The Wonderfully Brave Girls

After going up and down my list a thousand times, we’re only keeping [name_f]Morgana[/name_f] as a first name. She’s definitely the front runner (I can’t imagine myself not having a daughter named [name_f]Morgana[/name_f]), but it feels like a very specific name, so I do need backups. Husband has nixed [name_f]Pandora[/name_f] (because she was man made) and Hespera (because “it doesn’t feel serious enough, and she was silly”).

My…Our new list is (Update here)
[name_u]Artemis[/name_u]
Aradia
Bellicent
Bradamante
[name_f]Calliope[/name_f]
[name_f]Circe[/name_f]
[name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f]
[name_f]Delilah[/name_f]
[name_f]Electra[/name_f]/[name_f]Elettra[/name_f]
[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]/[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f]
Hecate
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f]
[name_f]Isis[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f]
Nausicaa
[name_f]Nefertiti[/name_f]
Niniane
[name_f]Olympia[/name_f]
Silmarien
[name_f]Sybilla[/name_f]
[name_f]Vashti[/name_f]
[name_f]Zenobia[/name_f]
[name_f]Zorya[/name_f]

What do you think of these? Which one do you think we should choose? I’d ideally like a top five. I like it when the names feel different from each other.

If you have suggestions, they’re more than welcome. We want names of women who were brave, interesting, funny, clever and magical (or some of these). I don’t want names of treacherous women, women who couldn’t think for themselves, silly women. Mythology, history, literature, folklore… all good sources. I’m not a big fan of Bible names (I know I have two there, but they were exceptional women), or names from contemporary history (I just prefer the ancient ones). And no [name_f]Jane[/name_f], please.

Thanks!

I can’t get it down to a top 5. Here’s a top 9:

[name_f]Morgana[/name_f]
[name_u]Artemis[/name_u]
Bellicent
[name_f]Circe[/name_f]
[name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f]
[name_f]Electra[/name_f]
[name_f]Isis[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f]
[name_f]Zenobia[/name_f]

I’m glad you’re keeping [name_f]Morgana[/name_f] as I think she’s a good choice to match [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f]'s strength. I would avoid names that share the same “ee” ending ([name_f]Nefertiti[/name_f], [name_f]Circe[/name_f], [name_f]Calliope[/name_f] etc…). Here are my top five choices (other than [name_f]Morgana[/name_f]).

1 [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] (fave) - I love this name with [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f]. I like that the two names are mythological but from different cultures.
2 [name_f]Zenobia[/name_f] - rare and exotic

Honorable Mentions

[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f]
[name_f]Isis[/name_f]
[name_f]Olympia[/name_f]

[name_f]Love[/name_f]
[name_u]Artemis[/name_u]
[name_f]Calliope[/name_f]
[name_f]Circe[/name_f]
[name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f]
[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]
[name_f]Olympia[/name_f]
[name_f]Zenobia[/name_f]

Like
[name_f]Delilah[/name_f]
[name_f]Electra[/name_f]
Hecate
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f]
[name_f]Nefertiti[/name_f] (but I would ax it as a sister for [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f]; they’re very similar sounding to my ear)
[name_f]Vashti[/name_f]
[name_f]Zorya[/name_f]

Indifferent
Aradia
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f]
[name_f]Isis[/name_f]
Niniane
[name_f]Sybilla[/name_f]

Dislike
Bellicent
Bradamente
Nausicaa
Silmarien

I would go with a top five consisting of [name_f]Morgana[/name_f], [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] (I’m loving her as a sister to [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f]!), [name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f], [name_f]Zenobia[/name_f], and [name_f]Calliope[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Morgana[/name_f]
from your backup list my favorites in order would be
[name_f]Calliope[/name_f] I really love this one
[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]
[name_u]ARTEMIS[/name_u]
then [name_f]Isolde[/name_f], I love the name my son is [name_u]Tristan[/name_u]

I recently discovered [name_f]Isolda[/name_f] (with an ‘A’) in the family tree…it’s a lovely alternative.

