The Winnie Predicament

[name_f]My[/name_f] partner and I both like [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] as a nickname, but we have a few issues.

Our last name starts with “[name_m]Fred[/name_m]”, so [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] is automatically out. (insert my tears here :sob:) I’m not crazy about [name_f]Edwina[/name_f], and it also has the [name_m]Ed[/name_m]/[name_m]Fred[/name_m] problem.

[name_f]Gwenyth[/name_f] is a family name, but we slightly prefer [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f]. Most other full names with the obvious [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] nickname tend to end with “-wen”, which I am afraid is too rhyme-y with [name_m]Fred[/name_m]----son ([name_u]Rowan[/name_u] [name_m]Fred[/name_m]----son, [name_f]Bronwen[/name_f] [name_m]Fred[/name_m]----son)

Are there any ideas that I am missing?

[name_u]Windsor[/name_u] and [name_f]Winslet[/name_f] are options I’ve seen before!

What about [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]?

[name_f]Elowen[/name_f] or [name_f]Winona[/name_f]?

I like [name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f]! Plus the nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] would make it “your own” instead of just a family name.

[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] (preference for [name_f]Willa[/name_f]-mina pronunciation)
[name_f]Winsome[/name_f]?
[name_u]Winn[/name_u]
[name_u]Winter[/name_u]

I’d say go with [name_f]Gwenyth[/name_f], “[name_f]Winnie[/name_f].” It is lovely with your surname sounds.

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.

There have been a lot of great suggestions already. The only one that I was going to say that I don’t see yet is [name_f]Morwenna[/name_f].

I like [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] (though I prefer the nn [name_f]Gwen[/name_f] for this) and maybe [name_f]Rowena[/name_f] or [name_f]Winry[/name_f]?

What about [name_u]Winslow[/name_u] or [name_f]Arianwen[/name_f]?

I like [name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f], [name_f]Winslet[/name_f], and [name_f]Elowen[/name_f]. But, honestly, I think you could just use [name_f]Winnie[/name_f].

[name_u]Winter[/name_u]
[name_f]Elowyn[/name_f]
[name_f]Winona[/name_f]
Wilhemina (same thoughts as @hyacinthbucket)

[name_u]Wynne[/name_u]? Or even [name_f]Willa[/name_f]

I know a little girl who is “just” [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]. I think that it can stand alone. If you want a full/longer name, I think I like [name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f] best. I also like [name_f]Gwenyth[/name_f] and [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] but see [name_f]Gwen[/name_f] as a more natural nickname for both. [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] is another pretty cool option!

I really like the suggestions of [name_u]Winter[/name_u] & [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] to get [name_f]Winnie[/name_f].
[name_u]Wynn[/name_u] could also be an option but its quite surnamey and unisex.

[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f]?
[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]?

I so appreciate everyone’s thoughts on this! It really helps to hear other ideas, and it actually prompted my partner to talk about names in general yesterday.

We both like the idea of [name_u]Winslow[/name_u], but find it a bit hard to say. I also agree that [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] would make [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] more of a natural nickname where [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] would lend itself to [name_f]Gwen[/name_f].

I definitely agree with the suggestions of Guinvere and [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f], I think both lend themselves well to nickname [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] even if they aren’t totally expected. [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] seems especially up your street looking as your other considerations.

I personally don’t think -wen ending names are too rhymey with your surname, but understand the reservation. [name_f]Mairwen[/name_f] is one that comes to mind as sounding quite nice with your surname! [name_f]Rhoswen[/name_f] isn’t too bad either.

This is a modern invented name/fantasy name, but I do think [name_f]Winry[/name_f] translates well into the real world and gets to [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] easily. (Perhaps too difficult to say though like [name_u]Winslow[/name_u]?) I prefer it to other modern picks like [name_u]Winter[/name_u] and [name_f]Winslet[/name_f].

Admittedly I’ve never been super fond of [name_u]Winslow[/name_u] as a femme name choice, mostly because I think of the painter [name_u]Winslow[/name_u] [name_m]Homer[/name_m] first and foremost, but it wouldn’t be a bad choice at all if you wound up deciding that the pronunciation isn’t too challenging.

And while not the most intuitive, I do think the pet name [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] could be used for a name like [name_u]Wren[/name_u].

I don’t think the “en” ending will necessarily rhyme with your last name unless they have the same number of syllables.

@stephaniebrooke mind sharing what you decided on?
