excited to see this happens to someone else !! while it doesn’t for me with gp (probably because i’m used to reading and saying “gp” aloud short for general practitioner), i often read initials in my head with a hard sound (e.g. kee-ay-eff instead of see-ay-eff)
i think the average (english/american) person would be able to confidently mispronounce björn with ease. in english, the ö is often regarded as essentially decorative, and so i’ve almost always heard it in english like byorn. if you want it to be pronounced exactly right, i think it will be a problem. if you want it to not be confusing or stressful, i think you’re fine.
@rosepip i agree with that 100%! i’m not sure how much the byorn mispronunciation bothers me - since this is for a side character, i don’t think it’s too big of a deal?
and i do want to include a pronunciation guide at the front so hopefully people would actually read that and use it! i guess i just don’t want the name to completely trip people up when they first see it
I live in the US and I think readers would confidently pronounce [name_m]Björn[/name_m], but with the “ör” pronounced “or” !
I think [name_m]Björn[/name_m] Borg and [name_u]Baby[/name_u] [name_m]Björn[/name_m] make this name feel familiar here, but I’ve never actually heard either of these pronounced with the ö sound.
@acajou I am so glad I’m not the only one who calls it Baby Björn (the brand is apparently actually called Baby Born, but I didn’t know that til I was 25!)
I think you could use [name_f]Lily[/name_f] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], and that would actually be a very pretty name and not too extreme, but [name_f]Tigerlily[/name_f] is already pretty far out on its own, and would need a very mild name to balance it out. [name_f]Tigerlily[/name_f] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] sounds like a good [name_f]My[/name_f] [name_m]Little[/name_m] Pony though
[name_f]Athena[/name_f] [name_u]Grey[/name_u] is lovely, but she is often described as the “grey-eyed goddess”, so I would keep that in mind. It doesn’t read as cheesy or obvious to me at all, though, so I voted for [name_f]Athena[/name_f] [name_u]Grey[/name_u]. All of your combinations are so stunning!
The battle of the -dora names! I recently read about Heliodora being the name of the “first known Hellenistic female astronomer,” which instantly grabbed my attention, along with the lovely meaning of “gift of the sun.” I’m so torn! Musidora means “gift of the Muses,” for reference. Much thanks, Berries!
Thanks for your input! I actually really like Tigerlily as a full first name (for a human, though a my little pony would be pretty amazing) I’m still not too sure on Marigold, I’m thinking of saving it for a sister name instead!
