I am expecting a baby girl in early 2018. I have created a list of names I love, but I feel many of these names would feel to out of place in the modern age or are just too “old” and grandmotherish" to use. Thoughts? Suggestions?
Personally, I like [name_f]Elise[/name_f], [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] and [name_f]Silvia[/name_f], I think they are all really pretty and different! I’m afraid I don’t really like the others, but that’s just me! Choose whatever you want!
I think it’s all relative honestly. For me, some of these are “old lady names” while others aren’t. If I break it down:
[name_f]Dolores[/name_f], [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], and [name_f]Silvia[/name_f] are the old ladies.
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f] and [name_f]Melinda[/name_f] could be their daughters.
[name_f]Elise[/name_f] is probably 20-30.
[name_f]Arabelle[/name_f] is somewhere been newborn and 5.
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is timeless, and fits in any of those groups.
I personally really like [name_f]Dolores[/name_f], and with the Westworld heroine [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] I could really see this name rising again.
I also think [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] and [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] don’t read “old”.
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] I think is timeless and classic, I would love to meet a little [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]!
I don’t think they are too old lady. I love love love [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] and it is actually popular in some countries. Unfortunately my boyfriend is not a fan so I will not get to use it. [name_f]Silvia[/name_f] and [name_f]Arabelle[/name_f] are popular on here so you don’t need to worry about those.
The name I think is the hardest sell is [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] because of [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] but I’m a book nerd so it may not be an issue in the real world!
[name_f]Elise[/name_f] definitely sounds modern to me. The only [name_f]Elise[/name_f] I know is a young child, and it’s similar to other on-trend names like [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] and [name_f]Ella[/name_f]. [name_f]Arabelle[/name_f] has never been popular enough for me to associate it with a particular generation. [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] feels timeless and ageless, I know Margarets of all ages. [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] and [name_f]Silvia[/name_f] (and [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]) fit in well with the vintage name trend. [name_f]Dolores[/name_f], [name_f]Melinda[/name_f] and [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] do sound a bit grandmotherish to me still though.
I think all of these are fine to use, and the only one that feels kind of dated, to me, is [name_f]Melinda[/name_f]. [name_f]Elaine[/name_f], [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], and [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] are certainly older, but I think they could sound fresh on a little one.
[name_m]Just[/name_m] wondering though, if you were due in early 2018, you wouldn’t have conceived yet, what’s up with that?
The only one I would use is [name_f]Elise[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Arabelle[/name_f] would be acceptable too though, but the rest do seem very outdated.
That being said, this is my opinion. Please don’t let it sway you from naming your baby something you love! In a world of crazy names, your baby will certainly not be disadvantaged just because she has an ‘old name.’
To answer your question though, [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], [name_f]Melinda[/name_f], and [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] are the only ones that strike me as old lady.
[name_m]Even[/name_m] if the first day of your last period was today, you’d be due Dec. 19, 2017. I’m just saying.
You can get feedback without making something up, I think most people would prefer helping someone who’s just genuinely asking about names over someone fabricating their life story.
