I’m in love with [name_f]Petra[/name_f], honestly. I also feel like I just need to include [name_f]Olympias[/name_f] because it seems perfect for you family in so many ways.
I was originally going to chime in with a laundry list of [name_f]Petra[/name_f] combos, but after reading the links to why you love the various names, I just cannot see anything other than [name_f]Olympias[/name_f] for you! Oh my soul and body, the way you described you and your partner’s journey of falling in love with the name, the powerful inspiration of the historical figure - down to the way the hissing S at the end reminds you of the way she slept with snakes in her bad, how badass of a detail is that?? - not to mention the multitude of tie-ins with the timing… I just look at this and go, “how could it not be the one?” Of course, the decision is ultimately yours, and whatever you choose will be magical. I just had to explain why instead of going hard for [name_f]Petra[/name_f], I’ve been completely won over by [name_f]Olympias[/name_f], so those are the only combos I have.
I lean toward one-middle combos, simply because that matches the flow of the siblings’ names. So rather than brainstorming a bunch of two-middle combos, I found myself pairing [name_f]Olympias[/name_f] with everything and analyzing each of the one-middle options. I hope that’s not too much of a departure from what you were looking for!
[name_f]Olympias[/name_f] [name_f]Petra[/name_f] - I really want this to work, because I do so love Petra, it would put two of your favorites in one combo (a bonus, since I seem to be reading that this is the last baby for you), and the combo fits in beautifully with the other names in your sibset. My one hangup is that I feel like the P sounds are too close together for it to flow properly.
[name_f]Olympias[/name_f] [name_f]Perpetua[/name_f] - Conversely, perhaps because [name_f]Perpetua[/name_f] has four syllables to [name_f]Petra[/name_f]'s two, I felt like the close-together P sounds were less of a stumble-over in this combo, despite the fact that [name_f]Perpetua[/name_f] adds a third P into the mix. If I’m getting suuuper analytical, I think it’s because with [name_f]Perpetua[/name_f] being a longer name than [name_f]Petra[/name_f], I naturally insert more of a pause at the end of [name_f]Olympias[/name_f], whereas in [name_f]Olympias[/name_f] [name_f]Petra[/name_f], my brain tries to roll them both together into one long string of syllables. At any rate, I think the sound of this is lovely, but I find it a bit out-of-sync with your combos for the first two kids, and perhaps teetering on the precipice of sounding pretentious? Which I only mention because [name_f]Olympias[/name_f] is so powerful and strong, and I would hate to see her tip over that line into something that is aping power and strength rather than casually exuding them.
[name_f]Olympias[/name_f] [name_f]Apolline[/name_f] - Part of me finds this combo swoonworthy, and I think it’s the synesthesia / imagery part. I have never cared for [name_f]Apolline[/name_f], but something about the two names together makes me feel differently. [name_f]My[/name_f] brain mixes mythology and conflates sound with meaning to give me imagery of Idunn’s golden apples growing on the slopes of Mount [name_m]Olympus[/name_m], haha. I still find this one a bit out of place in the sibset, which I think is mainly due to the length of [name_f]Apolline[/name_f].
[name_f]Olympias[/name_f] [name_f]Antigone[/name_f] - This one might have the best flow so far, but I’m again hung up on how out of place [name_f]Antigone[/name_f] is next to the shorter middles of your other two.
[name_f]Olympias[/name_f] [name_f]Alma[/name_f] - I think the meaning is gorgeous, and this combo is one of the closest so far to stylistically blending with the rest of the sibset.
[name_f]Olympias[/name_f] [name_u]Jule[/name_u] - From a purely aesthetic perspective, I think this is the winner. [name_u]Jule[/name_u] has such a powerful sound as a standalone name that is in no way diminished by coming after [name_f]Olympias[/name_f]’ imposing four-syllable grandeur. I get a little thrill when I say them aloud together. The combo fits perfectly into the sibset with your other children, while allowing each name to shine individually as well. Then I came to interrogate the name [name_u]Jule[/name_u] itself - because, for me, it can never be just about the sound and feel, meaning is too important - and tracked back through your previous threads to find out what makes the name special to you. When I read about the connection to your family and what an important honor name this is for you, that just sealed the deal: [name_f]Olympias[/name_f] [name_u]Jule[/name_u] is utterly stunning, and definitely the one to beat.