  1. [name_u]Artemis[/name_u]
  2. [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]
  3. Hecate (but only pronounced the Greek way, heh-cuh-tee, I dislike the Shakespearean heh-cate)
  4. [name_f]Delilah[/name_f]
  5. [name_f]Vashti[/name_f]

[name_f]Minerva[/name_f]/[name_f]Athena[/name_f] occured to me, but you’re probably familiar with both names. There’s also [name_f]Atalanta[/name_f], the woman warrior. Antiope and Hippolyta were strong Amazon queens. There’s also [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f], [name_f]Antigone[/name_f], Omphale, [name_f]Dido[/name_f], Alcestis, [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] and [name_f]Medea[/name_f], who all have fascinating and empowered histories.

[name_f]Morgana[/name_f] [name_f]Isis[/name_f]

[name_f]Morgana[/name_f] is absolutely gorgeous! Out of the other names, my favourite five are:

[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]/[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f]
[name_f]Delilah[/name_f]
[name_f]Calliope[/name_f]
[name_f]Isis[/name_f]
[name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f]

[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]'s my favourite, but I think you’ll do well choosing any name on your list, as they’re all wonderful.

Good luck!

Ooo, I love [name_f]Morgana[/name_f].

The others I like are:
Aradia
[name_f]Circe[/name_f]
[name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f]
[name_f]Delilah[/name_f]
[name_f]Electra[/name_f]
[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f]
[name_f]Isis[/name_f]
[name_f]Sybilla[/name_f]

Here are the ones that I felt kind of went along with [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f].

Aradia
[name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f]
[name_f]Electra[/name_f]
[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f]
[name_f]Zenobia[/name_f]

[name_u]Artemis[/name_u], [name_f]Olympia[/name_f], and [name_f]Sybilla[/name_f] are honorable mentions.

Top 5 with [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] as a sister:
[name_f]Morgana[/name_f]
[name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f]
[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]/[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] (Can’t pick! I have so much love for the name [name_f]Ginevra[/name_f], but I feel like [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] might be better in the sibset. [name_m]Both[/name_m] are beauteous though!)
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] (my one caveat - how are you pronouncing this? I know that the pronunciation is disputed; I myself like ih-sohl-duh and ee-SOLD, but I worry about people pronouncing it is-old as I’m not such a fan of this. I do think it’s a beautiful name though, when pronounced right!)
[name_f]Olympia[/name_f]

Also like: [name_f]Delilah[/name_f], [name_f]Electra[/name_f]/[name_f]Elettra[/name_f], [name_f]Isis[/name_f], [name_f]Zenobia[/name_f]

Indifferent about: Niniane, [name_f]Sybilla[/name_f], Hecate, [name_f]Zorya[/name_f], Circe (I know you love this one, it’s just not a favorite for me)

Now, I [name_f]ADORE[/name_f] the name [name_f]Calliope[/name_f], but I’m somewhat concerned about the repetition of the ee sound at the end of her sister’s name. But this is also very close to the top 5 for me!

Veto points to:
Bellicent (all I can think of is [name_f]Millicent[/name_f], simply due to the relative similarity on paper, and I have bad memories of this name)
Bradamante (sounds masculine to me, though I know it’s traditionally feminine)
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f]
Nausicaa (reminds me of nausea and the two a’s looks unnatural to me)
[name_f]Nefertiti[/name_f]
Silmarien (just sounds awkward to me, though the LOTR reference is nice)
[name_f]Vashti[/name_f]

I like [name_f]Morgana[/name_f]. From your list, I like [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f], [name_f]Isolde[/name_f], [name_f]Zenobia[/name_f], [name_f]Isis[/name_f], and [name_f]Delilah[/name_f]. For mn, I like [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] and [name_f]Elettra[/name_f]. A name that came to mind was [name_f]Eirene[/name_f].

@bibliophile – In Greek, Hecate is pronounce heh-[name_u]KAY[/name_u]-tee

[name_f]Morgana[/name_f] and [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] are perfect.

But if I’m forced to find 4 others :stuck_out_tongue:
Ps – I thought you didn’t want another A name with [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f]?

[name_f]Calliope[/name_f] – [name_f]Adore[/name_f] her with [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f]. I already described her in the other thread.
[name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f] – Sounds great with [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f]. Since she’s so associated with [name_f]Cleo[/name_f], I can’t help but see deserts, a woman walking the [name_u]Nile[/name_u], singing to herself
[name_f]Isis[/name_f] – I suggested her as a first name in the other thread so you know I like it. She sounds strong when you say it. [name_f]Isis[/name_f] makes me think of fall for now good reason. She’s on a boat, sketching the [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] trees, barefoot.
[name_f]Sybilla[/name_f] – It doesn’t sound as good with [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f], but the feeling works. She’s the girl twirling around in the field with the stream to me. picking dandelions and making wishes to me.
[name_f]Zenobia[/name_f] – I think they go fairly well together. [name_f]Zenobia[/name_f] (Zenny) would be the little girl running from the seam foam and the tide and the woman in the sundress who paints the sea sunset.

