These classic names, What do you think about them?

With my current binge show being ‘[name_f]Anne[/name_f] with an E’ on netflix, I have been falling for some of the ever so cute classic vintage names that the show has. I personally have noticed some love for vintage names in the last two years, and have seen a lot of names coming back, especially since I work in the child field. It was weird for me to go from the strange modern names with alternative spellings, to vintage classic names that have deep roots in the history. I know myself I have started to fall for some vintage names, like [name_f]Adira[/name_f], [name_f]Augusta[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], and [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] for an example. I have seen more and more pop up on signatures around Nameberry, and even on the charts. I love seeing them, and think more of them should be getting a comeback. What are your thoughts on some of the vintage names?

also some of the names that I have liked on [name_f]Anne[/name_f] of green gables are:
[name_f]Marilla[/name_f]- I really like this one, a lot. I have been looking for something to nod to my best friend [name_f]Mary[/name_f], without using the name, obviously. I really think I found it here with [name_f]Marilla[/name_f].

[name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]- I have had this one in my name list before, and I really do love it.

[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]- [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] is so cute and vintage! I love the cute vibes that it gives, with a tad of spunky as well.

[name_f]Diana[/name_f]- I wouldn’t use this name any thing other than a middle name, but I love the vintage name and the history of this name. Especially [name_f]Princess[/name_f] [name_f]Diana[/name_f].

[name_f]Muriel[/name_f]- [name_f]Muriel[/name_f] doesn’t really do it for me, but the vintage feel of [name_f]Muriel[/name_f] surely does hit that vintage feel everyone is loving.

[name_u]Josie[/name_u]- I have [name_f]Jocelyn[/name_f] in my longer list, and I love the nn [name_u]Josie[/name_u]. I honestly would use it as a first name, if I didnt love [name_f]Jocelyn[/name_f].

[name_f]Jane[/name_f]- [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is a very popular vintage middle name, that I have seen around Nameberry in signatures. I love the vintage feel it has, also love how short it is as well.

[name_m]Moody[/name_m]- [name_m]Moody[/name_m] was one of the names that surprised me in this show, honestly. I think it’s very brave for the time frame of the show/book. It doesn’t quiet go with the others. I surprisingly like it too.

[name_f]Marilla[/name_f]- this could totally work with [name_f]Maria[/name_f], [name_f]Mila[/name_f], [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], etc being as well known as they are. Not really my style but still a nice name. It’d be refreshing to hear.
[name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]- I could see a [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] having a lot of trouble. Honestly can’t picture any of the -[name_u]Bert[/name_u] names doing well nowadays: [name_m]Albert[/name_m], [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m], etc., they all seem too nerdy.
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]- already popular and definitely works. I think it’s pretty but I can’t use it for personal reasons.
[name_f]Diana[/name_f]- I find this to be a bit dated but know the sweetest girl with the name. [name_f]Princess[/name_f] [name_f]Diana[/name_f] is a good namesake. I like this as a middle name.
[name_f]Muriel[/name_f]- makes me think of the old, grumpy maid from The Suite Life of [name_m]Zack[/name_m] and [name_u]Cody[/name_u] whose signature line was “I’m not cleaning THAT up…”. That association ruins it for me.
[name_u]Josie[/name_u]- I’ve known several girls with this name. I think it’s lovely
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]- okay. I know everyone on here loves this name but, unpopular opinion, I don’t. I remember being in third grade and meeting a girl named [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and just feeling so bad for her because her name was boring. I don’t feel that strongly anymore, but it’s still not a favorite of mine. Might be refreshing to hear though.
[name_m]Moody[/name_m]- this definitely won’t work.

[name_f]Adira[/name_f] is a beautiful name. I don’t think I’ve seen it before!

[name_f]Marilla[/name_f]- I like this. It doesn’t strike me as particularly classic though. Maybe more old fashioned/[name_m]Wild[/name_m] [name_u]West[/name_u] sounding. It sounds really pretty, and I think it could work well today.

[name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]- I’m not a fan of -bert names. [name_m]Just[/name_m] not an appealing sound, imo.

[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]- This is to be my younger cousin’s middle name, who is due in [name_u]July[/name_u]. She’s named for her father’s great grandmother. I think it sounds cute, and it’s coming back into style.

[name_f]Diana[/name_f]- [name_u]Love[/name_u] this one! I think it sounds strong, and the mythological association is cool too.

[name_f]Muriel[/name_f]- Not fond of this one personally. The sound of it is unappealing to me. I like the similar [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] better.

[name_u]Josie[/name_u]- I like this, but only as a nickname. [name_f]Jocelyn[/name_f] nn [name_u]Josie[/name_u] is the best of both worlds.

[name_f]Jane[/name_f]- Meh. It’s grown on me here recently, but I still don’t love it. It’s a nice enough name though.

