The Royal Baby is here... and it's a boy!

I had a dream that it was a boy and they named him [name]James[/name] [name]Arthur[/name] [name]Philip[/name] [name]Louis[/name]

@violetgray: [name]James[/name] [name]Arthur[/name] [name]Philip[/name] [name]Louis[/name] is rather handsome, I must say! My guess is [name]Arthur[/name] or [name]Alexander[/name].

[name]Alexander[/name] [name]Charles[/name] [name]Phillip[/name] [name]James[/name].

Okay, I know there’s already our fabulous [name]Royal[/name] Thread, but I doubt anyone’s going to read through all our discussions now :stuck_out_tongue: So can I add my thoughts on a few suggestions here?

I really don’t think these are in the running for a FN (lovely as some of them are):

[name]Louis[/name] - very French. No history.
[name]Philip[/name] - name of a royal ‘outsider’, much like [name]Albert[/name]. Good bet for a middle though.
[name]James[/name] - name of too many close relatives.
[name]Alexander[/name] - too ‘odd’ for a first born. No history with English rulers.
[name]Henry[/name] - even though [name]Prince[/name] [name]Henry[/name] goes by [name]Harry[/name], I doubt they’ll use [name]William[/name]'s brother’s name.
[name]Spencer[/name] - for neither first nor middle. [name]IMO[/name], it’s seen as a bit ‘downmarket’ here in the UK.
[name]Michael[/name] - just no!
[name]Edward[/name] - I begrudgingly put this here. Several close relatives and also the ‘betrayal’ and controversy with [name]Edward[/name] VIII is apparently still a little raw.

I reckon [name]George[/name], [name]Frederick[/name] & [name]Arthur[/name] are the most likely, without outside chances from [name]Richard[/name], [name]John[/name], [name]Alfred[/name], [name]Albert[/name]… and even [name]William[/name]. And I’m 95% positive that he’ll be given 4 names.

Likely middles, in my view: [name]Charles[/name], [name]Francis[/name], [name]Henry[/name], [name]Philip[/name], [name]George[/name], [name]Arthur[/name], [name]Edward[/name], [name]Albert[/name], [name]James[/name]… pretty much the same really :stuck_out_tongue:

But man, I’m still so smug from finding out it’s a boy! Sorry to brag, but I always had a feeling it were a wee lad

Also, [name]George[/name] is currently at #12 in [name]England[/name] & [name]Wales[/name], not #6!

I’m thinking it’s [name]Arthur[/name] [name]Albert[/name] [name]William[/name] [name]Charles[/name].

I’m hoping [name]Arthur[/name]! It’s one of [name]William[/name]'s middle names. I think I read once that [name]Diana[/name] wanted [name]William[/name] to go by [name]Arthur[/name] but [name]Charles[/name] didn’t like it.

My top pick is a maybe far-fetched [name]Carl[/name].

I also like [name]Albert[/name], [name]Arthur[/name], and [name]Philip[/name].

I too am glad it’s a prince.

I have a few places where [name]Spencer[/name] was suggested. Is that a possibility? Seems unlikely to me.

On the other hand, I am not sure I believe that so little control in the boy’s name. I think part of the speculation is everyone wants to be right and what is easier to guess than that they’ll have to pick a family name. I am hoping for something a little more inventive.

Isn’t [name]Frederick[/name] rather harshly [name]German[/name]?

The last three names are identical to [name]William[/name]'s last three ([name]William[/name] [name]Arthur[/name] [name]Philip[/name] [name]Louis[/name])

[name]How[/name]? [name]Frederick[/name] is the English form of a [name]German[/name] name but I don’t get how it’s ‘harshly [name]German[/name]’ or why being [name]German[/name] is a bad thing. Are W&K only allowed to use names which are English in origin?! They’d be extremely restricted! :stuck_out_tongue:

Being [name]German[/name] is great (it covers a good portion of my ancestry), but that name seems distinctively [name]German[/name] to me. If they’re open to international names, [name]Alexander[/name] seems a stronger, more regal choice. And I think, given that it’s a variation of [name]Alexandra[/name], it does have history in the royal family.

I was so sure it would be a girl! I’m also hoping they don’t go the predictable route of [name]George[/name] or [name]James[/name] but that seems to be what most people are predicting. They both make me yawn…

I’ll go out on a limb - [name]Alfred[/name] [name]Charles[/name] [name]William[/name] [name]Philip[/name]. [name]Prince[/name] [name]Alfie[/name].

