First off, my oldest brother teaches the younger grades at a school in downtown Cincinnati, so I’ve heard some pretty wacky names from his letters. But none of his students have a name quite like this one. In Walmart I came across a very cute little boy named…wait for it…Ciabatta. Yes, exactly like the Italian bread. (It’s pronounced chih-BOT-uh.)
What are the strangest names you’ve ever come across?
Tynlea and Draxx.
Violetraes (spelling not approximate), we all called her [name_f]Violet[/name_f] instead.
I went to school with a girl named Darrwynnea…but she always went by [name_u]Wynn[/name_u] or [name_f]Wynnie[/name_f]
[name_m]Tavis[/name_m] (boy)
Jaray (girl)
Fanci (girl)
Female (prn. fuh-mah-lee)
I don’t know if I would call these the “strangest” names ever but they certainly are interesting…
Chocolate
Alasia
[name_f]Summer[/name_f] [name_u]Day[/name_u]. Seriously.
It isn’t strange, but I don’t think I’ve ever hated any other name as much as I hate the one my friend is set on for her son: [name_u]Blaze[/name_u]. All I can think of is the internet expression 420blazeit.
Well, I once taught siblings named Reality and Jihad. Reality has a certain charm, but Jihad probably won’t be a great name to have at the top of a resume. I’ve also had a Jesuis (brother Jecroix, so I think it’s inspired by religion,) a Tazrian (lovely name and a brilliant girl) and a Tavar, and that’s just off the top of my head.
I haven’t met these people, but my both my parents are doctors and came across these two at the hospital:
Pajama (Paj-uh-may)
My dad called her name when she was the next patient up, and pronounced it Pajama, as in sleep clothes. She, a little six year old, marched up to him with her hands on her hips and announced “It’s PAJ-UH-MAY!”
Urine (Yur-een)
…yeah. Urine. She worked at the hospital.
I do, however, know an Yvenoushka and a C’Meijah, both girls. Yvenoushka, popularly known as Noush, has six siblings. I only remember two of their names: Kendrew and Yvetslana.
I came across a couple in my studies who were into Old English/Anglo-[name_m]Saxon[/name_m] names (they were Linguists who looked at Language change) and their children were:
Eadgyth (Eadgyð) the Old English form of [name_f]Edith[/name_f]
Aelfraed (Ælfræd) OE [name_m]Alfred[/name_m]
Ealdraed (Ealdræd) a name really not used after the Normans came, which they pronounce el-dred
kind of crazy, their middle names were OE names too, although not quite as out there:
Aebbe (Æbbe)
Cuthberht (OE [name_m]Cuthbert[/name_m])
Hereweald (OE [name_m]Harold[/name_m])
They told me if they had another daughter they would name her Mildþryð (Mildthryth) which is the OE form of [name_f]Mildred[/name_f]. As much as I love my linguistics, I would never do this to my kids. Poor things will be forever spelling their names, not to mention that they need a special font just to write them!
I’ve posted these in the Name Sightings before, but from my area (hometown and nearest city, which is 10 mins away);
Anjillina ([name_f]Angelina[/name_f])
Hanaja ([name_f]Hannah[/name_f])
Mykayla
[name_m]Prestyn[/name_m] (yes, on a girl)
Aliyalynn ([name_u]Lynn[/name_u] is her mother’s middle name, I went to school with the mum)
Lowla (her mum was another one I went to school with, she changed her name from [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] to Fall)
[name_u]Sky[/name_u]-[name_u]Blue[/name_u] (another high schooler, named herself at age 16 from [name_u]Skye[/name_u])
[name_u]Ocean[/name_u]-[name_u]Blu[/name_u] (saw this in the UK listing of baby names from last year)
[name_u]Blaze[/name_u]
[name_m]Christ[/name_m] [name_f]Jone[/name_f] (pronounced as [name_m]Christian[/name_m])
[name_m]Bryton[/name_m]
Bryden
Drummer (yes. legal given first name)
Virginette
[name_f]Hallie[/name_f]-Luya (I think it’s pronounced Hallelujah, but she always goes by [name_f]Hallie[/name_f], so I don’t know. (I’d go by [name_f]Hallie[/name_f] too, poor thing.))
Jaspyn… Recently saw this and had a “What the?!” moment.
Titan… A girl I went to Cosmetology school with named her son that. It took everything I had not to ask her if she was on drugs when she named him.
Taquandra “tuh-quan-druh”… Went to school with a girl who given this gem.
Slevin… Pronounced like the number Seven but with an L… I think it’s after the movie Lucky Number Slevin? It’s a friends nephew’s name… It’s kinda cool though.
Some of the names I’ve seen on here are pretty weird though too…
There is a boy named Fakhar (pronounced Fucker) at my school. I don’t live in a Country where englisch is the Main Language but we speak englisch well enough to know that word :'D
[name_f]Somer[/name_f] and [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_u]Frost[/name_u].
what happened there?
Oh, I forgot “[name_m]Jalan[/name_m]”, from a middle school my sister teaches at. A combination of “[name_u]James[/name_u]” and “[name_m]Alan[/name_m]”, I believe. ?!!
Quinceallahzayah
You’re kidding me, right? Quinceallahzayah? That’s unbelievable.
I came across a little girl named Chloella the other day :S