[name_m]Moody[/name_m]- Sorry, but no. Unfortunately, this name doesn’t have the same charm today that it might have had in the past. I’d hate to have this name and have to field off all the ‘moody’ jokes.

[name_f]Marilla[/name_f]- I don’t have much of an opinion on this one, considering I’ve never really ever thought about this name, ever. It looks cute.

[name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]- A bit biased because it’s my favourite boy name, but I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m], especially with the nn [name_m]Gil[/name_m].

[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]- Not really appealing to me.

[name_f]Diana[/name_f]- I love [name_f]Diana[/name_f] a lot, but only with the pronunciation [name_f]Dee[/name_f]-[name_f]ANN[/name_f]-uh.

[name_f]Muriel[/name_f]- I’m not a fan of [name_f]Muriel[/name_f]. I’m still biased because my biggest association was the cleaning lady on The Suite Life Of [name_m]Zack[/name_m] and [name_u]Cody[/name_u].

[name_u]Josie[/name_u]- I like [name_u]Josie[/name_u], but it’s one of those names that “are just not for me”

[name_f]Jane[/name_f]- I adore [name_f]Jane[/name_f]! It has a beautiful sound to it. Most [name_u]Jay[/name_u]- names do.

[name_m]Moody[/name_m]- Not a fan in today’s context. I feel it unfortunately should be left on the shelf. It’s sort of cute though.

“[name_f]Anne[/name_f] with an E” is such a great show! I hope that they make more seasons.

Marillla- I really like this. It’s totally usable.

[name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]- It’s OK. Maybe as middle name.

[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]- I adore this name. Sadly it is getting more popular.

[name_f]Diana[/name_f]- I do like this. I wouldn’t use it, but I would love to meet a little girl named [name_f]Diana[/name_f].

[name_f]Muriel[/name_f]- See [name_f]Diana[/name_f].

[name_u]Josie[/name_u]- I like it, but as a nickname to [name_f]Josephine[/name_f].

[name_f]Jane[/name_f]- i [name_f]ADORE[/name_f] this name! So fresh and sweet but spunky too.

[name_m]Moody[/name_m]- Totally GP

namelover11 - I totally feel the same way about [name_m]Moody[/name_m], it’s totally a guilty pleasure for me. I also agree to more seasons to [name_f]Anne[/name_f] with an E.
sansavesper- I came across the name [name_f]Adira[/name_f] in a book! It was instantly love!

Also, group question, I was a big [name_m]Zac[/name_m] and [name_u]Cody[/name_u] fan, and I really don’t remember this [name_f]Muriel[/name_f] person?!

She was the elderly redheaded cleaning lady who always said “I’m not cleaning that up” whenever someone broke or split. (:

Im seriously going to have to find an old episode on youtube because I totally can’t remember her…

I love [name_f]Augusta[/name_f], it’s such a warm yet sharp name to me, if that makes sense. It reminds me of a British lady having a picnic (I’m pretty sure that imagery is rooted in some [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Austen[/name_u] movie, “[name_f]Emma[/name_f]” I think - the character wasn’t great but that didn’t stick.)
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] and [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] are also lovely, they’re not my favourite vintage names but I appreciate them.
[name_f]Adira[/name_f] is beautiful, I’d put it a similar catefory as [name_f]Rosina[/name_f], both names that have seen some usage back in the day but never came back; they have this non-frumpy antique charm.

[name_f]Marilla[/name_f] feels more modern (due to similar sounding names) but also slightly older (as in the person wearing it) than [name_f]Adira[/name_f] or [name_f]Rosina[/name_f], though it also doesn’t seem to be used much nowadys (haven’t checked the charts, just from what I’ve seen and heard). I think it’s a sweet name, not one I’d use but I like it and [name_f]Mary[/name_f] would be a wonderful nickname.

[name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] isn’t a name I’d choose though I have come to like it because of the character.

[name_u]Ruby[/name_u] is adorable! It has been on my long long list for years; I don’t consider it very vintage anymore though it certainly is timeless and definitely classic!

[name_f]Diana[/name_f] isn’t a name I like much, I find it rather dated.

[name_f]Muriel[/name_f] isn’t for me. Surprisingly, I like it much better in [name_m]German[/name_m] (which is rarely the case with such antique names) but I find the “Myoo” sound to be very unpleasant and clunky.

[name_u]Josie[/name_u], I don’t love very much and while I wouldn’t use [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] due to personal reasons, I much prefer it to just [name_u]Josie[/name_u].

[name_f]Jane[/name_f] - love love love

[name_m]Moody[/name_m] - haha, it’s a fun name for sure (and weird names were all the rage back then - wasn’t his middle name [name_m]Spurgeon[/name_m]?) but poor child.

