, it’d be like having a [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] being nn [name_u]Lauren[/name_u] just because they both have -rin sounds in it. Sorry babe