[name]Ah[/name] ok. It seems quite English to me, especially with the nn [name]Freddie[/name]! But I really don’t think [name]Alexander[/name] is in the running for this bub. [name]Just[/name] because the feminine form has been used doesn’t mean it’s got great history in the family. To my knowledge, there’s only been one [name]Alexander[/name] ever born to a English monarch (even then it was the third-born son who died within hours of birth) and I really think W&K will stick with something more traditional for their first born. [name]Alexander[/name] is very handsome though and I would love to see it used for a subsequent son

[name]Francis[/name] [name]William[/name] Mountbatten-[name]Windsor[/name]

[[name]Frances[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] Mountbatten-[name]Windsor[/name] for a future daughter]

Oh, I hope they don’t use [name]Alexander[/name]! Not that I’m worried about popularity – it’s already popular enough – but we already have a [name]William[/name], plan to name a future daughter [name]Catherine[/name], and [name]Alexander[/name] is our top choice for another boy. I don’t mind using [name]William[/name] and [name]Catherine[/name] in the same sibset, but I think picking the same name as their son would just be too much!

As I see it, there’s six strong contenders right now:
[name]George[/name]: As much as I’d wish they’d just pack this name far away, I do think this is the likeliest name. The line of royal [name]Georges[/name] just speak for itself really, if [name]Baby[/name] Bub Cambridge is a [name]George[/name], he’ll eventually become [name]King[/name] [name]George[/name] VII (that is unless [name]Charles[/name] use [name]George[/name], which is rather unlikely in my opinion, but I know some people are very certain that he’ll do so, in that case, he’ll (obviously) be [name]George[/name] VIII). As beautiful as it is on an adult, I think it’s such a heavy name for a little child.
[name]Philip[/name]: For the [name]Duke[/name] of Edinburgh, obviously. I’m willing to bet most of my money on it certainly being somewhere in the name. The [name]DoE[/name] has been a great support for [name]William[/name], especially when [name]Diana[/name] died. To this day, it still moves me deeply that [name]Philip[/name], though not being fond of [name]Diana[/name], offered to walk with [name]William[/name] (and [name]Harry[/name]) behind her coffin when he initially didn’t want to. That combined with the [name]DoE[/name]'s health problems and the fact that there has been a [name]King[/name] [name]Philip[/name] before (though he was by the right of his wife, [name]Queen[/name] [name]Mary[/name] I), leads me to believe that this is a very likely name.
[name]Edward[/name]: A future [name]King[/name] [name]Edward[/name] IX (which sounds incredibly handsome). I don’t think that [name]Edward[/name] VIII’s business with Miss [name]Simpson[/name] will pull the name down, because close to every royal name comes with a baggage and that is unavoidable. It is already in use those ([name]Earl[/name] of Wessex and [name]Duke[/name] of [name]Kent[/name]), and that I think will pull it down, especially because I think that [name]Catherine[/name] is close to the [name]Countess[/name] of Wessex and they’ll see each other quite often. They could use an adorable nickname like [name]Teddy[/name] to separate them from each other. [name]Edward[/name] is also the given name of [name]William[/name]'s grandfather, the 8th [name]Earl[/name] [name]Spencer[/name].
[name]Arthur[/name]: Admittedly one of my favourites. It seems like somewhat of a tradition to include [name]Arthur[/name] in the name of the firstborn son (or, tradition and tradition, it started with [name]George[/name] [name]VI[/name] and has continued with both [name]Charles[/name] and [name]William[/name]). I do think it’s likely that they’ll use it as a first name though. [name]How[/name] cool would a [name]King[/name] [name]Arthur[/name] be? Besides, it’s a lovely name and it isn’t too dated.
[name]Richard[/name]: Another one of my guilty pleasures for the bub. The last [name]King[/name] named [name]Richard[/name] (III), was not a bad one of his kind, and then there obviously is the infamous Lionheart. My concern is that it might be a little too dated (though, in my opinion, equally as dated as [name]George[/name]) and I, like with [name]George[/name], think it’s a rather heavy name for a little child to carry. As wonderful as [name]Lord[/name] Mountbatten’s nickname, [name]Dickie[/name], was, I doubt a little [name]Richard[/name] would be called that nowadays (sadly, because I think that both [name]Dickie[/name] and [name]Dicky[/name] are great nicknames).
[name]Alexander[/name]: A wild card, admittedly. Actually this was on my list of names for a younger brother of the firstborn because that seems kinda obvious as it’s a modern-ish name, but it has great history and links to [name]Scotland[/name]. I do think it would make such a handsome name for a future [name]King[/name] though. Besides, the [name]Little[/name] [name]Prince[/name] is born on the birthdate of [name]Joan[/name] of [name]England[/name], consort to [name]Alexander[/name] II of [name]Scotland[/name] (finding all kinds of links because that’s how passionate I am about the name).

Jokers: [name]Albert[/name] (given name of HM’s beloved father), [name]Frederick[/name] (I think it’s unlikely, but it would be a pleasant surprise with a little [name]Freddie[/name]).

Middles: [name]Francis[/name] (for [name]Michael[/name] [name]Francis[/name] Middleton, [name]Diana[/name] [name]Frances[/name] and [name]Frances[/name] Shand Kydd), [name]James[/name] (they could potentially name him something and then give [name]James[/name] as a middle, and then perhaps he’ll choose to reign as [name]James[/name]), [name]David[/name] (again, a historical name which is so much more than what [name]Edward[/name] VIII went by, it is also the name of the patron saint of [name]Wales[/name]), [name]Michael[/name] (maternal grandfather), [name]Charles[/name] (paternal grandfather), [name]Andrew[/name] (paternal great-grandfather and the patron saint of [name]Scotland[/name]).