I forgot to add that his middle name was weird too, [name_m]Spurgeon[/name_m]. ( Which was just used as a FN to one of the 19 duggar kids like 2 years ago now).

I can see that imagery as well. I would imagine them being [name_f]Augusta[/name_f], [name_f]Emma[/name_f] and [name_f]Georgia[/name_f], for some reason.

I’d probably see [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] (I do love [name_f]Augusta[/name_f] and [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] together, another name I adore in that set is [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f]; somehow they all have different imageries when I think about only one of them, however, together they feel the same).

[name_f]Marilla[/name_f]- I’ve always loved just [name_f]Rilla[/name_f]… [name_f]Anne[/name_f]'s youngest daughter in the books who’s actually [name_f]Bertha[/name_f] [name_f]Marilla[/name_f] nn [name_f]Rilla[/name_f]. Never really been a fan of the full name [name_f]Marilla[/name_f], but between the nn. [name_f]Mary[/name_f] & [name_f]Rilla[/name_f], I think it could work!

[name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]- [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]! I’m not sure if I’ll ever be brave enough to use it, but it stays on my list either as a first or middle! I know of a boy probably around 9 years old now named [name_m]Gilby[/name_m], which I think would be a cute nn if people really hate the bert part.

[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]- [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]! I don’t personally know any, but she seems to be moving up the list in popularity.

[name_f]Diana[/name_f]- I’ve always seen [name_f]Diana[/name_f] as the perfect friend… always encouraging [name_f]Anne[/name_f] & pretty content to stay in the background while [name_f]Anne[/name_f] lives in the spot light more. I like the name & know a [name_f]Diana[/name_f] who’s around 8 or 10 years old. It works great on her!

[name_f]Muriel[/name_f]- Not my style.

[name_u]Josie[/name_u]- I know a [name_f]Jocelyn[/name_f] nn. [name_u]Josie[/name_u]. She’s super cute & really made me love [name_u]Josie[/name_u] more!

[name_f]Jane[/name_f]- Never been a favorite of mine. I like it in the middle, but prefer [name_u]June[/name_u].

[name_m]Moody[/name_m]- [name_m]Moody[/name_m] [name_m]Spurgeon[/name_m] works perfectly in the books & movies, but I don’t think [name_m]Moody[/name_m] would work these days. (I’ve not watched the new series, but had a bit of a crush on the redhead from the movie!)

Like other posters, I haven’t been able to embrace any of the -bert names yet either, but I do love the nickname [name_m]Gil[/name_m]!

I’ve also really warmed up to [name_f]Diana[/name_f] and [name_f]Diane[/name_f] in the last couple of years. They feel pretty timeless to me now.

[name_f]Marilla[/name_f]- I wish I liked it. I really would LIKE to like it, if you know what I mean.

[name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]- I like [name_m]Gil[/name_m], but would use it for [name_m]Gilad[/name_m] or [name_m]Gilead[/name_m] or something.

[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]- [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] is intensely popular here in Australia, but it’s a nice name. But, like, Top Ten popular is too popular for me.

[name_f]Diana[/name_f]- I don’t care for it.

[name_f]Muriel[/name_f]- Not really usable here.

[name_u]Josie[/name_u]- my own nickname. I only like it as a nickname to some longer [name_u]Jo[/name_u]- name. Doesn’t have to be [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] though, Josselin/[name_f]Joceline[/name_f], [name_f]Josette[/name_f], anything.

[name_f]Jane[/name_f]- Not at all popular, but very well known. Utterly classic. I find it a little black dress name that goes with everything.
[name_m]Moody[/name_m]- a distressing sort of name.

there were other names from later in the series I liked but I don’t want to spoil for people watching the show

[name_f]Adira[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], and [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] are all beautiful names.

[name_f]Marilla[/name_f]- This is a really pretty name that I’ve never heard of before. I think the ties to your best friend is lovely.

[name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]- This is cute but definitely not something I would use. The kind of name that isn’t my style but I wouldn’t turn my nose up at someone else using.

[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]- I love this name. I think it’s a beautiful classic name but still sounds really cool and stylish.

[name_f]Diana[/name_f]- Another name that I personally wouldn’t use but still nice. Seems a little too plain for me.

[name_f]Muriel[/name_f]- I am not a fan of this name at all. It sounds vintage but not in a stylish way.

[name_u]Josie[/name_u]- This is an adorable name. It’s just sounds cute and quirky without being too out there. I personally love the name [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] so I would use that and have this be a nickname possibility.

[name_f]Jane[/name_f]- This name never appealed to me until recently. I definitely would prefer it as a middle name.

[name_m]Moody[/name_m]- As cute as this sounds I think it’s more of a nickname. I like certain unique names but this may be a little much. I would use it as a nickname though!
