would Sayla/Saela/Saila (or any alternative spelling for this pronunciation of Selah) be weird for an ex-christian, non-religious person to use?

  • yes, it still feels tied to the religious meaning of selah
  • yes to me, but maybe not for other people
  • no, the change in spelling takes away the association
  • no, regardless of spelling, it wouldn’t be weird for an ex-christian to use Selah

it seems to be the most common/well accepted pronunciation of Selah on this site but everywhere else lists the pronunciation as sell-ah or see-lah, so it’s always been a point of confusion for me, especially since I never heard Selah in a religious setting before I outgrew the faith

tbh i think it’s so similar to common names like kayla, layla, sheila, etc. that i don’t think anyone would bat an eye at it – to be honest i had no idea it was religious in any way, and i don’t think most people would? from what i can tell it’s not a name with a super religious meaning despite originating from the bible (BtN says it refers to a musical pause?) so i wouldn’t find it inappropriate regardless

im not concerned about it being “inappropriate” as much as I am concerned that it would be seen as weird or if it would indicate to others that I am religious/specifically christian

since I never heard it at religious services, I also associate it with names like [name_f]Layla[/name_f] or [name_f]Sailor[/name_f]!
