Theo, anyone?

Let’s talk [name_u]Theo[/name_u]. My husband and I have had the hardest one coming up with a name if baby is a boy. We have always loved [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] but we decided the connection with the TV show is too much to overcome.

So we found [name_u]Theo[/name_u]. Not short for [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], just [name_u]Theo[/name_u]. Let’s hear your thoughts

[name_u]Theo[/name_u]'s cute, always makes me think of the Cosby Show (in a good way). I also love [name_u]Dexter[/name_u], nn [name_m]Dex[/name_m], and don’t think it is too connected to any TV show.

I really like [name_u]Theo[/name_u] but hate [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]. I don’t think I would ever use it but I do think it’s a great name.

I love [name_u]Theo[/name_u]! It’s in my top 5. I love [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] nn [name_u]Theo[/name_u], maybe slightly more–but I’d use just [name_u]Theo[/name_u] because I have an [name_u]Owen[/name_u], and I just feel it’s more balanced. I love the spunky, friendly feel of [name_u]Theo[/name_u]. I have a feeling my friends will think it’s “too Cosby,” as that’s their only association. I think [name_u]Theo[/name_u] on its own is more popular in the UK and much of Europe than in the US. Here it’s super fresh, imo. (I don’t know where you are, but these are my impressions).

[name_u]Theo[/name_u] is the 41st most popular name in the UK, while [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] is the 78th so very, very popular in the UK right now. If you combine the totals, it would make the top 30 boy’s names. For this reason I am now leaning more towards [name_f]Theodora[/name_f] ‘[name_m]Teddie[/name_m]’ for a girl…

I do like [name_u]Theo[/name_u], it is really handsome but just way too popular here.

I love it, but it’s way too popular here ([name_f]Canada[/name_f], west coast.) I knew 4 Theos in my mommy group last year. Two were short for [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], but then, all of the Theodores I know go by [name_u]Theo[/name_u] (I know 3 more over 2yrs.) So basically, love it! But I wouldn’t touch it with a ten-foot pole because popularity does matter to me.

I would go with [name_u]Dexter[/name_u], the association to the TV show will definitely wane over time. [name_m]Dex[/name_m] is super cute for a little boy and [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] is a great name for a man.

I love [name_u]Theo[/name_u]! It was one of my top choices before we found out we’re having a girl. If I have a little boy in the future, I would love to name him [name_u]Theo[/name_u]. My husband prefers [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] but I think [name_u]Theo[/name_u] is perfect on its own!

I love [name_u]Theo[/name_u] too! Nicknames as names on birth certificates are becoming very popular ([name_m]Archie[/name_m], [name_u]Alfie[/name_u], [name_m]Luke[/name_m], [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]) so you could absolutely just go with [name_u]Theo[/name_u].

Since you like [name_u]Dexter[/name_u], how about [name_m]Declan[/name_m] or [name_m]Dax[/name_m]?

I love [name_u]Theo[/name_u], and it’s on the short list of names not vetoed by my husband! Personally, I’d prefer to go with [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] nn [name_u]Theo[/name_u], but my husband so much prefers [name_u]Theo[/name_u] as a stand-alone that that’s probably what we’d go with.
In the USA in 2013, [name_u]Theo[/name_u] ranked 666, and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] ranked 170.

Adorable, but as a nickname only. I don’t really care for it as a given name though.

[name_u]Theo[/name_u] is a nice name! But not one I would personally use. but I say if you love it, use it.

I love [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] and [name_u]Theo[/name_u] (especially as a route to the nn [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]), but they’re far too popular for me to seriously consider as a fn.

I’ve pretty much only heard of that show once, don’t even know anything about it. I don’t think it’s too much to not name a child [name_u]Dexter[/name_u]. I like [name_u]Theo[/name_u], why not [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you want more suggestions for a formal name for [name_u]Theo[/name_u]? I think it’s fine as a standalone.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] it! It’s pretty popular here in Germany, definitely more than any longer form and whenever I hear it on a little boy it’s a bit too “boring” for me however when I imagine it on my own hypothetical son, I adore it. (I actually don’t find it boring when I hear it on older boys)

I also much prefer just [name_u]Theo[/name_u] to [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] as I find it non-nicknamey and timeless enough to work on a boy/man of any age, cool enough to work for a boy in highschool and sophisticated enough to work on a lawyer or judge while still being fun.

I think [name_u]Theo[/name_u] is nice but agree with other people’s comments that it’s getting extremely popular. That doesn’t have to matter if you like it though. My friend just named her boy [name_u]Theo[/name_u] yesterday actually. I do prefer [name_m]Leo[/name_m] to [name_u]Theo[/name_u].

I actually prefer [name_u]Theo[/name_u] to [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]. It’s classic, but the shortened form has more spunk, imo. Great name.

I’m with you. I love [name_u]Theo[/name_u], but hate [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]. I had it on my list before I remembered it is pronounced the same as the Greek word for uncle, which makes it unusable for me. But I love it on other kids! You should go for it.

I’m a huge fan of [name_u]Theo[/name_u]. It sounds friendly, adventurous, bookish, and has a nice meaning.

I’m currently in love with the name [name_u]Theo[/name_u] but afraid it may see a surge of popularity here in the US soon.

[name_u]Dexter[/name_u] is sick, like you mentioned the ill tv show.
I really love [name_u]Theo[/name_u], very adorable. [name_m]Just[/name_m] [name_u]Theo[/name_u], like you said, and not [name_m]Theodore[/name_m].