I think [name]Lord[/name] Mountbatten would turn in his grave and beg to differ  I very much agree with you about [name]Spencer[/name], if they wanna honour [name]Diana[/name] somehow, I’m sure they’ll use [name]Francis[/name] as that also pays tribute to [name]Michael[/name] ([name]Francis[/name]) Middleton and [name]Frances[/name] Shand Kydd. I don’t even think that [name]William[/name] is that terribly close to the Spencers either, especially not [name]Earl[/name] [name]Spencer[/name]. [name]Sarah[/name] McCorquodale if any.

At first I thought [name]George[/name], but it is the name of [name]Mary[/name] and [name]Matthew[/name] Crawley’s son on Downton [name]Abbey[/name].
What about [name]Rupert[/name] or [name]Leopold[/name]?

I’m hoping its either [name]Frederick[/name] [name]Charles[/name] [name]George[/name] or [name]Frederick[/name] [name]Spencer[/name] [name]Charles[/name].

[name]Spencer[/name] for [name]Diana[/name] of course.

Well i still think that George, Phillip or Albert are way too dull or horrid for them to choose, so i’m guessing Henry(not harry), Frederick-Freddie or Charles-Charlie. Or ‘maybe’ Edward, but would they use it considering its william’s uncle’s name??? what do other people think?

Edit: it might be Jamie(james officially) if her brother isn’t called Jamie ever or Alexander possibly although there has never been a King Alexander.

It’s very limited with (boys) names that aren’t already in use:

[name]Albert[/name]: Master [name]Albert[/name] [name]Windsor[/name], son of [name]Lord[/name] [name]Nicholas[/name] [name]Windsor[/name].
[name]Alexander[/name]: [name]Alexander[/name] [name]Windsor[/name], the [name]Earl[/name] of Ulster, son of the [name]Duke[/name] of Gloucester.
[name]Arthur[/name]: Master [name]Arthur[/name] Chatto, son of Lady [name]Sarah[/name] Chatto.
[name]Charles[/name]: [name]Prince[/name] [name]Charles[/name], the [name]Prince[/name] of [name]Wales[/name]; and the Hon. [name]Charles[/name] [name]Armstrong[/name]-[name]Jones[/name], son of Viscount Linley.
[name]David[/name]: [name]David[/name] [name]Armstrong[/name]-[name]Jones[/name], Viscount Linley, son of [name]Princess[/name] [name]Margaret[/name].
[name]Edward[/name]: [name]Prince[/name] [name]Edward[/name], the [name]Earl[/name] of Wessex; [name]Prince[/name] [name]Edward[/name], the [name]Duke[/name] of [name]Kent[/name]; and [name]Edward[/name] [name]Windsor[/name], [name]Lord[/name] Downpatrick, son of the [name]Earl[/name] of St. Andrews.
[name]Frederick[/name]: [name]Lord[/name] [name]Frederick[/name] [name]Windsor[/name], son of [name]Prince[/name] [name]Michael[/name] of [name]Kent[/name].
[name]George[/name]: [name]George[/name] [name]Windsor[/name], the [name]Earl[/name] of St. Andrews, son of the [name]Duke[/name] of [name]Kent[/name].
[name]Henry[/name]: The proud uncle, [name]Prince[/name] [name]Harry[/name] of [name]Wales[/name].
[name]James[/name]: [name]James[/name] Middleton; [name]James[/name] Mountbatten-[name]Windsor[/name], Viscount Severn; and [name]James[/name] Ogilvy, son of [name]Princess[/name] [name]Alexandra[/name] of [name]Kent[/name].
[name]Philip[/name]: [name]Prince[/name] [name]Philip[/name], the [name]Duke[/name] of Edinburgh.
[name]Richard[/name]: [name]Prince[/name] [name]Richard[/name], the [name]Duke[/name] of Gloucester.

Obviously, some are closer to [name]William[/name] and [name]Catherine[/name] than others ([name]James[/name] Middleton and Viscount Severn are notably closer to them than say, [name]Albert[/name] [name]Windsor[/name] and [name]Lord[/name] Downpatrick). I consider a name like [name]Edward[/name] likely because it’s super traditional like [name]George[/name]. A future [name]King[/name] [name]Edward[/name] would be the ninth of his kind. There’s also a notable age difference between [name]Baby[/name] Boy Cambridge and the [name]Earl[/name] of Wessex, whereas one of the major reasons why I consider [name]James[/name] to be a no-go is that the age difference between [name]Baby[/name] Boy Cambridge and Viscount Severn is so little. [name]Edward[/name] is also a [name]Spencer[/name] name. [name]Diana[/name]'s father was [name]Edward[/name] [name]John[/name] [name]Spencer[/name].