As for the others, several of them sound good with [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f], I just dislike the images and feeling that each gives me. They strike bad cords in my head with [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f], or the feelings are just too different. I’d love to see several of them as middles. ([name_u]Artemis[/name_u], Bellicent, [name_f]Circe[/name_f], Hecate, [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] (this was a close one for first name spot), [name_f]Isolde[/name_f], Nausicaa, Niniane, Silmarien)

[name_f]Nefertiti[/name_f] and [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] are the ones I don’t think go with [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] at all. [name_f]Nefertiti[/name_f] just doesn’t have the right image in my head and they sound so similar to each other. [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f], even though it was on my list, doesn’t seem like the sort of strong independent woman that you’re asking for. She isn’t really brave, interesting, funny, clever or magical (unless you’re counting her there because she’s part of [name_m]King[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]) and besides that, she just doesn’t do good with [name_f]Morgana[/name_f].

You may like:

[name_f]Indira[/name_f] – as in Gandhi
[name_f]Kateri[/name_f] – [name_f]Kateri[/name_f] Tekakwitha rebelliously began studying Christianity at age 19; she canoed hundreds of miles at night from her Mohawk village to reach a [name_m]Christian[/name_m] one.

Amoretta
Gloriana
Tanaquill

[name_f]Leontine[/name_f]
[name_f]Odette[/name_f] – The Swan [name_f]Princess[/name_f]
Katla
[name_f]Cassandra[/name_f]
[name_f]Demetria[/name_f]
Boudica – a queen of the Brythonic Celtic Iceni people of [name_m]Norfolk[/name_m] in Eastern [name_m]Britain[/name_m] who led a major uprising of the tribes against the occupying forces of the [name_m]Roman[/name_m] Empire. – I miss Gwenllian :frowning:
Ishtar
[name_f]Inanna[/name_f]
[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]
[name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] – air-ee-ad-nee
[name_f]Phaedra[/name_f]

  1. [name_f]Isolde[/name_f]
  2. [name_f]Calliope[/name_f]
  3. [name_f]Sybilla[/name_f]
  4. [name_u]Artemis[/name_u]
  5. [name_f]Isis[/name_f]

My top five from your list:
[name_f]Morgana[/name_f]
[name_f]Calliope[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f]
[name_f]Olympia[/name_f]
[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]

But what i want is a top 8 so that i can add:
[name_f]Zenobia[/name_f]
[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f]
[name_f]Isis[/name_f]

A few suggestions, not that i think you need them:
Hippolyta
Penthesilea
Scheherazade
Ishtar
Herja

My to 5 :

[name_f]Morgana[/name_f](perfect much with [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] )
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f]
[name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f](I know the most amazing girl in the word with that name ! I love it ! )
Nausicaa(I know many girls with that name .They wear it very well }
[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]

My list favorite

[name_f]Nefertiti[/name_f] { cool name . but i think its too complicated and i have no idea how to pronounce it  )
Bradamente ( no idea who she was }
Silmarien

PS I love the pp suggestion of Scheherazade

Good luck

I have a top six. Best I could do; these are all so excellent.

[name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f] - Holds its own against [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] best. And is gorgeous.
[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]/[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] - I love both so much. I used to desperately wish my name was [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] when I was little, mostly due to a [name_m]Robert[/name_m] D. San Souci book I read over and over. But I adore the sound of [name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] even more, and if you’re going to be in [name_f]Italy[/name_f], you have an excellent reason to use it.
[name_f]Zenobia[/name_f] - Another one that’s a perfect contrast with [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f]. And it’s pretty with loads of nn options.
[name_f]Isis[/name_f] - Another goddess name–but such a fantastic one.
Niniane - This one is just here because I love the sound. And how it looks. And the vibe.
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] - Probably my favorite namesake of your list. She was just way too awesome, it’s such a great name to pass on to a child.

