Maybe Maudelyn? [name_m]Or[/name_m] Maudelin? Honestly I just picture the word maudlin but wouldn’t suggest that spelling because the word doesn’t have a meaning I’d want to give a kid personally.
its a little of a stretch (the best nns always are haha), but i think i would realize it after looking at his name for a second. also if its only a pet name i think it doesn’t quite matter as much to the reader, and is easier to look over.
bookish, quiet, academic, dreamy, someone that thinks before they act, wishful, longing for something beyond the ordinary, wanting things they don’t have, responsible, awkward, and restless

Quirky, whimsical, care-free, spirited, messy but things always work out for her, effortlessly graceful and stylish, chic, restless, playful, not bound by rules or restrictions, indifferent to social norms, ‘manic-pixie-dream girl’.
I can see how it makes sense for a nn but in the context of a story how much it would throw me off would depend on how it was introduced. If the scene where the other version of their name was introcued made it very clear that this is the same person I would be totally fine. If it was not super clear it would probably take me a second and a reread of the context clues to figure it out and then I would be fine.
