IMO a nickname making sense and being usable are completely different things. I’d just consider it a nickname unrelated to the given name.

Curious if these go together or I’m overthinking it? :yellow_heart:

That’s right, I’m still obsessed with [name_m]Hyacinth[/name_m]— and as indecisive as ever.

As always, this is not for a real child so usability is not a concern!

If you met a boy Augustine, you would guess it was pronounced… (I’m bad at writing out pronunciations but I think you’ll understand what I’m getting at

  • aw-GUS-tin
  • aw-gus-TEEN

I would say AW-gus-teen (I assume that’s what you meant by the second one, so I voted for it!!)

if a parent and child have names that start with the same 2 letters and share similar sounds, would you assume the child’s name is honouring the parent?

think cassandra names her baby callista, victor has a viveca, katherine has a kasper, edmund has an eden, etc…

  • yes, i’d think it may be an honour name
  • no, it wouldn’t cross my mind

it wouldn’t really be “guessing” how it’s pronounced. More my standard way of pronouncing the written form Augustine is aw-GUS-tin. Like Saint Augustine…i’ve met a couple of boys through the years with this name. And my parents were married at Saint Augustine’s church.

It would more be a surprise if that wasn’t the pronunciation. I would assume it was like the default I’ve always known.

I think I lean -teen on instinct but I wouldn’t be surprised by the other! [name_m]Augustin[/name_m] would definitely be the tin pronunciation for me.

Which do prefer as a first name ? :blossom:

AWE-gus-teen. This is is how I’ve always pronounced it, girl or boy.

[name_f]Honor[/name_f] name is a strong word but I’d think it’s not a coincidence. More “the similarity is cute” than “I’m naming after myself”