[name_f]Olympias[/name_f] [name_f]Jade[/name_f] - I really want to love this one, and it does tick several boxes in terms of fitting into the established sibset. Yet, for some reason, [name_f]Jade[/name_f] feels a little pale or insubstantial next to [name_f]Olympias[/name_f], especially coming down off the high of [name_f]Olympias[/name_f] [name_u]Jule[/name_u] from just a moment ago. I tried to excavate the name’s personal significance to you from previous threads, and found myself again comparing [name_f]Jade[/name_f] to [name_u]Jule[/name_u] in terms of honor names. By that metric, [name_u]Jule[/name_u] emerges the clear winner. If I may quote you, “If I were to choose just ONE singular person to honor with the name of my daughter, it would be her.”
[name_f]Olympias[/name_f] [name_f]Liadan[/name_f] - I was thrown by this one at first, because after such a [name_m]Greco[/name_m]-[name_m]Roman[/name_m] heavy list, I wasn’t expecting one of the middles to be a Celtic name from one of my favorite series (Sevenwaters by [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] Marillier - if you’re a fiction-reader, I highly recommend this saga that masterfully interweaves historical narratives with druidic mythology and old-world versions of fairy tales.) I love [name_f]Liadan[/name_f] as a character, but even if you’re not referencing that specific context, it’s still a strong name with lovely associations. I think flow-wise, this combo can work, though I still think it’s a smidge long to blend seamlessly into the sibset.
[name_f]Olympias[/name_f] Menodora - Oof, this one is difficult! Had I not searched your previous threads, it would have been an easy no from me, just because Menodora has the length and grandeur of a first in her own right, so I feel like she and [name_f]Olympias[/name_f] almost vie for attention instead of being complementary of one another. But when I read your description (including the hippie rant!) of why you love this name and all the associations it has for you, it becomes very difficult to say “no” to! I think if this were a list of [name_f]Petra[/name_f] combos, I’d have [name_f]Petra[/name_f] Menodora near the top of my recommendations, but I think ultimately, my first impression stands - [name_f]Olympias[/name_f] and Menodora would make incredible siblings, but in a one-middle combo, they’re both trying to occupy the same space, so neither name gets to truly shine.
[name_f]Olympias[/name_f] [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] - Oooh, [name_f]Minerva[/name_f], I do so love this name! I do think that it’s pushing the length again, in terms of being a combo that gels with the sibling names. But I’m inclined to give a bit more leeway here than with other three-syllable middles options, like [name_f]Liadan[/name_f] and [name_f]Apolline[/name_f], simply because [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] is more of a familiar name, and in some ways feels more comparable to F3l1x, so it doesn’t seem as unrelated to your sibset.
Okay, I know this veered off from the brief, but I hope the analysis is still useful to you! In case it wasn’t abundantly clear, I feel like [name_f]Olympias[/name_f] [name_u]Jule[/name_u] is by far the standout in terms of meaning, significance, honor names, auditory and visual flow as a combo, complementing the other names in the sibset, and each name in the combo feeling strong and distinct, while still having a synergistic effect in that the whole feels even more powerful, meaningful, and impactful than the sum of its parts.
I know [name_f]Rosmerta[/name_f] has been off the table for a while, but [name_f]Rosmerta[/name_f] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] was always my favorite combo, so I thought I’d mention it one last time.
It’s lovely, it’s uncommon but still recognizable. Somehow feels rare and elusively cool, but also familiar, at the same time.
Complete honesty… [name_f]Perpetua[/name_f] sounds like someone took being a [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] fan a step too far. I also hear ‘petua’ which makes me think immediately of the word ‘impetuous’