I also really adore [name_f]Olympia[/name_f], [name_u]Artemis[/name_u], and [name_f]Calliope[/name_f], but I don’t think they go quite as well with [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f].

[name_f]Augusta[/name_f]; I hear you, I tried to make mine a top ten… and was not successful. Good top nine though, [name_f]Electra[/name_f]'s been swimming in my mind since I read your girl name thread.

[name_u]Mischa[/name_u]; I think so too. These other names are, as said, only backups, I feel like she’ll be a [name_f]Morgana[/name_f]. Thanks for picking out the names!

Muffin; you’re so right, [name_f]Nefertiti[/name_f] and [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] sound way too similar! Good list, thanks for dividing them up!

Hoot; thanks! And may I say, I love [name_u]Tristan[/name_u]! Fabulous choice!

Rkrd; I like [name_f]Isolda[/name_f] too, but I love how elegant and snow like [name_f]Isolde[/name_f] looks without any a’s messing it up.

Bibliophile; yes, I do love [name_f]Athene[/name_f], but there are some things about her I don’t love. [name_f]Atalanta[/name_f] is on my middle list, [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] is lovely but not my style, [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f]'s been nixed, [name_f]Medea[/name_f]'s too cruel, Hippolyta’s too hippo-ish and [name_f]Antigone[/name_f]'s the name of one of my dearests friends daughter. Good suggestions though!

[name_f]Mary[/name_f]; Thank you! [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]'s more popular than I thought!

Esswei; goodie! Thanks for picking out the names!

thebandit; you don’t feel like they go with [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f]? Only kind of?

[name_f]Tigerlily[/name_f]; I pronounce [name_f]Isolde[/name_f] ee-ZOL-duh. Thanks for going through the names like that, very helpful!!! I kind of see what you mean about Bellicent… I usually prefer [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] to [name_f]Ginevra[/name_f], but as we’re moving to [name_f]Italy[/name_f], [name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] might go over better.

Rgp19; I like [name_f]Eirene[/name_f], might use it in the middle spot.

[name_u]Angel[/name_u]; yes, I thought maybe it was stupid to rule out on letter like that… [name_f]Love[/name_f] the five you picked out! Gorgeous words to go along with them too. They’re all in my top as well, along with [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] which I see you mentioned further down. [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f], I’ve always been on the fence with this one. I kind of feel like she was treated badly. I re-read one of my favourite books a little while ago, and it kind of has a little re-telling of her romance with [name_m]Lancelot[/name_m] and it’s so beautiful and tragic. It made me rethink the person, and I’ve always loved the name. From your suggestions I love Amoretta, but moving to [name_f]Italy[/name_f] and people will see a amaretto. [name_f]Demetria[/name_f], [name_f]Boudicca[/name_f], Ishtar, [name_f]Inanna[/name_f] and [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] I do love! [name_f]Boudicca[/name_f] used to be on the list, took it off and can’t remember why… [name_f]Odette[/name_f] is pretty too, but too sweet or something. Maybe as a middle though.

[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]; thanks!

[name_f]Freya[/name_f]; Thank you! I do like Scheherazade, unfortunately it’s too much for me. But her story is amazing, and I loved it so much as a child.

[name_f]Belle[/name_f]; Thanks for listing them! Bradamante was a very beautiful female knight in the Charlemagne romances, she hunted down and rescued her lover and some other people. She was seriously cool, and wild and amazing.

[name_f]Gwen[/name_f]; You posted while I posted! Thanks for making the top 6, and for the comments. [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f]'s just as gorgeous as [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f], but that doesn’t matter as a child. I wanted to be [name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f] and [name_f]Morgana[/name_f] and every name that was more romantic than [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]. So that was a long list ;).

So jealous that you can use [name_f]Morgana[/name_f]! Out of all of the men on this world I of course find a man who’s last name starts with an M and ends in “gan”. Out goes [name_u]Morgan[/name_u] for a boy and [name_f]Morgana[/name_f] for a girl.

#1 Name
[name_f]Morgana[/name_f]

Runner Up:
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f]: I love saying this name, it is a GP of mine. I wonder how you pronounce this though, I like ih-sohl-duh and ee-SOLD but I often say the first pronunciation.

Top 4 after that
[name_f]Zenobia[/name_f]
[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]/[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f]
[name_f]Olympia[/name_f]
[name_f]Sybilla[/name_f]
